Do you dare to stop a theaf from doing stealing?

China

In winter about 10 years ago,I went downtown to buy a suit for myself. But when I entered a clothes' shop,a young man came inside, too.By his behaving I knew he's a theaf,so I felt a little angry because I hate theaves. The young man pretended choosing clothes while peeping into my pockets! While I was trying on a new suit, the practised shopkeeper put my jacket on her clothes shelf and succeeded stopping the theaf from stealing! But a 27-year-old Brazilian was not so lucky.A piece of net news said at about 19:30 of the day before yesterday in the city of Dongguan,a Brazilian young man prevented a theaf from stealing a young woman's handbag, but then the other two theaves came up,the three bad guyes attacked the foreign man!To his surprise no one gave a hand to the brave Brazilian though there were many viewers! Have you encountered a similar thing?Do you dare to do such a thing?

no i don't except i have kung fu. i had had my cellphone stolen several months ago. i regret that when i feel the action i just keep getting on the bus and didn't turn round. if i turned round i would beat up him. however, think it over, if he has the accomplices, i'll in danger. it's not worthy.

But if you harm him,you have to pay him for that,so it's better to keep an eye on your purse and not to face any thieves.

Yes,when a thief is stealing, mostly there are his accomplices to help him.So once you find your money or something being stolen, the better way is to get it back or to call the police if you are safe enough. But you cannot beat up him and harm him because the law never allow us to do that here.

I haven't been in that situation yet. However, if i were in there that time, i may not do anything, you may call me as an coward, but in here, i may get a terrible revenge from that thief or their group. I am a woman who never do fight yet, i scare to be fight.

No one likes to come close to a thief if your money or things are not in danger, and no one likes fignting with them, either. But when you find what you own is in a thief's hand, mostly you'll jump up to fight for it without thinking of yourself, and then you'll see you are so strong, hehe.

No, i can't do it. I used to see a thief got my cellphone in my bag when i am driving a motorbike but i could not talk much or shout to him, just say: hey, what are you doing ...and saw his running...Actually i wished i could run to catch him to get my cellphone back, but i couldn't leave my motorbike in the middle of a street because it was rush hour.

If you mean would I be a theif, no I could never do that. I would hope that I would come to the aid of someone who was good enough to try to subdue a person trying to steal from someone else. I don't think of myself as a real brave person but I would hope I would come to this persons aid.

Very simple indeed.

I never mean that.I just want to know if you dare to stop a thief's stealing when you see this kind of behaving.Yes,we must come to our aid if they need, but it's not very simple sometimes.

Wow.. that is horrible, the foreigner helped but then no one helped him.. In our country once a criminal is seen, the people would really help, and even beat the guy up..they are quite helpful.. I think I cannot stop a thief though, unless it's inside a mall, i can just tell the guard.

Yes,in China many people are not poor on the property, but they are extremely poor on offerring help nowadays. You are smart enough. When you encounter a theft, you have to judge how dangerous it is,and then decide what to do and don't get yourself in danger.

There are thieves all over the world. What brought shame on us isn't the thieves but the bystanders'behaviour in which they watched the fun with no one going to the rescue.I don't know how the Brazilian thought of us at that point.Perhaps the thieves are natives of Dongguan, the bystanders didn't give the Brazilian a hand for fear that the thieves should revenge them.I admire the Brazilian for the moral courage he possesses.

We must encourage healthy tendency in our society and let more and more people do what is righteous without hesitation.

I agree. In my town there are a thief gang, and in their hometown they did stealing very often some years ago,of course they were ever caught by the local police, but now they are outside.Yes,the Brazilian is admired, but the bystanders did so wrong at that moment. But bystanders not giving help before an dangerous affair has happened not only one time!Who's to blame?...

I have never had a chance to stop a thief from stealing in my house or anywhere else. But,after reading your post,I thought over it and I think I have the courage to stop a thief if he ever enters our house.I may get injured in my attempt as he may be armed.Yet,I believe,I may do it and perhaps I can overpower him and hand over him to the police.

I can understand. When what we own is about to be stolen,we have right and must have the courage to get it back. But in that kind of situation,we mostly forget ourselves, that's very dangerous. So it's the best to take good care of our belongs.

I agree with you.Being cautious is really essential, otherwise our attempt may backfire. We may get injured and we may be killed either. You are right.Overconfidence is harmful.

I guess that without thinking I have reacted in the past when there's been an attempted theft, but as I think back, it is a pretty dangerous thing to do, becaue you can never know if the thief has a knife or not. I have alway been lucky and I never come across any incidents now that I have moved away from the city. _Derek

You are right. In the city of Liuzhou I met a boy begger with a knife "thrusting" into his arm,who was hanging after me murmuring "Give me some change!".I knew he's blackmailing a stranger and wanted to kick him off!But I thought of his accomplices arround and then gave him one or two yuan to finish his entangling!

Hi, Oldsix, this is really a sad story. I hope that this Brazilian wasn't hurt too bad. It's a shame that the other people didn't help him. He was alone against three men! I was almost robbed a few month ago when I was walking in the street with my daughter. My handbag was hanging on my shoulder and thanks God my daughter noticed that a young girl behind me was trying to open the bag. She was in a group of Gypsy girls. Stealing in the streets or in the public transport is a good business of many of them. We just yelled at them and it was a happy end for us. We didn't finish like the poor Brazilian :))

The Brazilian is not harmed very much, but he feels extremely disappointed and said that he would never get into trouble before the things of this kind later. To tell the truth, nowadays in China the bystanders are not helpful as before. Yes,in front of a thief,we can try our best to stop him from stealing, but don't forget to take good care of ourselves because our property is not all for us.Good luck!

It would be a very risky take for me if I stopped a thief from stealing. I would rather call a police or anyone in authority to handle the matter. But if I have other companion and we know that we can prevent the thieves and overpower them, I will. I was sad to know the reactions of the people who witnessed the stealing. They didn't save the foreign man from the thieves, I'm sure when all of them join together the thieves would be caught. Maybe their fear overshadowed them.

I can say it's a smart way to gain more helpers to deal with such a thing if you think you have to offer help. And I can tell you that here in China most of the witnesses will not give a hand in case they may be got into trouble because they often hear of the similar matters or even scams!Have a nice day!

My father once slapped a little boy because he was stealing from other by cutting their bags or pockets with razor blades. My aunt had a similar experience bur they didn't get to steal anything because she saw the in time. A guy stole a phone from one of my friends from a pocket. Actually a thief tried to steal something from me in a store but the pocket he unzipped was empty. I was expecting something like that in that certain store.

Wow,your dad was so upright, brave and lucky! Here I heard that someone's money has been stolen by cutting the pocket with a razor blade, too. As long as we are cautious enough,it's not easy for a thief to steal our money or something else.Have a nice day!

Perhaps, the most that I could do is to get help. It's not easy for a woman like me, who doesn't know any self defense to jump in to a scene like that. If there's a nearby police officer or police station, I would hurriedly go get help, but not do it myself. If it'd be too late, then at least I could help by giving information to the police officers about the criminals so they could get caught faster.

Well, that's a good idea. But in fact since the thieves dare attack a theft stopper,it means the local police station is likely uncapable, they cannot offer you any help in time, then maybe you'll be in danger!I don't hope so if you face such a thing.Have a nice day!

Dear I have never had a thief in my life but a lot of people have.Well that's an hard question to answer but i think that I would call 911 if I saw someone was in trouble with a theif. Its really sad that people are so desprate that they steal .To be honest I probably wouldn't get into the whole mess when I see a theif stealing something from someone else .I would probably be scared and wouldn't stop the theif but call 911 for help.If another theif steals something from you I would call the police right away.

I think it's clever of you to deal with this kind of things.Yes,if you don't know well what's happening, you'd better not get into any accidents,or maybe you'll get yourself in trouble because what you are watching is probably a scam. That's why the brave Brazilian didn't get any help from the viewers arround!

I wish I could say yes but in reality there is about 50% chance I would actually do it.If I think about it logically it wouldn't be a very good idea seeing as how I'm female and 16 years old and it would be a much better if I get help and there is a police station nearby our home so the best course of action would be to just call the police. But if I see a thief I might try to stop him/her myself in the heat of the moment but there is a high chance such actions will result badly for me.
• China

You are a brave girl! But sometimes being brave will do no good to you if you are not strong and lucky enough. As you can understand, since the thieves dare attack the theft stopper, the local police station must be so uncapable that those thieves often nose there stealing!

I haven't experienced something like that, as I always keep an eye on my bag and thankfully noone have ever tried to steal from me. I guess I don't have the physical strength to take down a thief, I can only scream very loud! I wouldn't try to chase a thief, unless he would try to steal my house. In that case I don't know what I could possibly do, but I would definitely try to stop him.

It's so good to have a good habit to keep an eye on our own things while we are outside, and I always do so to avoid being stolen.Yes,if you are not capable enough to take down a thief, you can ask the police for help.

That's a nice idea . We can do this by provhding what the thing he want . By giving this we can stop him and prevent him to thief . What you say ?

Yes,we had better find a clever way to avoid our money or things to be stolen when we have to face a thief, and it's the best not to fight with them on spot in case we'll be attacked by the thief gang if there's no help for us around there.
