Drinking water during mealtime

There are different theories about water consumption during meals. Some people advocate having a glass of water just before eating your food because this will help easy digestion. I have seen others keep a jug of water by their side and keep drinking every now and then. They start hiccupping after just two spoonfuls of food and need water. There are others who drink water after completing their lunch or dinner. I usually drink water before beginning to eat and then have another glass of water after finishing my food. What is the best possible practice and what do you all do?

Drinking water during meals can hamper your stomach digestive power and also fluctuates your insulin levels. the water dilutes the digestive juice and interfere with the digestion. too much liquid in your food can slow down your digestion. drink water 15 minutes before the meal or 15-30 minutes after the meal. Stay healthy. :)

Too much liquid in our food would slow down digestion is what you have written. Are you referring to too many liquids like soup etc or is it semi solid food also?

you just drink a bowl of soup, which contain little water and more of vegetables and/or protein (chicken, egg, etc). just a little amount of water won't make much difference.

Usually, I just drink enough before eating and then drink lots of water after eating. Still, I will prepare a full glass of water during meals, just in case soemthing caught my throat...

If Ayurveda is to be believed, water should not be taken from at-least half an hour before meals till half an half an hour after meals. The reason is that any water taken during this time will dilute digestive enzymes and so weaken the digestive process. Also, water taken just before the meals occupy space in the stomach and people eat less than what is needed, depriving body of nutrition. This also will increase the craving for snacks in between meals, which is known to be one of the main causes of body fat and obesity.

They advocate a glass of water before meals if people want to watch their weight. But what is the point if we are going to reduce regular food and crave snacks later/ that will only defeat the purpose. Thanks for the informative response.

I never drink water before or during meals but almost an hour later. Drinking water during meals or even before will dilute our digestive juices and in fact will hamper digestion.

THere are so many methods followed here; ultimately I guess one needs to adopt a practice that suits oneself as suggested by Vandana.

I usually practice drinking of tap water before mealtimes. This will help condition your digestive system and allow lubrication of the digestion path. I usually avoid drinking during meals. Although I admit of violating this one. They say that drinking water while during meals may not dissolve oils and fats and instead bring them together making them harder to be digested. As you can see, they are non polar matter which is insoluble to polar water. hence, they will tend to move on together in clusters when water is added up with them during digestion. That is why water, especially cold ones, they say are not good during meals. Plus, the effect of water draining the food will naturally give a person the tendency to swallow the food with water rather than take time to chew it up and break them down into small pieces for easier digestion.

I drink water whenever I feel the need to.I drink before, during and after mealtime. It does not affect me in any way. There are some people who say that water will increase the pH of the hydrochloric acid in the stomach, but I don't find it difficult to digest food. I would suggest you drink water whenever you are thirsty, regardless if it's before, during or after a meal.

My roomie had bypass surgery and isn't supposed to drink while she eats. I, on the other hand, if I don't have a drink with my meal, I can't swallow the food. I've been known to down over a half liter sometimes even a whole one, during a meal. There are a few things I don't need fluid for, but most things I need to drink with.

I have a very dry mouth and so I drink water all day long, especially when I try to eat something. The down side is that what goes in has to come out, so I am never very far from the bathroom..

It's good to drink water before your eat, its true that it helps you digest the food easily and it also makes you a little bit full so that you will eat little. The one who hiccup when eating is when they dont chew their food well thats why the the air cant pass by their throat so the effect is hiccup.

I really don't know that there is a best practice when it comes to having water to drink while you are eating. For me, I have to have something to drink when I am eating as this was the way that I was taught from the time that I was a young girl. However, in the time that I've learned more about cultures other than my own, I've heard that there are a lot of people that don't have something to drink while they are eating.

In our culture we do not drink anything while we have our lunch or dinner. We make diluted sweet dishes and this is normally served a the last course on special days.Apart from water we do not have anything to drink while eating and here too teh practice varies.

kalav I support the view that one should not drink water during eating food -- it will affect food consumption. I support the view prevalent in Kerala -- drink hot water after taking food so that the food gets digested easily. I follow this nowadays and it is helping me. good day,.

And here I was thinking that our stomach and the acid it contains were totally effective in the digestive process. If drinking hot water is a necessary aid to digestion does that also mean we should only eat hot food...nothing cold??? I think I read somewhere that drinking cold water with a meal causes cancer in the colon!

you're right drinking warm water after eating has more health benefits than drinking a cold one. I remember reading somewhere that it also helps not only in removing fats but prevents it too from being deposited in our colon.

Hello guys, I also drink water after having my meal . I don't know much about its theoretical value. But I think it is good for the digestion. I have heard that you can't eat more if you drink water before the meal. I don't know much about it .

It is said that your food intake will reduce if you have water just before a meal.we ourselves can feel it.But I just have one glass of water before my meal; this does not impact me very much.As Ravisivan has pointed out it is good to have hot water after food.THanks Vidyaprakash for dropping in; and all the others too.

The best possible practice is to drink water while your eating, after you eat, when you're thirsty or better yet, whenever you feel like it. People have done it since the first day of existence, we should be alright :)

Hi, My yoga teacher gave me these tips about drinking water related to different meals: at least 15 minutes after light breakfast, half an hour after heavy breakfast and one and a half hours or at least 1 hour after lunch or dinner. He told me that because he follows this practice which he gained knowledge about from his guru in turn, he does not have any indigestion problems. I have tried very hard to abide by his instructions and when I have managed to follow it for some days at a stretch, I have indeed felt the difference. It has helped me get relief from gas and indigestion problems. I sometimes do tend to drink water when I am eating but still I am trying my best to act as he said as I did feel the difference on listening to him. He is a very knowledgeable elderly person.

Every individual has different health issues. Some needs water while eating to digest food easily while others are advised to drink before or after meal time. So I guess that depends on our health/ body system. That is why medical team always advise everyone to have a health check first before starting diet or change diet.

We have different practice depending our different culture. But for me I drink a lot of water after dinner to cleanse my body especially I'm drunk the other day. It is a good advised also to drink a cup of water before eating your meal to easily full your stomach and you will just eat few or a little amount of food.
