Strewth! Freecycle is working out rather well for you, eh? You're quite a methodical bugger too! Were you a book-keeper once? And all of this only recently too? I've been a member of a few local groups for... ever since it started, I think. I've also been to many council hard waste collections too. All for free! So... do you acquire most of this stuff by searching for it or by asking for it? Would you consider your freecycle community to be quite large in comparison to others? Do you have to travel far to collect these items & hire large trailers or vehicles to take them home? Our community is quite small in numbers here & is very spread out. Many times I've had to travel over a hundred kilometers to collect things. I could probably compile a similar list to yours. However, it looks like you're more into asset-building whereas most of what I've obtained has been sold for cash, in one form or another - or saves cash. I hope you've found the space to store all of this! I could maybe add to your list things like computers (lots & lots & lots of them!), TV sets - both old & new, printers, photocopiers, scanners, some industrial equipment, fruits of every variety when in season & picked fresh from the tree, hand tools, power tools, building materials, gardening tools & pot plants, tickets, a bar fridge, garden shed & more! But that's just for me. I've also got plenty of stuff for work as well, saving them money there too.

The population density causes a lot of problems but it does mean I rarely travel more than 15 miles (24 k) and most is a very close. There's about 5000 members in our local group and 5 more groups nearby. Most of this stuff I use, the furniture is in my house, even my four poster king size bed is freecycle collected from just 5 miles (8 k) away. Selling stuff from freecycle is frowned on here, though I do sell found and blaged stuff. all the best, urban

That's a big group! So, do you post "wanted" posts to get most of the stuff or do you just respond to "offer" posts? Yes, on-selling is also not permitted here without the previous owner's permission. However, I have often, in the past, reduced items to sorted scrap metal & sold them for cash if I couldn't use them for my intended purpose or they weren't working & repair was uneconomical.

I rarely post wanted adds and as a moderator on the freecycle board we don't allow wanted requests that seem out of the spirit of the group or it would be flooded with wanted car, etc. Actually here we are freegle not freecycle, the American originators of freecycle started to appoint there own people as moderators on local UK groups and interfering how they were run so we had to break away all the best, urban

I need a new metal roof. How would I go about getting that free?

There is no set way, it is just a way of keeping your eyes open, freecycle, local tip, look in skips? Scrap-yards often have metal roofing and farmers sometimes have same all the best, urban

I'm not sure I could come up with a list like that, but I do get quite a bit of stuff free. Today, my nephew came by and brought a big sack of t.p. He works in a place where they have to replace it if it's more than half way used, so he keeps the rolls and gives them away. My ironing board was given to me, so was.... two big leaf bags full of yarn, clothes of various kinds, baskets, shovels, fish, vegetables and so on. You've done well!

Cool! I am not aware that there are places or people who just give away things. That is a lot of savings. I wish I could find some near my place. For now, I just recycle used bottles, plastics, cans, boxes and papers. I don't sell them but I give them to people who can sell them. I'll check in my place if we have the same.

Wow, that is pretty amazing, I am just amazed by all that you got. It is amazing what people are willing to give away just to get rid of. We got part of our swing set that way, but that is about it. We also got a free free standing popcorn machine you know with the big viewing area and its own stand, but we got that through facebook, some girl my husband went to high school with said on facebook that they wanted to get rid of it and if anybody wanted it to come and get it. So my husband did. It is kind of hard to store so I understand why they wanted to get rid of it but it is great for parties and when we have people over for cards. We share it with my neighbor across the street and they use it more than we do so they store it. We just go get it when we want to use it, so I guess we sort of gave it to them.

Wow, what a list, nice going! Mine would be a computer, coffee table, aquarium, floor lamp but there is probably more I can't think of right now. Recycling occurs right near me as people in the housing complex I live in put things they don't want in a specific area to be picked up or recycled. If anyone wants something they just salvage or there are a few guys that drive by with their pickup trucks.
