at dawn this day.. i was awake not able to sleep because of the heavy rain, usually when we have weather like this.. it is not as bad as this one... since we are not always hit by the typhoon unlike in the northern part of the country.. except now, we are experiencing heavier rains than the usual, it made me think i should be keeping a survival kit. i was awake at 3am when the lights went off too.. good thing i always keep candles in stock and some matches too as the rechargeable lights, all four of them ran out of energy too! i guess out of gut feeling too i went and check my kid's medicines if i have those in stock as well..and yes i do not have the ones for asthma anymore.. so when hubby woke up i told him i will be buying stuff for the kit..like medicines, some betadine, band aids, can goods, more candles and an extra rechargeable light. we never know when calamity would strike again and from the look of the sky today, it is still going bad... anyone here have a survival kit at home? what are the things inside it? i might learn something too as i will be going to buy some later.

I view candles as being sort of risky. For one thing, I have three cats. Even more dangerous, though, is that there will be a gas leak due to damage from whatever disaster has struck. It really isn't good to go about lighting matches if there is any risk of that. Otherwise, one disaster leads to another bigger one. I have flashlights and candelas, which I would turn to in lieu of candles. I have tested the rechargeable candelas out during a power outage, and they worked quite well. Extra blankets, a weather radio and non-perishable food are good things to have on hand. You should also have a supply of bottled water, since natural disasters can often lead to the water supply being undrinkable for at least several days.

There are both flashlights and radios that can be powered by hand cranking, so the use would be unlimited. I have oil lamps, but just as candles can be dangerous so can oil lamps and tiki torches.

i guess it is risky as it might cause fire and risky if there will be gas leaks.. but gas leak here is quite uncommon i guess as we do not rely on it that much.. but still you are right, but i will have those still because i might not be able to recharge flash lights or led flashlights if there will be no electricity..as if there will be flood they really do cut all electricity.

Good thing that you have thinking to keep survival kit at home. Well I we don't have one at home but based on what I watched in the news and what I know, those things that you have mentioned are part of it. It is better to be prepare than to be sorry when the calamity strikes again. So keep it up and be safe.

Lucky you. I've been praying for rain all morning. in this part of the country we have no water if there is no rain. my dad is a board member of the water district and according to him supply is really low. pls tell the rain to leave your area and come visit us next. oh, regarding the survival kit. buy an airtight box like lock & lock. it might be a bit expensive but if you are forced to evacuate and wade through a flood you would be thankful that you bought it. all your supplies will be spoiled if they get wet.

It is really necessary to have these important stuff in cases of emergency. I pretty much have the same. And of course, there should be water included with it.

WE have no survival kit at home, jazel. Though, we have some over the counter medicines and candles always. We also always have batteries for our radio, just in case there is no electricity. And we alwasy have some canned goods, for times that we are too lazy to cook. It's also rainy here today. The sky is cast , so when i woke up today, i felt like absenting myself again.

This kind of weather, jazel makes me feel just curled up in bed, watching TV. Or cooking some soupy viands for everybody to eat and after lunch go to sleep.

Hi friend, First aid kit is essential and we must keep it in our house, we don't know when will we face some unwanted accidents, if we have this first aid kid, we will do the first aid activities easily. In the same ways we must keep the emergency light, candles and batteries in the safe place, it will help us whenever we lost the electric power

I do not have a kit organized, but I should. Yes, you need both prescription and over the counter medicine and first aid items. I have two first aid kits. I have lots of candles, as well as a flashlight that you give power to by turning a hand crank. I bought some solar lights that recharge from the sun and I believe they are handy to have if the power goes out, but only if it is sunny, not in the rain. Here they recommend that you have a "stay bag" to stay in your home in an emergency and also a "go bag" that you could take with you if you evacuate. You should have on hand enough drinking water for three days for each person and food that you can eat without cooking it. Pet food as well if you have pets. It is funny how things like that worry us in the night.

I admit that we don't have a survival kit at home, but we do stock up on necessities. Every week, we always re-stock even though we still have some left. We never let our containers empty. Even the likes of canned good, noodles, fruit juices, dried meat and fish and even the basic meds and candles. Well, we actually have lots of candles in stock because we use them for the altar but of course they are also useful during power interruptions. Having a survival kit though is a good idea, something that is already pre-packed and prepared; something that you can just easily grab on without groping your way in the dark.
