Let's be honest. Going to the gym is costly. I live in the country and the town I live in doesn't have a gym the nearest one is like 40 miles away. So I was thinking about ways that I could save on exercising. I know I can buy every kind of video and walk up and down my road and thats great. but I don't really like working out alone. So I was wondering how many of you would love to have a group that got together a couple of times and week and walked together for so many miles. I am asking because I am considering attempting to start something like this in my home town. Nothing special just a group that walked together around the town. We have a track but thats boring..why not walk around and have something besides the football bleachers to look at.. So what would yall think if someone did a group like this where you lived?

I think that´s a great idea. Some people may like a companion or two for company and chat, others for motivation and others for security.

Hi SissyRose, Actually we do have something around here where a group just walk together in a group. They call themselves Brisk Walkers or Fun Walkers or something like that. When they go out in a group, they would put on similar T-shirts to identify themselves. They have walks every Sunday, I believe. I have never joined them because we prefer to sleep longer on a Sunday morning. It's free and I think it's great idea. But I realise some things from this discussion. Some people need company when they exercise, some can do it on their own. I don't need company when I exercise. I could go jog by myself. But normally I would bring my daughter too, as she loves to cycle while I jog. We motivate each other, I guess. It's also a great way for us to bond. For you, I think you can definitely set up some thing like this, rally your neighbours and friends to join in. Your group will definitely get bigger over time. Arrange from different routes each time, as long as it is not to the malls. It's going to be fun!

I think its a great idea and would join one in my local area. Its challenging to stay motivated by myself, so I don't walk often now. Walking with another person you can learn so much from them and vice versa. Good luck

there is a store called the runners den here where i live and they do that. i think it is great because others can encourage you when you are feeling a bit tired and you can encourage others too.

Gym here is quite expensive. Now I bought a exercise machine and do exercise in my home. The machine costs me $300, but it can use for a long time. Now not only me, but also my family members can do exercise just in my home. So cheap thing sometimes are great.

I have lost six and a half stone in the past fourteen months and I haven't been anywhere near a gym. Not only this, but I've also never joined any kind of group to help me lose weight, or paid a single penny for anything extra. Instead of using a gym, I have just simply started running in my local area and walking around the roads when I have a little bit of spare time. This is a much better idea than joining a gym, and is of course much cheaper, so there is no need to say that you can't lose weight just because you might not have very much money.

I would love to have a group like that to walk with! I live in town and hate to walk alone so I just don't. If I had someone to walk with, it would really help, not just so I wouldn't have to walk alone, but the fact that we could encourage each other.

I suggest cycling if you have a bike, walking in scenic local footpaths and skipping with a rope. Yes, starting up a group is a wonderful idea and then you could meet like minded people that live near you. I used to live in a village and did lots of country walks plus cycling. I bought a dog and he had long walks. I moved to where I live now and have a car. I drive to the sports center which has a gym, swimming pool, spa and an energetic dance class.

I think that a group like that is good idea. Someone in my area arranged a meeting for people were interested in walking together, and today they meet every week. The members of the group go for a walk, they get exercise and fresh air and they also enjoy the conversations that they have while they walk. When I heard about the group I got interested in joining, because I think that walking is a good way to get some exercise, and it easier to find the motivation when you don't walk alone. Unfortunately I work every weekend and the people from the group meet in the weekends, so I am not able to join them. Maybe I should start my own group, there might be other people who are unable to meet in weekends and maybe we could find another day.

SissyRose: This is a point in which localites will evince keen interest. going to gyms is costly and is suitable for people working in software or youngsters earning more every month. for retired people like us -- it is better to adopt walking as a regular exercise. while staying in USA myself and my wife use to go out for walking within the colony where we were staying. It was a big colony --one round itself use to be large round. When you start walking others who come on the way, you can make friendship and talk and slowly you will find your group will have ten or more people assembling at the fixed time of a day for walking/talking/exchanging etc. I have seen many such groups in Chennai where retired people form groups and take walking exercise.

Occasionally I challenge myself with a long-distance walk. I once walked 17000m in about 2 hours 40 minutes, and in the next morning I was glad to find that I was not fatigued.
