Recession?

It sure seems odd to me that when we were raising our children I bought the groceries, paid the medical bills, paid the medical insurance premiums, transportation bill and still had enough money for "frills". The kids are gone now and I can barely afford almost anything. I've budgeted $18 a day after taxes, savings and cell phone!!!! That's it! I don't get it. Do you see your dollars getting stretched more than in the past?

Hi, I am sorry to hear that you are having to live on a strict budget. Recession truly has a worldwide effect which we feel constantly in our lives. The prices of vegetables and other groceries continues to soar here alongside that of petrol, diesel, not to mention the taxes the government imposes. I am still under the care of my parents and so I do not yet have to spend money for my living. I will be looking for a job next year and will also be getting married. I need to be financially independent. The job scenario is pretty bad here and even with a degree of a Postgraduate in English I doubt what kind of salary I will get. Some are getting a mere 10$ as a salary when they work as teachers. Though I would be able to get help from my parents, this cannot continue forever as we know and therefore I will have to fend for myself. Right now whatever money I am making online from different sources is going to my bank account. I really hope to save enough money there so that I would have the satisfaction of having earned something on my own. But still, my parents are paying the internet bill monthly. I hope I can be financially stable some day.

That is amazing! I admire her thinking and abilities. I wonder if I can do something like that! I don't have any relatives abroad and never actually thought of going somewhere, earning money and coming back!

Rumor has it that Canada is not suffering from a recession at all?! Yet they are active in world trade so the world economy has to have affected it. We are all dependent on import/export. Even Iowa and Minnesota ship in sweet corn from California! Our own agriculture can't keep up with our appetites!

I just thought of something you might think about. I worked with a girl who came to the United States, worked just long enough to save money to purchase a new built house with her husband near her parents and fly back.

Yes, Yes, Yes! I found a old note book that I did my budget in years ago in and I looked at my bills, food expense ect and compared them to my current budget and it actually made me cry. I was making $3 less an hour than I am now, and I was able to set aside almost $100 a month in savings, yet my shopping lists haven't changed much, my power usage is about the same (the rates went up A LOT), and my phone bill is actually almost half of what it was. What's really eating up that savings and is really hurting me is food and gas for the car. Those prices have pretty much tripled. It is sad, and I can tell you one thing for sure, if the current trend of inflation and price hikes continue I will have to make $10 an hour AFTER taxes just to continue to live, sorta comfortably, if nothing major comes up, like car repair.

After finding out through all the responses here I'm convinced we are turning into a third world country! Our parents worked so hard so we could have a better life than they did and look what our generation has done to it.

I agree, and it is sad. About 10 years ago (just as I graduated high school) I said something has to change or our life is going to get really rough, my friends laughed at me, and now a really close friend is living on my couch because of really harsh lay offs at her job. She is one of the ones that laughed too. In high school Economics we learned about inflation and what would happen if spending from both big business and government didn't slow down or at least bring it in house- and we are now living that lesson that so many of my class mates slept through. Truly though I had better stop there or I will start going off, and this isn't the discussion lol.

I'm stretching them more and more all the time and I consider myself a professional frugalista! The license plate renewal came yesterday and it was three times what it was three years ago, for the same car. I'm glad I don't have a new car! Some food prices are unreal. Turkey hotdogs for $2.68 at Walmart? Only a couple of months ago, if that long, they were a dollar a package. My savings were depleted due to a health crisis last year so I feel as if I'm treading water. I know that I'm not alone.

Health can be a big problem when it comes to finances, that's for sure. I had cancer last year and the insurance paid for 80% of the surgery and radiation treatment, but that still left me holding the bag for quite a bit. Then there was time off work (I work for myself, so there are no "sick days"). It also costs money to hire someone to do things I can't do any more. I have determined to eat more organic and quality food, which is quite the challenge now, but it's for my health and that's important. There seems to be no way to win.

What was really eye opening for me was a health problem I had a few years ago. I had to stop working. The doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. I applied for short term disability through my employer. They kept on rejecting me. Finally when the doctors found out what was wrong with me I questioned the Insurance Company's stand that they would insure me only from the time I was diagnosed although I became ill before the diagnosis. They said, and I quote "not enough documentation"!

The reality is that the taxes and prices have increased a lot, while the salaries have gone down or stayed the same. This is the cruel reality and is the result of a mindless government, at least in my country. While the taxes have increased many times in the last years, the salaries were severely cut . I am finishing the university next year and I have to face the fact that, after a six years study, as a vet I will be paid with a lower salary than a unqualified worker. In my country the intellectuals are now worse paid than those people without any school.

Young or not, this is a sorry state we're in. My savings is the only thing that gives me peace of mind. It seems the older you get, the more you worry.

Day by day the rates of the essential things are increasing and we are in need to buy the essential items with a high cost. It is really hard to avoid some important items and we are in need to buy them even though they are expensive. We all are working hard to earn more income to compensate the loss, but still we are facing financial recession in our life and our income is not enough for our expenses. Some of us having the habit of preparing the budget and following it, but since we are facing some unexpected spending like emergency, hospital charges, festival expenses and others, due to this unexpected spending we are in need to spend more money from our budget. Previously the things are not very expensive like now, we have the ability to control our spending within budget and save some money for the future, but now the costs of the things are very high and it is really hard to follow the budget, because day by day the rates are high and every day the rate of the product is increasing gradually. Our day to day spending is really unpredictable and it is really hard to determine about our spending, we can try our maximum to reduce our spending by avoiding the unwanted things, it will help us to avoid getting debts from others.

This is what I was saying. So I believe "we" need to make saving money everywhere a hobby if nothing else!
