I think reading improves sleep

I like to read all sorts of reading materials both electronic form and printed or written form in order to increase my knowledge and learn things. However, I noticed that reading has another advantage for readers in that it helps readers to sleep. Yes, I do this most of the time in the night when I have trouble with sleeping. I would just have to open a book and read it. After a few minutes I would be asleep without knowing it. Do you agree or share the same opinion or experience? Do you have problem with sleeping at night?

Hello squallming I enjoy the reading before the sleep as well, whether in the night or in the day. Last night, we had the frightful loud BOOM noise and we woke expecting the prowler!! We were terrified! But it ended all was well. Was nothing. But now we are the wide awake and it is just after 3 in the morning. My partner went to the sleep, but I couldn't yet so I decided to read so to be sleepy. Guess what? I read until the sun rise! Finally, I fall to sleep around 6 or so. But is good to read to get the sleepy.

It happens to me too when I wake up in the middle of the night I would have a bit of trouble going back to sleep again. I would just stay awake and surf the internet or play games till morning. Of course, if I open a book or something to read while relaxing on my bed, I would still fall asleep easily.

Sometimes the reading is good to put me to sleep, but other times not so much. I guess it's just according to how tired I am.

I feel sleepy when I read books in bed time.... until someone got the book from my hands when I fall asleep.... But experts say that reading while lying in bed can damage our eyes... Is it true?

Yes, reading while lying on bed can damage our eyes. However, every time when I read while lying on bed, I would sleep in minutes which I believe would not harm my eyes that much.

Reading in my opinion does improve sleep as well. I love to read just about every night. It makes me sleepy to the point i have to stop reading. It puts my mind at ease from thinking about all of the days worries and makes it easier to rest.

Based on my experience, yes reading helps me to fall asleep. I have problems sleeping as well especially when I'm not too tired. So I also enjoy reading.

I'm totally not agree :). It have contrary effect to me. I have time for reading only at night, and when I start good book it happen to not sleep all night. Of course I hate day after that, especial if I'm not finished book. :) From other side. For problem with sleeping "Technique for emotional freedom helps". Will find books for her in Amazon.

We have the same habit. I too read a book horizontally before dozing off to sleep. Most of the time I'd reread a novel of which story I'm already familiar with so that I wouldn't be too engaged to finish the book and thus deprive me of sleep. The sight of words and paragraphs and thoughts lingering in your mind before you close you eyes is just relaxing. It helps me fall asleep so easily even if I've drink coffee hours before bedtime.

I think that reading before bed can sometimes help a person go to sleep because when you are reading you have to think and concentrate and that will wear you out after a while.

Reading in bed... - ...is a vital pleasure for me.
I read every night before going to sleep; it is one of my greatest pleasures, and the thought of being without an interesting book to read before turning off my light last thing at night is quite depressing for me: I try my best to ensure I always have a new book "on the go". I look forward to my reading at night like you wouldn't believe; and would feel miserable just getting into bed without a book to read. I never feel that tired anyway; and reading - I feel - relaxes me. I'm not the best sleeper, and often wake up tired, but it may be that that final read puts me into a better state to sleep, prepares me for it. I'd be lost without my late night reading; and my existence would be much much duller.

I enjoy reading for the same reasons and I too find that I get a much better nights sleep when I read before bedtime. There have been occassions when I get into the story and can't put it down, I do fall asleep but its like even though I'm sleeping I'm thinking about the story, what happens next, how will it end, and so on. Have you ever read a book that was so eerie that even though you know its not true it still gnaws at your thoughts keeping you awake with a twinge of fear? I've had this happen and the wierd thing is, I hate when that happens but at the same time a small piece of me enjoys it. When a book can stir that type of emotion, to me, that is one heck of a good book.

Yeah it's true (for me), whenever i can't go to sleep or times that i'd live to review for an exam, i always read a book and it always put me to sleep in no time.

I don't deny that reading a book while we are lying on bed helps to fall asleep, but I don't agree that this effect is that of reading. Simply because when you are in such a position, your energy starts getting lower and lower and the fact of holding a book just increases the speed of this procedure. To be sure, you can try an other mental activity while you want to sleep, I personnaly do it with TV: I turn it on and keep watching it untill I find myself already sleeping without I realise it.So, my point of view is that not only reading has such effect but it is the same with all mental activities.

I love to read books and I agree that reading improves my sleeping problem. When I want to sleep because I am tired but my eyes dont want to close yet and my mind is still awake, reading books is the best solution for me especially those inspirational books it helps me to relax and sleepy. But there some books that keeps me awake especially pocket books which I can't sleep not until I finished the entire books, that's the reason why I only read those books during weekends or day time.
