Until now I don't know of any scientific explanation of why there are times we feel we suddenly fall while we are sleeping. The feeling is so real like you are standing up and you lose your balance and after that you woke up from sleep. I had a dream one time I am sitting on a chair and the chair suddenly move and I slipped out of the chair but it was only a dream but the feeling is so real. What do you call it?

Interesting discussion! I had dreams in the past when I felt like I was falling also. So upon reading this discussion I found this article http://www.dreamsleep.net/commondreams/meaning-of-falling-dream.html

I really like the explanation that it could mean loss of emotional equilibrium or self-control or may be cause by insecurity or fear of failure. The monkey thing I don't believe. Great link, thanks a lot.

Hi thanks for the dream website. Seems falling is a common dream. I used to get that once in a while. I noticed my children get that too. The explanation in the dream website does the explaination well. Thanks again.

...and you will be awakened because you kick yourself in the real world after you slipped off in your dream I've experienced them a lot of times too, especially when I am very tired or if I have a fever.

That is quite funny as you kick yourself or you react as if everything is real.

I don't know if there is anything special that you would call this sensation, but I can definitely tell you that you are not alone with experiencing something like this when sleeping. I've had it happen to me several times. I remember also when I was in school that a lot of people said that when you would have that happen, if you did not jerk awake when it was happening, then you would die. However, I really don't think that is the case at all.

I have not heard of that it's bad if one did not awoke after the jerk. It could just be some sign of growing up.

Haahh....very funny incident and I started discussion on it my sweet and danger hubby falls from our bed when he stand I saw him and ask how you fall he replied he was in dream of girl friend. I laughed and say hmmmm if you think about girl friend means falling is good he replied dear how funny I am joking you push me so I fall. We both laughed. You are right some time we sleep on chair or in train and suddenly loose balance and we fall.

Falling in the pavement- yeah it sounds right. The feeling is actually like that. It is a funny feeling since how can you feel falling when you are lying in your bed?

I also experience this when I was a kid. This usually happens before going into a deep sleep. I dreamt I was balancing on a pole then suddenly I drop then I wake up feeling it was so real that I tend to jerk. Thanks angelkarah for that informative sharing. Now I know what it's called. Happy MyLotting everyone!

With the cat asleep on my lap earlier this evening,I found myself nodding off too,and went with it...and in my dream, part of the road into town from here would be straight, but the land the road covers is undulating, with "hidden dip" warning signs in place..a 4x4 in front pulled over to drive on the grass verge(!),and I noticed the bouncy sensation of my car starting to "float" on the suspension..and at the top of the next incline,I took off, soaring high into the air! I woke with a start at the point when the car was nosing downward.. (I feel I should point out that I hadn't yet seen the successful space diving parachute jump record at this point..) I wouldn't be aware of a technical term for this dream sensation, but the feeling of falling would be quite a common dream theme...

Well, sometimes it happens with a dream, sometimes there are really no dreams and you really feel that you are starting to fall but then you are not over a high place so you feel funny because you feel having a free fall while in fact you are just resting.

When I was young, mom told me if I had some dreams like urs, it infers that I'm growing, which part of my body did I fall on the ground first means that part is grwong, such as if u felt like the leg fell on first ur leg must be growing and become longer than before, haha. That's just a childish lie but I really believed in it at that time, so don't fret about this so much, that's just an ordinary phisical reflection.

I also experience this sometimes. When I'm not into deep sleep yet. I know I'm asleep but I have the feeling of falling and then suddenly I jerk. LOL. It's called myoclonic jerk. The feeling of falling is hypnic jerk if I remember it correctly. LOL. My husband sometimes wakes up when I jerk. He laughs at me. However, severe myoclonus is somewhat alarming. I guess they are symptoms of some diseases. I'm glad I only have myoclonic once in a while. I guess it's not severe at all. Happy mylotting.

I have had several dreams of falling, too. It was mostly during my childhood. I have read articles about it saying that it is about one's insecurities and anxieties. But when I look back, I don't remember being in a real tough situation that could associate it with that.

Now that I am grown up it is very rare too. I am not sure also what events could trigger that in my life.

I have experienced the same many times. It mostly happen while I was just taking a nap or I just got asleep. Yes, the feeling is so real that it makes me move. There's this one time I dreamed of climbing the stairs but the stairs is upside down. I am like spiderman climbing on the wall and definitely my hands are weak to hold that position and fall from it.

I guess some people may have not experience that, sudden jerks also happen to me and I wonder if it has something to do with our brain activity.

I don't know the scientific term for this dream experience, but I do think it is quite common, because everyone I know has had this in their childhood, and less often in their adulthood. I had this experience a lot as a kid.

Hi! I relate on your discussion. And I often feel the same thing. And whenever I felt that thing, I thought there was something pulling my body into the ground and I thought that I was falling from a building. And it's really a weird feeling! :)

Right, the feeling is like that something is pulling down your body or you are falling from a high building, kind of weird!

We have a discussion n hat in psychology.. it is part of a rem cycle or something..it's called myoclonic jerk or something. it is natural, even i experienced it sometimes, it's annoying though since it really wakes me up.

Your right, I found that it can be known as myoclonic jerk. What could be the reason why it occurs? I will find out more about it or is there a significant reason for that event to happen.

Hi averygirl! There are times that I experience this thing too especially when I am so tired. However, I also don't know how to call this thing. That is also one cause why my sleep is being interrupted. But I don't give it much attention because I am thinking it is just part of our dreams. Unless, somebody would tell me that I have to worry about it. Have a nice day!

It may not be a worry because it happens really quick and I guess it happens to others too. Right now I no longer experience it, that was way before.

I also experience this once in a while. Usually I would be dreaming that I am moving or on the go. Then when in my dream I fell down or I trip, my body will also jerk as if anticipating the impact of the fall. I think I am half-awake, half-dreaming at this state and I will know in that instant that I was just dreaming. Sometimes I would be pissed because I was awoken but then it isn't hard for me to go back to sleep.

That is the exact feeling, you also feel the jerk to anticipate the fall. I guess it happens early on the first phase of getting asleep.
