Star Trek

We've been watching the original series from the 60s on Netflix. And even though the special effects aren't very sophisticated and some of the concepts are idealistic and silly, it's still a great series for other reasons. If you can look past the fact that the female crew members wore the shortest dresses in the galaxy and had hairstyles piled so high they defied gravity, you can start to appreciate the fact that there were women crew members. This was 1966 and women were in space, at least on television. In fact, one woman crew member was in charge of communications and was stationed on the bridge with the commanding crew members. If you can look past the rather childish treatment of such issues as war and the human condition, you will see that these were an attempt to explore and define what it means to be human. The comparisons and contrasts with other alien civilizations only brought humanity into sharper focus. The need for freedom, individualism and self-determination were often strange concepts to the aliens they encountered. But every time the human travelers were tested, these traits only grew stronger. Spock is perhaps the best example of what they were trying to accomplish. Spock as half human and half Vulcan tries to live his life completely logically, but his human side cannot help sometimes allowing his emotions to cloud his decisions. The series is better than it appears. It's clumsy at times, aliens are unconvincing actors in Halloween costumes and there's way too much emphasis on Kirk's dating life, but overall, Star Trek was a brave attempt at self-examination. Have you seen the original Star Trek series? Are you a fan?

The original series of Star Trek is currently being shown on British television. There is a mixture of poor and good stories, but it is still worth watching It seems amazing that I watched these same episodes the first time around, yet they seemed so realistic at the time.

I think it was the characters more than the special effects that drove Star Trek. It does look clownish now, but it was pretty sophisticated for its time.

I watched this first time when I was growing up and the telecast one episode every Sunday on the National Channel. Somewhere around 1980s (mid or early late 1980s). When there would be a power cut (we had lots of power cuts those days, but most of Sundays were spared) I would be cursing them for preventing me seeing the Episode. I was more interested because I had a dream to be an astronomer back then and I was all so very excited (or better fascinated) seeing how they would work it out and win each time. I loved Spock the most. More so because of his immunity to emotions. Even much later, I would still keep wondering how good it would be if I could be one without emotions and pure logic. The world can be a better place that way. Quite late, in 2003 I got some CDs of the Star Trek TOS and I still love watching them. The other generations were nothing near it. Agreed, those days the tech and FX were not that great, and maybe that makes me love TOS more. The movies too - they were quite good until the retirement. I have all of them today. And yes, I dont still get the point where I would consider the hairdo, looks or even the fact that there were only a few women in the crew at the helm. In fact, the first episode had a Lady as Number 1. I wonder why did the not have her in future episodes. It would have been good to see Spock Succeed to the #2 position. Wonderful memories are back and I will spend my free time watching some of those episodes starting later tonight Live long and prosper.

The actress who played Number 1 in the pilot is Majel Barrett who went on to play Nurse Chapel in the remainder of the series with a different hair color. She was also involved with the creator of the series, Gene Roddenberry and married him after he and his wife divorced. NBC Executives who had some say in the production would not go for an unknown actress in one of the major roles in the series just because she was Roddenberry's girlfriend and therefore Spock's character was bumped up to a lead role.

There is something special about the original series. And Majel Barret had the secondary role of the voice of the computer and later in The Next Generation, she was Deanna Troi's mother for several seasons.

@SuzieDQ That makes up. Now I understand better. And yes, as the appearance of the Lady #2 was only in three episodes - one - the first episode that is in Black and white and the other two in probably The Menagerie Part I and II, I could not realize that she was the one who played the Nurse Chapel. Thanks for mentioning this too. Next time I watch these episodes, I am going to watch out for this.

I wouldn't say that I am a fan, although I have enjoyed watching some of the episodes.

Even when it is terrible, it's wonderful in some way. It's easy to dismiss older shows that don't have the slick production values we are used to. But there's more to appreciate, even if the show is sometimes very dated.

I have never really tried, but it does not look like my kind of show.

When it works it is brilliant as with clever SF stories like City On The Edge Of Forever or The Trouble With Tribbles but when it gets silly it gets really stupid, as with episodes like Spock's Brain which is so bad it is the stuff of legends. The series turned me into a lifetime SF fan.

Some story lines work better than others. And sometimes, Kirk is just a little too noble. But there are elements that were revolutionary on television back in the 60s, and of course, it led to so many other series based on the original.

I remember this old series. Not all the episodes were good, but in a whole I liked Star Trek.

We have the 40th anniversary remastered set on DVD. The writing went down hill as well as some of the props in the third season due to budget cuts however it remains my favorite of all of the series. The new reboot in my opinion has lost the focus of what the series was all about and that was in trying to solve issues without violence and destruction.

I think the new series is a reflection of the times, just as the original series was a reflection of its time.

I've only seen parts of some episodes of the original series. They had TV reruns when I was a kid. I'm more into the latest movie versions though. I like some of what I've seen from The Next Generation and Enterprise too. Should do a marathon of those shows one day soon. All this Star Wars fever is making me want the next Star Trek movie to come sooner. Ah patience...

Unless you grew up in the 50s and 60s you'd have no clue exactly what Star Trek actually accomplished.

I loved the original Star Trek series and Spock in particular. One day I'd love to watch it again as I far prefer it to the modern sci-fi movies that are full of special effects and extreme violence.
