Sleeping Sickness Away

When I came out of hospital eight months ago having had major surgery I felt tired now most of the time. That tiredness is relatively quickly but two day I find that there is still a period, usually in the afternoons, where I just have a complete loss of energy and feel extremely tired. I have heard it said that it can take up to a year to get over surgery and whilst there are no physical problems I wonder whether this tiredness is still related to my surgery or to something else. It is quite frustrating because the tiredness always hits me just at the point where I want to be doing something else. I will finish now, I'm in need of a nap!

Yes, people always feel tired and weak after surgery, because their body is no longer as active before. But as you said, that it been a long time already, I suggest you to check with your operation doctor to get an answer. Other than that, after operation, one should eat more healthy foods, and rest more.

Thank you. I have just had a CT scan and I am fine. Maybe it's psychological.

A doctor once told me that it takes about a year for the body to completely recover from the effects of anesthesia and that seems reasonable. Surgery is traumatic and your body is telling you that it is still healing and bringing things back to normal. When you feel sleepy you should listen to what your body is telling you and let it sleep. Sleep is one of the best things we can do when we're ill or recovering--it gets us out of the way and lets the body do its job.

I am very lucky because I am able to be at home when I like. I listen but it doesn't make it any easier to bear when it strikes. I sit quietly and let it happen.

I don't know if it is related to your surgery, but I am a firm believer in listening to your body. If it wants some extra sleep, give in to that. Your body is able to focus the best on healing yourself while sleeping, so extra sleep is a good thing, not a bad thing. Don't deny it if it is what your body is asking for.

I didn't fight it Annie. I let it wash over me until it had gone.

If you go to bed and dream about all of us...maybe you aren't getting the rest you think you are? That would make you for tired, no matter how much you slept.
