Kids making up stories

I was too tired and sick to tell a bedtime story to my children last night, so my 6 year old son said he'd tell a story. At first, I suggested him to tell "Alice in the wonderland", the story I have been telling these few nights. He said, he wanted to tell another story, he'd make up a story. He talked softly to himself for quite some time, and told me he has planned out how to tell the story. The little sister went downstairs to eat something when my son was planning to story. Then when my little girl came upstairs, my son started to tell the story to her. After my son telling the story, my 3 year old girl also wanted to tell a story. She made up a story with a cat and a dog. It was so much fun listening to these two young kids telling stories to each other. I like how creative and adorable they are. When my son is older, I'd suggest him to write down the stories he made up. Do you like to make up stories for your kids? Do your kids like to simply make up any stories?

It's great that they could use their imagination to entertain one another with their stories. You should record it. They will love to see it when they are grown.

That is a great idea! I should get out the recorder for my daughter so I can play it back to her in the future. I agree that it is great for their imaginations as well.

I wish I could do that, I was just too tired to get up as I got headache last night. They always do that - making up stories and telling to each other. I guess it's because I always make up stories for them too, and they imitate.

@dashboardc33 I used to do that more often to my elder son when he was young. I do not do that as often now. But it's really fun to play back to videos or audios we captured. The kids are always so adorable.

Very cute! My daughter likes to make off shoots of existing stories - and her stories can get lengthy. But it's my little son who likes to make up stories of his own - but they tend to be rather short! It'd be cute to video the kids so they can see and hear their stories down the line!

I can imagine your daughter's lengthy stories.... my son likes to tell long stories as well. Yes, I'd like to video the kids, but I do not always video shoot or voice record them as whenever I tried to do that, they stopped doing or talking. They either were interested in my camera/tablet or they just stopped. Sometimes they don't like photo shooting at all, so I just keep quiet and enjoy the moment.

@much2say Yes, I get what you mean. My 3yo girl always doesn't like photo shooting, but lately sometimes she will ask us to take a photo of her, then she wants to take a look at the photo herself. Perhaps she enjoys looking at her own photos. Sometimes I'd prefer to enjoy the moment too, though I'd really love to keep them in record.

@kaka135 You may find that as they get older, then they won't want you to stop recording them - they will want to go on and on and on til all your memory/tape runs out - ha ha! Yes, I like to enjoy the moment too - the memories will be in our heads!

I have never known kids to be doing that. But if they do, sometimes the allegations are serious. Sometimes, they want to say something and are not able to express it because they lack the vocabulary or unable to co-ordinate the feelings with expressions. If a child ever tried to tell me a story, I would listen to it seriously indeed, and try to check whether there was something that he or she wanted to convey. But in the case you have mentioned, it is just aping mama. lol

When I read your response, I think you may have misunderstood my meaning of "making up story", or if I have used the words wrongly. It's actually my children created their own stories to tell each other, just as how I tell them stories (not from any books, but just I simply made them up). They like listening to stories, and they like to create their own stories to tell others as well. I also always listen to their story to find out if they implicate something, but those stories are always just happy stories and things we have experienced in our life or related to the stories I have just told them. Thanks for your comment.

My daughter makes up the most hilarious stories that are so funny just because they don't make any sense.

Yes, I think "making sense" is not concerned in their world at all. They just like to have them in the way they want to be.

Actually they always did that. Sometimes they just talk to themselves, sometimes they use props to do that, sometimes they make up stories when playing with blocks or any toys. They always tell stories to each other too. I think my little girl learned this from my elder son, as now she always does that.
