How much food do we need to live

I am sure many of us know people who have been on crazy diets and got seriously ill because of it. If we don't know them personally we heard about them on the news. So how much food do we need to survive? Surviving means barely living, so beware of what I say. According to the site http://www.myfoodstorage.com/mfs/how-many-calories-do-you-need-to-survive/ You need 600-1000 calories to survive, but if you are exercising like crazy like gifts does you need more than the 6,000. exercising burns off calories so make sure you don't only eat 600 calories and then work out like crazy. Also simply digesting the food burns about 3 to 4 calories. You also need calories when you sleep because your body still burns calories but at a lower rate. any thoughts?

I agree. Although, Gifts isn't on any special diet. She just can't physically get the food in her stomach. Her stomach was supposed to have stretched over time like mine did but hers didn't. She is losing her hair so in pretty sure she doesn't even get 600 calories a day. Prolonged intake of 600 calories a day will eventually cause the body to eat itself in a matter of speaking. 600 calories a day puts us into a state of ketoacidosis. That changes our metabolism catabolism, I think it's called. Anyway, just think Karen Carpenter starving herself until her heart gave out. I sometimes eat about 700 calories a day but I don't stay in that way of eating.

absolutely, gifts has now become anorexic, her stomach needs to stretch so she can eat properly, but I think junk food is what is filling her up and defeating the purpose.

Gifts goes to the point of near starvation and that is scary. Her hair falling out is a clear sign that she is not eating right. I think that for the most part, from what she says, she seems to eat healthy stuff. Maybe just not enough of it?? I try to eat healthy and if I forget to bring something into work to eat, I might buy an orange and eat it to get by till the next day. It's not much of a dinner but we don't have much healthy to eat where I work. I don't do it every day or often. I'm small. I just don't eat chips, candy, sodas & fast foods hardly ever. I will eat them on occasion but most of what i put in my body is pretty healthy. IF I indulge in a pizza or a burger, it isn't going to hurt because I almost never do it. If I eat a candy bar...I'll still be ok because it is so rare. I cook at home and try to eat healthy without counting calories. I eat small portions and well, it just works for me. I really think the key is to just eat small portions of healthy things and don't kick yourself for eating an occassional burger or pizza here and there.

She is trying to eat healthier now. I got her off all that sugar she was drinking. Her stomach is the size of an egg. It hasn't stretched to accommodate 4 to 6 ounces like mine has. She is trying to do right. She will get into real trouble if she can't get some adequate nutrition into her. I suggested Boost or Ensure at least once a day to give her some food energy. She can't eat meat. It sticks in her throat. I may also suggest making baby food from the meat, so she can mechanically get the food out of her throat.

I should actually sit down and count my calories. I actually lost 15 pounds without even trying and my doctor suddenly cares. I can't sleep without having a complete full stomach, I was like this while on nights.

Yes if you are losing weight without trying it isn't a good sign

After 2 colonoscopys, a flex scope, ultrasound nothing. I am not complaining of the weight loss, I never noticed it.

It goes beyond the calories. You do need nutrients and vitamins. Chips and things are empty calories. I was under weight most of my life so I dealt with this from the opposite angle as Gifts does. Excersise was important and calories are important. When I worked out I did need more calories or I just lost more weight. I had a list of foods that were good for the body but also higher in calorie content. Gifts actually needs a list of foods that are good for the body but in lower calorie content or maybe just smaller portions. Also changing up the menu helps, I think. Someone mentioned water and that is so true. It is important. Iced water actually boosts the metabolism and does help with burning calories as well as flushing the system. Gifts is a concern because she tends to go to extremes with the dieting and to the point of near starving. Many small portions are good since she is exercising. I saw her discussion where she does not want to eat at all until she loses and that is just scary. She is going to get sick.

of course but I am trying to show her she is on the route of becoming very sick or die. I have told her plenty of times she needs a dietician to create a diet specific for her special needs. The food is one thing, she is starving herself but that intensive work out by Sean T is extremely hard, they call it extreme pain or something like that and that is what she is doing, then wondering why she is in so much pain.

She has a nutritionist now who is working with her. It's still going to be a huge challenge because she can't HOLD than two bites of food. It will be another hour or two before she can take another bite. She has had lots if trouble eating since the surgery. She used to just drink her calories in sugar. We got her doing better in that regard, but she needs to work at trying to stretch her stomach a bit. This could take 3 years to do. It took me about 18 months but I had an easier time of it.

Ok then maybe she should not be doing such an extreme workout. I did not realize the workout routine she was doing. A good nutritionist would be balancing her work out with her nutrition.

I don't personally know anyone that has gotten ill because of the diets that they've been on. With that said, I do know that the culture here seems to think that more is better, but in all honesty, we don't need to have nearly as much food as we are eating on a daily basis. For me, I have to admit that I really don't eat all that much, but I am surviving and in fact I've been able to do something that is really important to me and that is that I'm actually losing some of the extra pounds that I have on my body.

Do you know that it requires more calories when you sleep than when you watch TV? And using your brain requires a good amount of calories. I guess that is why many people who do not eat right have a hard time thinking clearly. Or at least, if I do not eat right I seem to not think right. I have gone on a crazy diet that was only 850 calories daily, and exercised like crazy and took a prescription diet pill at that same time, all under doctor supervision. Results: well the diet was nutritionally pretty sound, just very restricted. All I ever thought about was "what can I eat" and "when can I eat". I lost a lot of weight, pretty quickly, but was very toned at the same time, so that was good, but I think it messed up my brain chemistry at that time, because no matter how much I lost, I wanted to lose more. I also think it has messed up my metabolism, because now I cannot seem to lose much weight at all. As soon as I went off the diet, and off the diet pills, I began to gain back, and I weigh even more now than I ever did. On the other hand, I am stronger and probably healthier now.

if you are concerned, and losing muscle is something to be concerned about ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist who can help plan a diet just for you.

I try to get through to people also that they need to drink alot of water to help flush out toxins and the rest. It also helps keep you from becoming dehydrated. ANd dehydration is scarey because it can take you over rather quickly.

I had no ideas about the going rate for survival in calories. I see we don't need much to survive if we're not very active. I am probably over eating in that reguard then because I am hardly ever active. Though I am not over weight by much.. I could use some trimming down.. Those who have really active life styles will need to eat more consistently just keeping their energy up for that!

no no no, that is all we need to survive but it is not healthy and evenually we will get sick, a healthy diet is like 1500 calories a day.
13 Feb 13
give space in yourstomach 1/3 for air, 1/3 for water and 1/3 for yourfood. believe it be very healthy for you
