I went to convenient shop buying some snacks along with a few yogurts and canned drinks. As i queue along to pay for it, a guy next to me try to start a chat by saying " buying yogurt, eh?". Is there no other way of starting a chat other than stating the fact that i buy yogurt?

As the other members has said, it probably his way to start a conversation with you. I sometime got people asked me something to start a conversation while waiting for something (like waiting the bus, waiting in cashier queue, etc). Maybe he thought if he started the conversation with simple "hi hello" you would forget him easily, so he chose another word to make you remember this meeting or at least the conversation doesnt fade away from your memory easily...see he did it well, you even posted it as discussion on mylot, if it was hi hello would you post it here? Its remind me when I was shopping alone, and suddenly I got someone asked me "excuse me miss, may i know your secret to have slim figure" hahaha, it is a real experience and I still memorize it until now.

Haha. you are right. if that is his real purpose, he really does a good job. i hope it won't be the next pick-up line of the year. "Buying yogurt, eh?". Are you sure that person who ask you about your secret is not a salesperson? Just asking.

Hahahaha no he was not a sales person, he is just a medical student from my ex university. Perhaps he was bored or he was doing some research, but yeah he is cute.

You should have said no I am buying a pleasure boat in Hawaii LOL Only joking. I guess the guy was just trying to make polite conversation, may not have been an ulterior motive. Some people are just plain friendly, although he could have been a bit more imaginative, rather than buying yogurt, states the obvious. Did you respond to him or ignore him? Most will take the hint if you just shrug, nod or pretend not to hear them. I usually have my ipod on, so people can see I am listening to music and won't say anything to me. I prefer to get my shopping without interuptions.

Haha~~ If I said that, I wonder what will happen later. Well, I didn't want to be rude, so I say "yup". Now that i think about it, i think he really just trying to chat to waste some time. The queue is pretty long that night.

Sounds like he just wanted to talk to you Guys are really silly sometimes. They will do anything and be totally awkward when starting a conversation with someone. Over the weekend we were at a gaming convention. My daughter (she is 2 lol) loves one of the commentators. DH stood around while he was doing interviews, but ended up having to hand her off to me before the commentator was done. He had already seen my daughter & had sent one of the staff members over to find out if we were waiting for him. Anyways, when he is done instead of just taking a picture with her and talking to her, he goes out of his way to introduce himself and ask if I play the game, ect, ect. But this was for my 2 year old, yeah right!

LOL, thats a funny way to start a converstaion. Maybe he really likes yogurt and could not think of anything else to say to strike up the converstation. But I think that it would have been better if he wouldnt have said anything at all. ~C~

Funny, and intriguing, right? I don't know if he likes yogurt or not, but he don't buy yogurt at that time. i agree with you. if he did not start that, i will not queuing to pay and return home thinking why he did it.

perhaps you should have bought tomatoes or so.. ask yourself how you would start a conversation with a stranger you think you like or just someone because you like to make a chat or like to be friendly and say a bit more as: good day

If I buy tomato, I bet he will say " Buying tomato, eh?". I will definitely post about tomato here, not yogurt. Hehe. Lucky him. I don't even know his name, but here I am gossiping about him.

No doubt that this is a funny way to start a conversation but the positive thing is that may be he was dying to talk with you and instantly this thing came to his mind seeing the yogurt on your hand! Do not get angry...!This is good that people are trying to start conversation with you by any means!

Haha, I don't think he is really interested in me particularly. I think he is just bored, and dying to talk. I'm an easy target, because i stand behind him. I'm not angry, just curious.

I think the guy want to chat with you, when he saw you buy the yogurt, he thought you must like it and can start the chat in that way. Maybe you do not buy the yogurt on purpose and you are not curious with it, so the beginning is not attractive.

Yeah, i also hope he just pick up yogurt as a topic to chat, and not teasing me. Yeah, i does not come to the shop to buy the yogurt exactly. i just have general idea of buying snacks and the yogurt grab my attention at the shop while browsing. Maybe you are right.

He would have thought that if he said "Hi" you wouldn't respond or would think that he is trying to flirt or something. Maybe he wanted you to know that you two being at the same shop are buying something from the same shop weird no?

He want me to know we both in the same shop buying something? That is indeed a bit weird. Haha. I really hope he is just a nice guy trying to chitchat. The queue is pretty long.

I used to go to this one health food store where the cashiers were always too friendly and talkative all the time. There are times when I feel talkative but everytime is making me think that the manager tells them to be this way. But once I bought like all breakfast food from there cause that was what I wanted. The cashier goes "These are all breakfast food." I'm like, "Well yea, I know. I wanted them." I mean what was I supposed to say, I thought they were for dinner too? LOL, Oh well, I don't go there that much but it was a good place to get health food, Trader Joe's it's called.

Ive had people try to make small chat, and even have stupid things while trying to flirt. Maybe, this guy was trying to start a conversation and flirt with you. If you didnt send hima signal he probably felt dumb, and dropped it.
