Frugal storage ideas anyone?

I live in a tiny house and there are four of us here. Sometimes it feels like we have so many things that the house is falling in on us. The designer of this house was awful at putting storage in. The closets are tiny. How can we make storage for our home? We have already purged everything we can get rid of. Now we just need to put it away smart. How can we fit our stuff in the space we have? I was thinking of making drawer organizers out of cereal boxes but thats all I have come up with so far.

I am not sure if this will work with you, but have you tried making use of the spaces underneath your beds? Me and my husband use this for some clothes that we seldom use yet we don't want to part with yet. Our closet is built-in and between the two of us it is not big enough. So we just put into the closet all the clothes that we normally wear on a daily basis. We bought from the local groceries those plastic containers with wheels and cover that fits exactly right under our beds and we put in it clothes that we can't wear right now because of the season or because it is calling for a special occasion.

I think this is a very good idea.I remember there being a bag insiode my bed too full of shoes. We even had some wood planks which went inside the bed.Often the bed had drawers huge one where we kept out wollies. Many a times utensils were packed and kept beneath the dining table.Phew my mummy had a tough time living in a one room appeartment. But thatsd her story whereas i have always lived in big houses and i still run out of places to keep mt things.I guess about good selection and keeping only what is really needed. And putting away things perfectly.I know it can be done but how and am too lazy too...

My handy hubby built us bed platforms that have cubbys the whole way around. We have 9 cubbies to use. Each one is about the size of a medium laundry basket and that is where we keep our shoes, dirty laundry ready to wash, our extra bedding and things of that sort. Each cubby has its own purpose. Underneath the main area of the bed is storage as well but it is full of the things we dont use as often but feel its important to have like our long term storage canned goods, and extra toiletries. We keep a good supply incase we need to live of it. We were looking into storing things under our dining table but I can figure out how to do it. I dont know how to make a drawer that wont be so low it sticks out or isnt accessable.

pintrest is a great place to find amazing storage ideas. cereal boxes are a great idea. we have a smallish house as well. for shoes, in our front closet, i have put in a bookshelf in the closet. also, if you have access to pallets that most companies throw out after their delivery, you could make all sorts of shelves and boxes that not only would look nice but cost pennies to make. Ikea is also a good place to find storage ideas too.

Pinterest has great ideas. Sometimes there are so many ideas that they are hard to sift through. So many people are so talented. I would love to experiment with free pallets if I knew where to get any. I should be there looking at ideas instead of here I guess lol, but this site is more fun.

You have some great ideas. I was going to suggest ottomans but I see you are doing that already. It seems to me maybe you are keeping too much stuff. When I moved from a house to an apartment I had to get rid of a lot of stuff. Instead of 20 pairs of shoes I now have 5 pairs and one pair of winter boots instead of 3 pairs. I buy a new pair at the end of the season at half price and give the other pair which is still good to charity. So all my shoes fit into the hall closet now. I also got rid of all the extra bedding. I now keep 4 sheets and pillow slips for myself and one extra set flattened out in a platic bag with a zipper in case I need it for company. I only really needed 2 extra blankets not 5, same with duvets. It works out fine. I see my daughter-in-law struggling with this also.Finding extra storage in a small house with 4 people. The problem is too much stuff. Anyway for basement storage large plastic bins with tight fitting lids are great. It keeps everything clean and free of insects and mold. I have obtained other storage items such as baskets with lids for very little money at Goodwill and the Salvation Army stores. I use them on top of bookcases to store extra dishes that are used seldom and stationary. I even have one such basket in the kitchen to store my home made preserves since I don't have a basement now. Decluttering is an ongoing process which helps solving the storage dilemma.

We keep two sets of sheets, one for the bed and one to put on when we swap, for each bed in the house. This works well because if anything happens to the sheets then we can get by with the one set until we find a new set. We also have two blankets for each bed, one summer blanket that is thinner and one winter blanket that is thicker. We keep a throw for each of us in the basement for movie nights but I guess we could just take the blankets off our beds and gain that much more room in the house. We have thrown so much away already and it comes down to throwing away stuff we use regularly or finding a spot for it.

I pile all my bedding and throw on my bed. I have this method that I use. In the summer I place my summer blanket onto the top sheet, on top of that my winter duvet, then my bedspread to make the bed look nice then I put my throw across the bed at the foot of the bed. At bedtime I roll all the unneeded stuff to the foot of the bed. In the winter I place my winter duvet on top of the top sheet, then my summer blanket, then my bedspread and then my throw across the bed. At night I roll up all the stuff that I don't need.

I'm thinking about getting the bags that you use the vacuum to take the air out to make sheets store in less space. It would mean more would fit in the cupboard. My daughter stacks boxes under her bed, so she can fit more in her room. She likes to use shoe boxes for the small items.

Those vac bags might be great for things like extra bedding. That stuff takes up so much space and if we could just compact it down we could get more in less space and free up some extra space for other things. Ill have to go get one of those on our next payday and see how they work. Thank you!

I have lived in small places with kids all my life so storage is all I know! Necessity! But one thing that is easy to do...use everyday things as storage. I have these 3 baskets with attached lid. They look really nice and "patio-y". They are square nad about 12x10. I stack them and they just make a nice breezy decoration in the dinning room area (very casual dinning room...off kitchen) And what do I put inside? I have 3 grand daughters and each one has a basket for little toys for them to play with when they come around! I have 3 more in green that matches my bathroom and I have them stacked in the corner,...looks nice but I store shampoos and bath room stuff in them..when I stock up on stuff. One is for toothpaste etc, one for shampoo etc and the other is for makeup and lotions etc! Works great..stores the stuff and looks great! Same idea if you can find a bench...that lifts up with storage underneath. Your drawer organizer is a great idea. I use wire baskets too for on the counters...put all the stuff in them instead of littering the counter with everything!

Ive though about building an ottoman that has hidden storage like that. My kids each have seats that I build that open up and are bins. When you line the three up it makes a bench. Its been nice for the storage, I just wish my kids would keep them organized. I was going to make a few more for our house just to have the extra seating space in the basement and to hold our blankets. I just dont want so many little storage cubes that it looks like instead of junk clutter I have storage cubes clutter lol.

We live in a small space, too (less than 250 square feet for two people, three cats and all of our stuff). I am trying to take this as an opportunity to decrease the amount of stuff that we have; simplifying is difficult, though. We are fortunate that this space was designed with quite a bit of storage. However, it is impossible to fit all of our stuff into here comfortably. Some of it is in storage; the rest is crammed into here. Baskets are a good way to organize things that need to be out and accessible. A hanging pot rack is good, if your ceiling is high enough. Adding additional shelves anywhere you possibly can--especially in otherwise unused corners--can give some more space.

250 square feet is a tiny space. We have almost three times that. There are four of us and a dog. You must have a great sense of organizing. That sounds like a challenge to me. I know I should get rid of things, its just how to decide what I am struggling with. I use all my pots and pans but I know that there just isnt room. I feel like if I got down to less pots I might have to change the way I cook. I try to cook all our meals at home and it seems hard to have to do it all in just a few pots.

I'm not quite as good as I'd like to be in terms of organizing. Of course, the space is a bit smaller than I'd like. For us, according to my personal formula, we really need about 350 square feet--100 per human adult and 50 per fuzzy or human child.

I think that you could look at small storage units at a second hand shop. You could get a tall and thin unit that could house lots of stuff. Making drawer organizers out of scrap pieces wood would be a good idea. Card isn't strong enough to last. At a one dollar shop they sell trays that are useful for storing some jigsaws. It is possible to put up hooks and hang bags on them. It is great to buy some storage boxes which can be stacked and are cheap. Good luck with some more frugal ideas of storage in your home.
