What urges a man to become a hair stylist?

I understand chefs. We(men) have a tight connection with food. But a hair stylist? What is it they like? Hair(:P)? How can this be a passion? Normal and straight men can't choose this as a career. What's your opinion on that?

You think bricklaying cannot be creative? It certainly requires much more skill as do many building trades, certainly it is a trade and nothing is shameful in admitting that all the best urban

I guess you get what you pay for. I know that there are hairdressers and hair stylists and it takes creativity and a lot of training to become a stylist. Maybe in your part of the woods there are none but here, in Italy, there are many who style hair (as opposed to just cutting it) for both men and women - and it is not a trade

i have had my hair cut by a few men, one regularly, and he was married. i think they see it as something creative, like an artisan type of job, that involves making something look attractive, and crafting something. like being a pastry chef, or a tailor or even a woodturner. and it offers an opportunity for self employment, once you've learnt the skills, most male hairdressers i have met tended to own the shop, more so that with women. but i don't really know, as i am not a man.

oh kostas, you are being judgmental towards other men, and restricting yourself in a box of what's suitable for men, and what isn't, there was a time when men were embroiderers, and it was seen as a perfectly suitable job for a man, but now men can't be seen embroidering, but a beautifully embroidered picture is very attractive, and requires a great deal of skill. if you men all keep on restricting what can be described as manly you may leave yourselves with almost nothing left to do.

It can be creative but not for men. I can't even picture myself working for 8 hours with woman hair.

though to be fair, perhaps what you are really arguing is that devoting your life to hairdressing is a waste of time, because it is in many ways just vanity to want to spend large sums of money getting our hair done.

I am English and live in Italy. Here the most creative hair stylists (and fashion designers) are males but they are straight. They are creative artists and to consider that, just because they have an artistic streak they must be gay, is appalling, in my opinion

I wonder if you are also thinking of questioning why some males take up ballet as a career too?

I can accept ballet more than hair. I don't consider hair styling as an art, skill describes it better.

I know one man who is hair stylist and he is gay, but I am sure that it possible to find straight men who are hair stylists as well. I am not sure why some men choose that career, but they must find it interesting to work with women's hair. Many men probably wouldn't find it interesting, but I think that true about every career choice. No matter what kind of job you choose there will be people who don't understand why you find it fascinating. Today that the old gender roles where certain jobs were for women and certain jobs were for men have disappeared or almost disappeared in my country. There are woman who have jobs that were considered male jobs in the past and there are men who have jobs that were considered female jobs in the past, but it is a relatively small group of people. There are male nurses today, but when I went to nursing school we were 39 women and only one man!

Thanks for the response. You must be the only one to understand what I mean. Others think I have a problem with gay people or hairdressers/stylits. :P Just making conversation.

I have seen men who are hair stylists and cut both men and women's hair. There are women hairstylists who cut men and women's hair. I think it is great that men want to get into this profession and it is not only one type of man. I think as long as a man is making an honest living it does not matter what he does for a living. I would much marry a man who is a hairdresser rather than being with someone who sits at home and does nothing. I can understand if the man is retired, disabled and unable to work or if the man decides that he wants to be a stay at home dad and spend some quality time with his children, but I know of a few men who are able to work and refuse to work because they are lazy.

Well to be honest Kostas, I don't like to judge people for their decisions in life.. However, I do know that there are hair stylist who are so very straight and normal..and great professional they are married and great members of society.. But what I don't understand is why you have an issue with that..If thats what they want to do, whats the problem? at least they have a job that obviously they like...I just don't get it..and thats one mylotters opinion...

I am pretty open minded, I don't have a problem with this. Just opening a discussion, it is what we do here. And also, because it is something that most men would avoid.

"Is what we do here"...now that's a joke that is not even funny nor cute... I think the issue here is that you feel you have the authority to speak for " most men".. it must be men in your area..ok fine!!!

May be it is one of a handful of high paying occupation in his country or is a common way for a man to make a decent living in his society without the need for a university degree in order to cut and manage hair on others.

There are straight men..if there are women who love cars and extreme sports i believe there are also men who do love hair my friend. There is nothing wrong with it. reminds me of the movie by Adam Sandler, Don't mess with the Zohans. he was a fanatic of hair..and became a hair stylists.

I don't mean to be critical, but you really need to stop making such generalized statements, such as "most men" and "normal and straight men can't choose this as a career". I guess you are not aware that the best and most well known hairstylists are male, as well as the best chefs. Anyone can choose whatever they want to do.......

You are being very critical. And I don't like people telling me what I need to stop saying. Free world, enjoy it. Free your mind. I respect your age, but you should know by now not to put words in people's mouth. My opinion, my problem. Being a man gives you a "feeling" of what men like, wouldn't you agree? Yes, I know that the most famous chefs and hair stylists are men. And sure anyone can choose their way in life, I am not judging.

Well, I think it is right that every human being, able to exploit that for which he is moved, or just passion. A man can do many crafts, but the talent that he can put in place, those are all things for which he is brought. Now just talking about men hair, I've known one who has an age of about 55 years. I talked to him and he told me that do this job, since he was only 17 years old. I would say a passion brought forward in time.

To be honest I can not understand why a man wants to be a cook since most men don't like to cook at all or do the shoppings. They also don't like to wash dishes or clean up the kitchen, no matter how much they like food. I assume that a male hair stylist is a creative person? Although I doubt if this is the fact to most hair stylist if they only cut men. Most are not even shaving anymore (not much creative about shaving either). A part will take over the family business or is bored and just doesn't know what to do I guess. I hear the female hairdresses (but also other professions) say the same. I have to learn something. Still I think that if you have the great ones, no matter if it's a hair stylist, chef or whatever they like to create and are creative, just like painters or sculptures.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with a man being a hair stylist. The guy who does my hair when I need to have it tinted or cut is a guy with several children. He is my favorite since he knows what I want. Men seems better at hair styling because they know what makes a woman beautiful since they are the one who appreciate it most. If we accept the fact that women do jobs that are usually for men only, it follows that we also have to accept men doing jobs identified with women. It's only fair, isn't it?

Straight men can certainly can choose this as their career... why not? Just as they can choose to be an artist, chef, nurse, sales associate.Whats's the difference?

Chef - We like to eat Nurse - We care for others (again not too many men would pick this) Sales associate - It is just a job or an "art" for some) Ask your husband to wait for you IN the salon while you have your hair done an dtell me what he said. That's the difference.

And why do men are obstetricians? or nurses, doctors and what ever? each to their own and what they like to do! to me normal and straight go hand in hand! there is not normal and there is not straight we are all the same at the end of the day.

Not all Male hair stylists are Gay. Look at how many Men you see who style their hair. I style my hair but I have interest in doing other Jobs but there are plenty of other Men who have an interest in a career with Hair Styling.

'Hairstyle' is said to be "the thing women notice" about guys, like guys notice women's bust/cleavage (I saw/heard from an AXE Shampoo for Men commercial) Sure, there's the stereotypical weight that hangs from the job (how women are said to gossip in hair-salons, etc.); but ... have you seen Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the ... I forget the rest of the name, But it's about an Arab 'hero' who came to America and started working at a salon because he wanted to make hair silky-smooth ... or something. It's been a long time since I've seen that, but I get the feeling Sandler threw some stereotypes out the window with it.

NO, any men can be a hairdresser, why not? they like to do art with hairs, and they are happy when they can make a nice hair style for customers. I don't think it is wrong when a man becomes a hairdresser. It is an art work.

I believe if a person has a talent that they would love to show it off. Maybe he had to do his siblings hair growing up and developed a knack for it. And please let's not forget the number one reason a straight guy does anything....to meet women. I wouldn't mind having someone who knows how to do my hair(the money saved) lol.
