Prohibited Tarpaulins

Philippines

Election is just few months away but the campaign period is not yet officially started. However, there are lots of tarpaulins with faces of the candidates in every corner. This strategy is also called as premature campaign. I heard in the news earlier that there is a town in Cavite that prohibits the use of tarpaulins. This is supported by the environmental groups in their town. This is a great move for that municipality. I just hope that this will be also implemented here in our province (Bulacan) since they are already going to implement the use of plastics in the entire province. This is not only to prevent premature campaigns but to help save the environment too. Good day mylotter.

If this is true then this is a very good move and may set an example for other provinces and cities to follow. I don't want to sound pessimistic but, with the mentality and attitude of our local (and also national) officials who are also running for positions would you think they would adopt or implement something that would be a hindrance to their ambitions?

Yes this is true. I saw it in the news earlier that they are removing tarpaulins in their municipality wherein majority is the greetings from the politicians that are making early campaign already. I think that is one of the problem here, if the municipality leader will prohibit this ordinance too, that is a good move and I think more points for them. I just hope that many places will also adopt this ordinance.

In the name of the environment, well that may be good but since it will be implemented on certain provinces and municipality it may still be practiced somewhere else. I think what will happen will be that it will increase the use of papers which is neither good nor bad at all since these would mean increase for demand for wood to create paper which means logging could trigger thing up because of the demand.

I think there are other options like those used in banners before, the "katsa" or cloth where they manually paint it. I think this will also lessen those epal because I know making such banner if not easy.

another reason why we should really implement the anti-epal bill all around the country with stricter sanctions. Tarpaulins make good temporary shelters especially for our natural calamity stricken countrymen, just don't forget to remove those faces in them

I really don't know if this is the reason for implementing the said ordinance. Given the possibility that the current mayor of that town is also pposting such tarpaulins. On the other hand, that is a good move for the leaders.

Yes I've also seen this news. I'm glad that the LGU has this move so that other LGUs will follow the good example. As a servant leaders they must be the one to show good example.

I agree with you. The leader of this municipality is not afraid to loose his way of campaigning strategy thru the tarpaulins. Maybe he/she realized that his municipality looks messy with the tarpaulins around.

Well, if tarpaulins will be banned, these politicians will surely find ways to equal such means of promoting their campaign for the post they aim. There are numerous replacements for tarpaulins so our only consolation is the thought that production of this plastic product will lessen.

Absolutely, I just saw another material used by a candidate here. They are using papers and posting it in posts and walls whenever possible. This too makes the place looks messy.

Nice idea but I am not against the use of plastic, I want disciplined to be fully implemented many people are ignorant of their responsibilities. Prohibiting tarpaulin's if it will be used for premature election campaign is good but for reason that the used of plastic is prohibited and to help save environment is not good it is a plastic moved by itself. Every household today all throughout the world are using plastic at home. The only different is how it was used. The main problem is proper disposal of waste materials whatever they are and together punishment for those who violated. People always embrace the easiest way instead of doing what is right as A HUMAN. Look for any environmentalist and ask them if ever they have ever planted a tree on their own freewill.

I like your point. I agree with you that plastics are not harmful as long as it is used properly. Reusing or cleaning plastic bags and using it again is not the thing that done by many. Tarpaulin banning just because of the environment for me is not the main purpose of the said ordinance but it has something to do with the political issues.

That's politics for you. I suggest we don't vote for those candidates who are guilty of premature campaign. But then again, there wouldn't be anyone left to vote for since almost all of the candidates are guilty of this. Sigh, what some people would do in the name of power and money. I'd bet they would even sell their souls in exchange for these earthly treasures.

I believe in your point. Nowadays, elections has been manipulated by money and power. We can always see same faces in running for the election. I agree with you, if we do not vote for those candidates, nothing will remained.

I saw that town prohibiting tarpaulins in the news. I think that is a good move. Even if premature campaigning is prohibited, the politicians will always make a way of going around the law. Good move by the environmentalists. Tarpaulins are harmful to the environment. Have a nice day!

Yes, they can be easily got a reason for that and claim that it is not part of their campaign since they are just greeting fiestas and holidays, like here in our place. SOme are promoting their communty service with their faces on it. Here in our place that plastics will be banned, I hope they will also adopt the said ordinance.

Well, you know how our politicians are. Even if they are fully aware of the do's and dont's , still their campaign advisers and managers can affect their decision. And not unless that those posters or tarpaulin are torn down will it be stopped.

Exactly, they know what are prohibited and not and still they do what are prohibited. What is questionable in these politicians are they are keep on posting such tarpaulins just now that the election is coming. Why don't they post such right after the election?
