What will you do if you got stuck by the fish bone?

When I am young, my mum used to tell me to be careful when eating fish. If we happen to swallow the fish bone, then just drink water. If we got stuck at the throat, she asked us to quickly swallow a spoon of rice and try to swallow everything down. It is not easy. I normally will try to get the bone out, if not then I quickly eat a spoon of rice like my mum said. Sometimes it works! Any suggestion?

When I was young my lovely mum also gave the same advice. Swallow a spoonful of rice when fish bone got stuck in our throat. Alternately swallow a banana. Spoonful of rice or banana work like magic. My fellow myLotters, you may try it next when you encounter fish bone stuck in your throat.

Your mum is definitely right. It's better you see properly before putting the piece of fish inside your mouth. Even better if your wife cook for you salmon fish fillet. Or steam code fish that have bigger bone that can be easily seen. Fish is a healthy food ...go for it!

You are so blessed to have such a loving wife. I hope you will love her more and get something special for her this Christmas and maybe your 20th Anniversary ...

You are absolutely right. When we eat at the restaurant my wife usually checks and counter-checks the fish for any tiny tinny bone for my son and me before we eat. Such wonderful wife! She normally cooks cod fish that has bigger bones and that solves the big problem of tiny bones. Have a good fish meal.

Yes, eating something like rice is good for things like this. I have also been known to eat a slice of bread as well when something gets stuck. Just is quite annoying if it does.

Another thing to eat is bread, bread can sometimes dislodge the fishbone stuck in the throat, and as you mentioned water. I don't tend to eat much fish now, when I was a child I remember having fish at this hotel with my parents and I got a fishbone caught in my throat, that is when one of the waiters suggested bread, fortunately it worked, but it had scratched my throat and was sore afterwards, but at least it was gone.

My husband also avoid taking fish with many bones, I guessed he too have had a bad experience when he was young. The waiter is quite good as he can react fast to suggest the bread. I always tell my son careful and watch out for bones, at times it is really hard to see it. Thank you very much for sharing and Happy New year !

My mother also suggests the same thing, that is, to eat a spoonful of rice. Other times she suggests, eating a big chunk of banana. It will help flush down the fish bone. But what I want is to buy a boneless fish to avoid the hassle of enduring pain once that tiny bone is caught in my throat.

Thank you for being the first one to response. Truly appreciate it. You made my day! Yes, you are absolutely right! To avoid this hassle, I nowadays bought salmon fish fillet for my son. My mum will advise me to buy fish that have big bone which can easily seen and remove. There is once I bought herring fish, and my mum said "oh, that is a lot of tiny fish bone, you must avoid buying this type of fish in the future." I still have a lot to learn. thanks for sharing!

Yes it works, best if the rice is bit hard, mesh it, make few balls and swallow without water, it will take the bone inside..

Dear Professor, It seems this advise do have its practicality. Nowadays, I will buy fish fillet and seasoned it with turmeric powder. It taste good and my son loves it. Overall fish is a healthy food and we should not avoid eating it just because it has bones. Thanks for sharing and do keep in touch in myLot.

Looks like being afraid of being stuck with fishbone you are trying not to buy boneless fish. Looks like fish is dangerous food. Do you know there is some bone-enriched fish that taste a lot or extra ordinary? To avoid fish bone sticking we murt sort out bone first with lots of care and attentions.lol Or IF YOU WANT TO AVOID BEING STUCK WITH FISHBONE THEN YOU MUST FRY THE FISH FOR LONG TIME UNTIL IT GETR CRISPY. Always be with crispy fish.

Dear kashidanga971, I like your idea of frying the fish for a long time so it gets crispy. My mum used to buy tiny or small Pomfret fish and deep fried it. My son loves it, he bites the bones and it is edible too. Crispy and tasty! You are right too, I can debone the fish before I cook it. That way I no need to worry. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful tips.
