I substitute taught half a day which ended up being 1 1/2 hours.

It was the day that Hurricane Sandy was supposed to hit. They shortened the school day because we were starting to get wind and rain. It was supposed to hit, full force in a few hours. It stalled way below us. So it didn't come up here. So my half a day was very short, they sent the children home early. So did you ever have a shorter day than you expected at a job? I had only a few hours at a temp service job one time that I thought would be for many days. They made me buy reinforced toe shoes (used to be called steal toe, but there isn't really steal in some of them any more) which cost me more money than I made that day. So I don't generally buy something for a job any more unless I know I will get more money than I put in. I wasn't asked to wear steal toe shoes again, but I often did in wear houses anyway. So have you spent more money than you made on a part-time job?

Oh good I am glad you didn't get the storm in full force, there is another member who lives in NY that I haven't heard from since Sandy came through. As for the temp job, I kind of gave up on that and I am working not only my synopsis, but NaNoWriMo this month and that is more than a full-time job...lol

I just read about NaNoWriMo on my email from the North Country Center for the Arts. I'm not quite motivated to do a writing in a month. I've got things I started years ago that I haven't finished. I need a fiyrsh month. Finish your sh*# month. That would be useful for me.

I don't think I could have started this without finishing my first book, it would have been too distracting and confusing. I am sorry, I know you probably are not motivated...

I'm always motivated to start, but not for the middle or the end. I have all these ideas to begin with and then I fizzle out.

The Philippines get hit by typhoons at an average of 15 to 20 a year, yes just like Sandy it's been hitting as stronger, wider scope and not the average time you would expect it, oh friend guess it has something to do with the damage we have done to Earth, no shorter days for me friend cause i am in business that is always open but more to do with my children and their education. Yes please stay safe always

How do you deal with 15 to 20 typhoons per year? I know there are a lot of islands and they used to not all get hit, but on an island there isn't much of a place to go. like in the USA, if they tell us to leave, we have the rest of the country we can go to.

Where I live, we have very high mountains that we can flee to or go farther inland like to another state or even flee to Canada. Yes, most places have architecture adapted to what happens there. We didn't used to get hurricanes or tornadoes in NY State so I can understand why NYC doesn't have the architecture. Like we have tons of insulation for sub-zero weather that you would not have. We know we will have sub-zero weather every year. It's people who live in southern built trailers without much insulation who I feel sorry for because I didn't know that and bought a southern trailer one time. Awful! Thanks and take care.

for centuries we have learned " what will be will be" so we had adopted pretty much in terms of architecture as can be seen in the Batanes Islands where every house is made and built of stones, yep no where to run and no place to hide, in the islands it's face the sea or go up to a higher ground but the danger is the mudslide so people better be careful in cutting down trees. Our structures are lighter so it's better adopted, the same cannot be applicable in a place like the " Big Apple"

Sometimes it seems like transportation costs eat up most of my income, but I usually come out a little bit ahead. Not always enough to make it worth it. Nowadays, I only take clients if they live near another client or near me.

I think you're not alone. Gas prices are really hurting people's incomes. Good that you can find some clients close together or near you. Thanks and I hope you get some really good pay checks.

Hubby and I were told we had a job once, and went out and bought appropriate clothes, then were never given any work. Some things I could return, like the white long sleeve collared shirt. The black pants and black shoes I used at another job. I used to work at Head Start and we once had an unexpected snow storm, sent the morning kids home early and canceled the afternoon. The food for the day was already prepared so they fed us, we shoveled the cars out and went on our way. Yes it was a shorter day than we had planned for.

Later, like two years later, this same company has contacted us, and we turned them down and told them why. We both ended up needing the black pants and black shoes for other jobs so there was no loss there. I had not even taken the shirts out of their packaging, so I got the money back. I think people have a lot more in common than we realize. I have been seeing this ever since I was a teen. Some people and organizations try to capitalize on our differences and polarize us, turning us into opponents when we really need to work together for the common good.

So many things that we've had in common. Interesting, so far away, yet such parallel lives. That rots that you didn't get any work and bought the clothes for it. Geesh!

Your last two sentences, unfortunately during this recession, the strategy to divide us seems to be working. Esp. in politics. I soooo agree that we need to work together for the common good.

When my kids were little it seemed that I was spending almost as much as I made on their childcare...whew..those were tough times. I am glad I hung in there though because things have worked out pretty good now because of it.

Sometimes you have to just hang on until the tough times get better. Many people are experiencing such tough times because of gas that they really are having it rough. So far (knock on wood), my family has been able to tread water fast enough to keep up.

it is a shame that there are storms that they're coming. Bulgaria still we had a hurricane but at the expense of one earthquake had a magnitude 5 5 on the Richter scale! we should be grateful for being alive and healthy! gentle and peaceful day!

I'm very grateful that we didn't get hit with the storm. 90mph winds down below us. That's unbelievable for us.
