I hate the dentist, but....

August 31, 2012 2:22am CST
I really hate the dentist. I had braces when I was younger and was at the dentist all the time. Once they were off and I was basically old enough to decide if I went to the dentist or not - I stopped going. Now the other day I looked closely at my teeth in the mirror and and got a rude wake up call. I am 35 so my teeth have to last me for quite some time yet and they are not looking fantastic. I need to go to the dentist - but I am gripped with fear. Is it going to be that bad or am I over exaggerating how bad it will be in my mind.

I also hate to see a dentist because whenever I have a dental problem,I felt they just made another problem in my condition.Like the dentist that examined my teeth with false teeth. The connecting clip is making the teeth to irritate and becomes black,so she makes some cleaning to apply some enamel to it so that it could be strong again, yet to my surprise the enamel was gone and I am not sure to go back to the dentist because she did not make it durable enough to last longer.

You are definitely correct there friend.I think they must first ask you if you like another session because there are other areas to be repaired. They did not suggest any thing but instead just I have complained, yet it seems that I needed some more sessions with her due to the other teeth was already aching from her cleaning it.I did not go back to her but go to another dentist because asking fee is too expensive while the other dentist ask a smaller fee and her service is more friendlier.

It is a little bit like when you go to a mechanic and they find not only the problem that you initially complain about but they always seem to find about 20 other things that are wrong and the price and pain goes up and up.

As for me I enjoy going to the dentist. Some months ago I was afraid too then when I saw the results I was super glad! Nowedays I feel really good when the dentist makes my teeth whiter, healthier and more beautiful. I think it's worth to it. My dentist is a real professional. We are good friends now and I'm not afraid at all. Don't be afraid! Teeth are very important. After finishing you'll see that the pain takes some seconds but the beautiful teeth will be for a long time! Make your mouth fresh and healthy! Everything will be great!!!!

You had me on board until you mentioned that the pain is worth it!! I don't want the pain - and I know the results last a lot longer than the pain, but....the pain still hurts. I know that I am a grown man and should just step up and stop being a little pansy, but I can't help my fear of the dentist. I will share my experience once I have been because I am aware that I MUST go, I just dont want to!!

Well, I am a person who is afraid of injection in fact I just got my ear piercing at the age of 21 at the clinic because of fear. I just visited to the dentist 3 times for 26 years of existing in this world because fear over powers me, my husband wanted me to visit to the dentist so my teeth will be checked up but I keep on giving excuses. Last night he told me okay if you will not go to the dentist then at least see a doctor for a body check up because I always feel dizzy and I told him later. But, that later means never... I don't really want to go to the hospital nor see a doctor I don't have the courage to do it :(

Of course fear keeps us from doing many things in life that we should do, and even things that we would ultimately enjoy. I am pleased to announce that despite my fear I have actually booked in to see the dentist some time in the next 2 weeks. I just hope that my fear is much worse than reality!!

Im not afraid of the dentist becouse when I go to the dentist I do never have to rapair any tooth at all. I am just in for a check on my teeth :) The dentist always tell me that I brush my teeth very well, and people like me make their jobs easier ;P. Anyways, don't you take care of your teeth? I know this depends on where you live of course, but if you remember to brush your teeth in the first place, there would be no pain when you go to the dentist. I will recommend to go to your dentist now and get your teeth fixed. And from that time you should always take care of them, that way you will never have to feel the same thing you did with the dentist again ;) Take care!

Yes I do take care of my teeth and I brush every day. But I do not floss and last time I went the dentist showed me what was below the gum line and it was not pretty!! It took quite some time to clear away all the build up and it was quite painful. That is what I am afraid of this time.

Oh, I am so sorry for you and I understand your feeling of fearing for the pain when the dentist tried to pull your bad tooth out of your mouth. I show my sympathy here. But if you have problem with your teeth you will have to go the the dentist.Pls just don't think about the pain too much so you will be relaxed the painful moment will be over very soon. Pls trust yourself. But for myself, I have never been to the dentist at all since my teeth is very healthy till now.

You have never been to the dentist at all! that is amazing. Then again I guess in some countries a lot of people dont go to the dentist at all. I will try to block out the idea of the pain because I know in the long run it will be worth while.

Even if you hate the dentist, you should still go. It's what's best for yourself. It's another way of taking care of yourself. Otherwise it will be too late if you discover that your teeth are deteriorating it's because of your own fault.

It is often the things that are good for us that are the things that we are most afraid of doing. It is often the things that are bad for us that we are most drawn to! I know what you mean about it being too late if I put it off.

When I was at school I got badly bullied because of my teeth, my front two teeth especially stuck out, my parents took me to the orthodontist who got them straightened out, so I am always overly conscious about my teeth even after they were straightened. I hate going to the dentist, for me it's that damn drill, you think with all the modern technology, they'd make improvements. The injections I don't mind, it's the drill that frightens me off. I confess the last time I went and got my teeth checked was 2008! Until I desperately need to go, I won't step foot in there, and it's the price they charge too! An arm and a leg, or should I say a molar and an incisor!

I can't say how bad it's going to be but a dentist will. Take care of your teeth. I wish I had taken better care of mine. I'm in my sixties and I could live a few more years and I would give all my hair for a good set of teeth. Don't neglect your teeth. All the best!

My Uncle was a dentist so we were in and out of the office for check ups all the time. There is nothing to fear really. It may be the sounds that bother you the most. Today they have gas that will take the fear away and make you feel happy. Never used it myself. I had braces when I was young too so I know what that was also like. But I never stopped going to the dentist when they came off. Not going for years and years is not a good thing. Plaque builds and builds. It causes bad breath for starters not to say of the bacteria that stays behind in your mouth that brushing doesn't remove alone. Your trip may not be that bad but it also may. Not making the trip to the dentist was your doing so what ever happens is because you didn't choose to use proper dental care and precaution all that time. Forget the fear...you only have one set of teeth and you don't want to lose them. Getting the necessary work done is worth it in the long run...setting fear aside.

When I was younger, I was so anxious to have a dental check up. It was always an effort to paid visit the doctor. I can relate here, I'm into braces when I was younger and seldom visit the dentist now. Speaking of dentist, I'm planning to have my checkup tomorrow or on Monday. Thanks for reminding.
