Boo! Did I startle you?

The other night my dad fell asleep with my mom standing over him (once again, my 53 yr. old mother has dementia). This isn't new. He'll wake up and she's standing there, just staring at him. She won't stay in bed, and often wanders around the house (she never leaves the house). So he fell asleep in bed and a few hours later, BAM! My mom fell asleep standing up and fell over on top of my dad like a tree. He said it startled him so badly he never could go back to sleep that night. What's the worst way you've been awakened from sleep?

I think that would be really surprising, and alarming.

I have to say Hatley, I love the scenery I've seen in pictures and videos of California, but I do not envy you for your earthquakes. I'd rather have a tornado any day.

I think for me its horrible as your just drifting off and then for some reason its like your falling in your sleep or something and your jerked awake. I always compared it to the scene in the movie lost boys when Michael falls into his bed, at least that is how it feels to me when it happens. My daughter is a joker and loves to prank her father and me. The other day I was just falling asleep when I heard a blood curdling scream. I jumped up and was so sad to see her sitting in the corner watching me. She laughed so hard because I jumped up out of bed even though I was asleep. She still laughs about it telling me that she wished she had recorded it cause the look of terror on my face was priceless. Now I am racking my brain trying to find a way to get her back lol. Not the same reasons as your dads but still quite startling.

I think my own dreams wake me up the worst. Or a cat sneezing in my face might be one as well. I am sorry for the fright this must have caused both of them.

Oddly enough, it didn't scare my mother. I thought it was a very weird occurrance. My sister however found this incredibly amusing when I told her yesterday. I just felt bad for him.

your poor father! my father in law has altzheimers and so i know what you mean. i guess the worst way i have been woken up is by a bad dream. i dreamt over the summer that burghers had come into the house and it was one of those dreams that feel so real. it was very scary!

Probably by flashing lights outside my bedroom...I live on a busy street and there is alot of traffic. Occasionally someone gets picked up! LOL...and when they pull them over its usually right outside my bedroom window...it's an eerie feeling kinda like what your day went throught but not as scary! I bet it was a shocker!

I am just glad she fell on him and not on the floor and hurting herself more. Hopefully they are both okay. I am wracking my brain for the worst way I've been awakened from sleep but I can't think of any. Not even a tornado can wake me up if I am sleepy enough.

Hmmmm let's see where to start! I have woken up to a dog having his cute face right in front of me (he was sitting, staring, watching me sleep). I had been ill that day and he could always sense when something was wrong with me, usually he'd cuddle with me in bed but that day he literally watched over me. He was the cutest 1/2 dalmatian, 1/2 blue healer ever and I miss him immensely! I have woken up to kids poking me in the face or sticking their face in mine and whispering "mommy". I have woken up to my boyfriend kissing my cheek as he whispers "good morning beautiful" which is the sweetest thing ANY man has ever done for me. And their are times where I am stressed and I either wake up from grinding my teeth or having a dream where I'm falling and I twitch and freak myself out. BUT to answer your question the last one for sure is the worst way! That or the doorbell or the phone because I need a few minutes to wake up before attempting to reach or stand!

The worst way I have woken up is to someone screaming threats. I thought it was little kids until I fully got awake. It was 3am and a woman was standing outside my window, screaming up to the apartment where the guy had locked her out. She was screaming profanities and threatening to kill him. That was for sure the worst way I've ever woken up.

Oh wow! That is quite the way to way to wake up my friend! So sorry to hear that happened to you, I would have been freaked out for sure. That makes my worst ways of waking up seem like nothing.

Aww, poor dad.. I think the worse way I had been woken up was when my youngest daughter went through a "bad dream" stage and when she woke up, she woke up screaming at the top of her lungs. This went on for a few years, (like from age 7-10) and only happened occasionally, but it shocked me each time. The most horrible time was when we went camping one year and she was in a different tent, I couldn't open that tent fast enough.....

That would have been horrible, not being there right away to see it was a dream. I have to admit I did probably cause my sister to wake up in the worst way possible. I crawled into bed with her one night (I was seven, she was nine) when I didn't feel well, thinking she made me feel better. Unfortunately, five minutes later I sat up and before I could get up, threw up. On her right arm. She was rudely awakened and screamed for my mother.

I don't mean to laugh, but WOW! Was your sister mad at you or did she understand you didn't do it on purpose?

She was mad. It didn't matter that I thought she made all my pain go away. It only mattered that she got throw up on her. Can't say I blame her.

When I was still with my ex he would drink to excess. One night he and I were arguing and i just could not get through to him. I finally decided I was going to bed because I had to be to work early the next morning. Next thing I knew I was being awakened by my husband jumping up and down on the bed.

Oh feel free to laugh. We can find the humor. Wow, a fire! That would scare me so badly I don't think I'd be able to fall asleep for a while, no matter where I was living.

Your poor father. He has to cope with so much looking after your mother. What a good man he is to look after her so well. I can imagine how scared her was. Dementia is an awful disease for your mother to have and I would not wish it on anyone. What is also sad is that persons with dementia can live a very long time and they are unaware that they have the disease. How brave he is and I am so glad that he has you to give him the support that he needs.

Good thing she never leaves the house. I guess you made also sure that all doors are locked that she has no way to open it. What if one day she will wander around outside your house?

The doors are always locked. And as the family in question, we are aware of what we have to do to keep her safe.

The worst way I was startled awake was when my husband came home from work one day and yelled at me. Apparently our youngest, who I had told not to go outside and where I'd be in the house, couldn't find me. I let him know beforehand that I was going to get some sleep as I hadn't been getting enough lately. Before I went to sleep I stressed what room I'd be in and NOT TO GO OUTSIDE. I even locked the very top of the door so he couldn't get out. I repeated this over and over again like mom's tend to do to make sure that he understood what I was saying before I laid down. Next thing I knew my husband (who was supposed to be at work), was standing at the foot of the bed, yelling at me! Needless to say, it scared the hell out of me! Here I had been asleep and woke up in complete shock! I had no idea what was going on! My husband continued to yell and I found out that our youngest had gotten out and was at our neighbor's house. Apparently the neighbor had called my husband saying they couldn't find me. My husband was fuming, I'd never seen him so mad. Not only did he have to leave work early (and unfinished), but he had to leave all his tools there (not a good idea in his line of work), just to find me which made him even more mad. I somehow explained to him what happened. I also added that I had put the top lock on the door, so our son couldn't get out. We later found out from our son how he "escaped". But at the time, none of that mattered. All that matter was that my husband thought I was gone and left the kids alone (which, by the way, I'd never done). Even after all the explaining was done my husband wasn't too happy about the whole thing for a long time. Funny thing about it though was that it was his idea for me to catch up on my sleep. He knew I hadn't been getting enough at the time and insisted on sleeping whenever I got the chance. Sheesh, talk about ironic. I couldn't win at all! LOL In the end everything worked out. We can even laugh about it now. Happy mylotting!

HI AmbiePam I had the oddest dream as I thought I was with a friend and we both had had trouble with people messing around our cars. then suddenly I drove to where he was with his car wrapped around a tree.
