How do you deal with disappointment?

I work in a market research where I am to make calls to random people to conduct a survey. My problem is most of them say they are busy and some don't even listen to what you say. I know it is annoying to receive these calls but it is my job to do it. How do you deal with disappointment? Will you give up your job and find another one which are more easier to be done?

Well, your basic problem seems to be handling disappointment. In this case your job seems to be your principal problem. Haven't you noticed that you are not able to concentrate on your work when you are disappointed? If you are paid well for this particular job you are doing then you ought to try and improve the way you approach your job. Every job has its own positives and negatives. Maybe its important for you think of some of the positive things that your job offers you and then decide about giving it up. All the best.

No I don't give up anytime. Why because in any job today you have to deal with people. Moreover if I want to call up they also will say something that you won't like. These are pressure situations ,I am somewhat disheartened but I make new strategies so that I can convince people. I am also facing the same problems in my internet dealings. But I constantly motivated people about the advantages they can have by joining. Sometimes people will refuse but I don't get disheartened as there are still some people who listen to you.

thnx and yeah you can implement some of them .First and foremost is market research and internet is the best place for it.Then chalk out a plan abotu your products. What I recommend is having a blog or site of your own.It is the safest and best way to get people to know you. So if you can follow these can sureky get success.

When I was in college I took a job doing telemarketing for alumni donations. This was a job that was quite difficult at times because there was always some reason that the alumni didn't have time to listen to my spiel. Now what I did was that I just learned to deal with the disappointments that I would have when I was working because of the fact that I wouldn't have been able to find a different job that would have been able to work around my schedule the way that this particular on campus job was able to do.

I think it all depends on the earnings that you get from this job. If it is good then keep on doing it, but the most important thing is to be confident of what you are proposing them. You are surveying about some product or some ideas, and if you have all the required knowledge about it then it will be more comfortable for you. Also make sure that product is really good for you and society and environment. If it is then you will feel confident to demonstrate it. I think that is the key.

Yes it is comfortable, like last time we do a project called Vaccination. I get very happy doing it but now it is about Sports, I really get bored.

DO you receive more earnings when you can fill a particular survey or you are just receiving a fixed earnings?

Hello...I am an Statistics major and I can feel what you feel. Such kind of research method is pretty much disappointing since people tend to reject you since they can't see you. They will not understand you since they are not aware of what you are doing and the reasons nor the results of it. I think your company does not have enough budget in order to conduct a house to house survey, which I think is more effective compared to just having phone interviews. If you are always disappointed, try to look for a much more rewarding career!

They also have face to face interview but I select telephone interviews in the office cos I don't like the sun at day time, so hot and traffic jam.

Disappointment is quite hard to adjust most especially that you can’t get over with the situation, what I normally do is to take a deep breath and think on good possibilities that would somehow help resolve the situation.

Nice idea, my office is adjoined with a shopping mall, when I am stress I usually go in the shopping for a walk and take a deep breath, after that I will return to the office.

That's good to hear. You can unwind at the mall, just don't buy things that is not planned on your budget.

that can be disheartening. but then i think you should be able to get pass that and try harder next time. sometimes people are really just hard to talk to... in person and especially over the phone. people will only think of you as a waste of their time for nothing in return. i wish you luck though. if it is something you love doing, then why give it up. know still if you want to pursue it, if not then i think that should be okay if you try to find a more fulfilling job.

The bad side of this call center is their survey is 30 minutes long and sometimes more than 45 minutes and they do not have prize or cash to give to the respondents, which makes me embarrased to say to them this company is doing so. Your idea is good, everyone has to pass an obstacle before they gain money.

I usually can find out the happiness of the common life, which makes me hard to be disappointed. But sometimes all things seem go wrong, and I will find that I can not do things successfully. At that time, I will sit down to make a list and check all the things I have to do. Then reguklar them from the easiest to the hardiest. Soon after make out the list, I will begin the easiest one and do them one by one. After get one success after another, it is easy for you to find self-confidence and keep disappointment away.

I would like to try that, listing down the easier then the hardest may be strange but I am going to try that, dandan! Good day

hello there, first of is this the job that you really want to do? if so, I think you should think of ways to make your job more enjoyable maybe you can ask for some coaching or gather techniques in order for you to not get bored with your job.But if you really want to quit or give this job up make sure you have an alternate activity to do .I have once heard that if you really like and love the job that you're in you will never ever think and feel that you are working. :) I think when you give up your job find a job that you really like doing I hope this helps!! ;)

I can't ask for more, I already found a job of my interest, just that I need to improve myself and motivate myself when I meet disappointment, its just nature of the job, I am making it a big fuss of it. Sorry guys and gals.

This is a numbers game. The more you call, the more you might get better at it, and better at how to deal with the disappointment. If you cannot cope with such disappointment, maybe this kind of job is not for you. Do consider a job with at least a basic pay and not just fully based on commission. It can be very tough knowing that you might end up with nothing in a month. That thought will keep ringing in your ear and affect how you might approach the people you call. I don't take such jobs well, so I would probably check myself how long I can last on such a job. Maybe while you are at it, start looking for something else. Maybe a better job might come around and at least you have a choice. Think about it.

Yes, my supervisor also have told me this job is like numbers game, sometimes I try to work longer than 6 hours and really it brings me more successful interviews, just that I can't enjoy the job more than 6 hours. Ha...ha...is it normal?

I'd try to find another job that I enjoyed, not always easier to be done. Because when I enjoy the job, I can deal with any disappointment, even though actually this 'disappointment' is same with the previous job.

My oldest daughter does a similar job part time, as she is a student, and I was talking to her the other day about the problems of phoning so many people who don't want to talk to her. she doesn't seem to have any confidence issues, and yet she doesn't like the calls where people don't want to talk to her, either, so you just have to not take it personally. its not about you, its just the nature of the job, anyone who does a job like that will have the same experience, of people who don't want to talk, its nothing personal. so just carry on, and hopefully if you do it for a while it will look good on your cv, and you can find another job you will enjoy more.

I have tried many jobs before like insurance, legal, awning, construction, developer, promoters but all of them I quit as soon as I meet disappointment whether it is on my employer or colleagues. I guess this is the bestest job I ever had and I don't want to leave the call center like what I left the above office job last time.

Whether I am happy or not, I need to have a job to earn a living. So I have learned to live with any disappointments that I may encounter when I am doing my job. To look for a better job is good only when you can find one. I think nobody likes to do difficult work when there is an easier one. But it is not easy to get an easy job with good pay nowadays.

Well,i definitely agree that its a difficult job to do.And i know the thoughts in mind and different things you would be going through right now.But then i have better suggestions, tell them their inputs are needed for the research for better plans and things for them.Tell them they have been selected special and would like to hear their inputs. And if their inputs are worthy, they might get some rewards and things in future. In this way, atleast you might get some more favours from the people. To some people who are busy, ask their alternate times to contact. And tell them your company would love to hear their thoughts and feedback. If you feel you are not enjoying the job or is more stressed, i guess then you would need to find another job.But then that is after trying all these options. It nice to end things after knowing that you have given all your best for things. It would also help in improving your confidence in many fronts. Its not easy to deal with disappointment. You need to learn the lessons from failures and move on.Some of the wounds would take time to heal. Thanks!

Hi i can understand ,making calls to unknown people and in marketing is not so easy. Many dont respond properly and yes as you said they say they are busy. I think it depends upon our point of view many may find marketing as easy job and can attract the customers to talk and answer. I think i am not capable of doing any marketing job and would try to find another one but meanwhile i will continue this one as i need money. Is your job target based ?
• Malaysia
13 Jan 13
Yes, it is based on targets but if you fail to meet the target also no problem as long as you work your best. That is what I like about this company.

hello friend, I can understand what you are going through. I was a part of a new start up company a year ago and I was a part of the marketing team also. I had been through all these things and frustrations and yes, i did quit the job which had a great future in store for me just because I couldn't do this with all my heart. I couldn't handle it well and then I realized that it was my cup of the tea to do this marketing and stuffs and then I just quit it. Now I am working in a place where I am all comfortable and happy with the work i am doing. I would suggest you to just quit the job when you are not happy about it. After all, job satisfaction is also a thing. But, if there could be problems with getting another job immediately and you have no other option other than to just work here no matter whether you like it or not, then , stay patient. Work here, but search outside for better jobs that suit you. As soon as you get your type of the job, leave this.

If I got disappointed, I will probably "mourn" for it for a while and then move on. There's no sense in dwelling over it for long when there's other more important things and opportunities that's waiting for me. In every job, disappointments will always be there, given in different doses from different sources. But if you really like what you do, you will just take every disappointment like that with a grain of salt and move on. But if the very job that you're doing is something that you don't particularly like, then I guess it's safe for me to say that you will be disappointed a lot of times.

I would if I didn't really like the job. If it was something I was passionate about, like writing or art, I wouldn't give up so easy.
