Have you read Banished?

I'm reading Banished - Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church. I've not finis mashed it yet, but I'm appalled at the mind control in that church. They picket places and the signs say God hates you and God hates F*gs and all that stuff. They believe only the people baptized into that church are going to heaven. According to that church doctrine it is a sin to argue. If kids gmher their parents argue they are supposed to report them. If a kid breaks any code of conduct, like talking to a person who isn't in their group they get reported. Three times of getting reported can get you kicked out. I would say this is a cult but you might think otherwise. I did not put this into religion because it goes beyond religion. I believe it is a communal way of life in a controlled environment. Everyone spies on everyone else. Have you ever experienced anything remotely like this? I have in a very small way. I wasn't allowed to cut my hair. (They can't either in this church). I couldn't wear shorts or pants. Had to wear only skirts or dresses and everything had to be very modest. If you have some thoughts on this please share.

Hi PQ, Is this a true story? It sounds very interesting. I'm almost done with the 50 Shades of Grey series and will be looking for something else to read soon. It definitly sounds like a cult. At the local family planning center here, there tends to be tons of these kinds of people picketing with some really hateful signs regarding abortion. Most of them refer to sinning and going against God and going to Hel so I am guessing it is some sort of religious group. Maybe not. The thing is that this particular family planning place does not do abortions. They offered birth control based on income as well as STD testing and paps smears etc. They also did not pay for abortions.

I'll be heading to the library as soon as I'm done with this set. Thanks for this. I am always looking for something good to read. I love recommendations or I end up picking up several books at the library that look good but they are not always as good as they appear.

I lived Fifty Shades. I haven't finished the Freed one yet. Yes it's a memoir of the true story of Lauren Drain's life in the church. You won't be able to put that book down. I finished it in 3 days.

One thing I remember about this church was a demonstration outside a clinic and one of the banners read: AiD-Solution not the problem. I just thought that was so hideous. It is like cults I have heard about. They have a show on BIO I think that is about Cults and the first show was about one that sounds like this. It goes WAY beyond religion. I remember once when I worked for the telephone company. There was a little park right across the street from the building where I worked. One evening I was waiting in the park for my ride and a van stopped and a young woman and little boy got out. The van drove on around the block. The woman came toward smiling and friendly. She said hello and starting in talking about this group she was apart of and would like me to come to a meeting. I said I might. She kept in like really trying to get me interested. She had some name for it but I don't recall it now. My ride came and the van came back and parked close by. It was a weird occurrence. She seemed so overly friendly and trying to get me to go to this meeting. I started talking to my friends and one knew of the group. It was a sect of the Moon cult. I am so glad I didn't go with her to that meeting. And I really think that the others in the van may have kidnapped me if my ride hadn't come right when she did. Really weird. Hadn't thought of that in a long time. That was back in the late 70's.

She made me feel sort of weird cause she was being so over friendly. I was very lucky my ride came when it did. Not sure what they had planned. I would feel bad for Lauren too. These people that get involved in these cults must really have some strange experiences. This cult show that is on had one cult that a lady was leader of and she had dental equipment and if the kids were obedient she would drill their teeth. Ugh! I have such a adversity about dentists I would die of fright. I do hope that Lauren does hear from her family at some point. So it just leaves you hanging there and you don't know if they do or not?

Wow! Celticeagle, I think something bad might have happened if your ride hadn't come along. I feel so bad for Lauren not ever seeing her little sisters and brother. One sister is a woman now. She spoke to them in the last pages if the book telling them that she lives them and if they ever leave that church and want to see her she would love to see them. She knows she probably will never see them.

I have not read this book and I don't think it is available in my country. It sounds like another religious extremist groups which would use religion codes to control their followers. I never understand how humans can become that weak to be manipulated en-mass and do deeds which are very questionable.

It's a memoir. It is an extremist group of about 80 members. Most of them are blood family. They believe the end of the world will be any day and they are the only ones going to heaven.

This is a cult in my opinion. I can't believe how people can get caught up in such a so call religion as this one. It is so painful to hear of the way they live their lives. People spying on each other and having certain rules and regulations to abide by. I feel people who get involved in such nonsence are weak minded people with no direction in life. I feel for the kids because they don't know better. They live with this abuse on a daily basis, it make me want to cry.

Dear PQ it sounds like an interesting book, never heard of it so far so thanks from this old bookworm here for bringing it to my attention. Yes I know there are some churches which are a bit extreme, with rules like women are not to pray loud in church, cover their hair, not wear jeans or trousers in general, etc etc and i have always kept a good distance to these.

I hope you can get this if you would like it. It's sad, it gets you mad and it makes you cry at how your mom and dad and siblings and friends all abandon you. It ended triumphantly for her, but it's still sad.

Majority of the churches and religions brain wahs you. I was born into a catholic family, my grandparents use to go all the time, and we were forced to go. I stopped going as the things they would say or try to convince you. It's all a way to control people, and all lies.

I believe in god but I agree that many churches have their own wild beliefs and expect you to embrace them. I used to belong to one where women couldn't wear slacks or short sleeves. We had to wear long skirts and dresses. We had to give 10% of our earnings to the church. They wanted to know your income and demanded that 10% of all your earnings went to them.

I wouldn't last long in a churh like that. The one we went to locally, they were nuts, and expected money as money, but not a set amount. My Grandparents use to give us a few dollars to put in, I can see as it keeps the church up and running and the bills. But many religions, bash other religions, and brain wash.

That's true, but they are educated wackos. There are a bunch of lawyers in the 'family'. They are smart enough to win law suits put against them. It's really too bad that children become victims of such craziness.

I agree. And there are plenty of churches that are 'out there' maybe not as militant as they are but I've been a member of one or two that I think we're cultish when I think back on it.
