Is Your City Listed?

On your profile, after you choose state you can choose your town. But, can you? I can't. My town is not listed. None of the towns near me are listed. But, teeny tiny towns that most people have not heard of are listed. Not that Iowa is full of huge towns. Quite the opposite. But 2000 people is bigger than 200 people. So, I just find that weird.

I have not checked but even if my city was listed I would not enable it. @myLotBugs could perhaps check on this.

I don't know that I would either. I did wonder how they picked which towns to include and which ones not.

What is the name of the city that is missing?

@Gwensmom We got the database of cities from a 3rd party. I can see what you're saying. It's missing a lot of cities from Iowa. Anyway, it was pretty easily to manually add cities, so I added both Monroe and Prairie City. You should be able to add those to specify those in your profile now, if you'd like.

I live outside Monroe and that is not on there. Prairie City is close and that is not on the list either. I could understand if it went by population, but some towns on the list are smaller. There are many other towns that aren't there.

I just checked and yeah mine is on the list. I think that's actually pretty cool because just a few years ago we weren't even on the map, just one of those small towns no one has ever heard of.

Isn't it amazing how times change? I grew up in a town that had a private lake right by it and noone knew the town, but if you mentioned the lake everyone knew where that was. Now, people actually know the town and don't know the lake.

That's a good thing if you ever want to list it.

Mine is listed either. I'm kinda glad it is not though. Maybe it will get better.

MyLot does say the site is still in progress. Maybe that list is part of it.

I may live near a city, but I don't live in one so it is hard for me to list my city as I don't live in one!I

I don't know where they got the lists from (and I'm pretty sure that MyLot didn't compile it themselves) but there are certainly some oddities and some glaring omissions! Fortunately, my city is listed, so I was able to add it but I notice that many don't. It seems that you can, at least, select your State and then leave the town blank. I find it useful to see where people are from, mainly so that I know what time zone they live in. It's also useful if they talk about something which may be local to them and can help when trying to give an informed response! It's not a great deal of use advising someone that they might find what they are looking for at Tesco or Waitrose if they don't live in the UK! BTW, I found it rather confusing to see a town called Wyoming when I had selected Iowa as the state! I had to go and check and, sure 'nuff ... there it is (with just over 500 inhabitants). We'd call that a village here!

Iowa also has a town called Washington, but I don't believe that is listed. Government uses town and city interchangably around here. Village never gets used. I never thought about listing the state for a time zone reference. That does make sense.

I rarely ever list my hometown. I have the United States listed on mine and have not even checked to see if my town is included.

I also have United States. I do understand Owlwings stating that at least putting in the state might help for time zone. I have never been very good at knowing my time zones outside the US so I don't know how helpful it would be for me.

Yes. I found my city. It does make sense that larger cities should be listed.

Maybe more towns will be added later on. Who knows? Glad you found your city.
