A different angle on things

Helicopter ride up to the summit of Mount Saint Helens, photo through the floor taken by me

Ever get stuck on something, like totally and utterly stuck. Sometimes what helps is backing up, and then approaching the problem from a different angle. This can be hard because you have been mired in whatever it was for so long, and may need assistance to find the distance you need to get a better idea of another angle to approach from. Fear can also play a factor, fear of losing progress, fear of backsliding...or fear of heights... Which while I still have, I know I can face, I did after all take that very photo riding in a helicopter, and due to the fact I was the smallest, got stuck up front with the plexiglass flooring...so I could see DOWN as we flew around....

I had that experience flying over Grand Canyon. It was a small plane and the flight was a bit turbulent . Looking at the Colorado River beneath and drowning there was what was in my mind at that point in time.

@foxontherails If the plane crashed obviously I would drown there. Right?

I remember flying over the Grand Canyon, too, in a modified plane with giant windows. Bumpy flight - my sister upchucked after we got off the plane, heh. Great views, though - it was totally worth it. Although drowning is not something that I would have in mind while in a plane, I often have a faint fear of possible accidents. I sometimes think that the plane I'm on would suddenly fail and fall towards the unforgiving ground like a brick.

Air turbulence freaks me out, never rode in a plane smaller than like a 12 seater, that's on my bucket list still though. Never seen the grand canyon either, another thing I want to do. Funny that I have been to Japan, and not the Grand Canyon when it is much closer.

Congratulations on facing your fear of heights to ride in the helicopter! I was never in a helicopter, but I did ride in a hot-air balloon three times ... well, two probably don't count as they were at the balloon festival and the balloons were tethered to the ground so they could not go very high. Still, I am afraid of heights, so I am counting them anyway.

@sherryeb I liked the festivals, because you get to see so many different balloons with so many different colors and some even have different shapes. I also actually liked the balloon ride as well, even though I am terrified of heights. I probably wouldn't do it again, but it certainly was worth doing it once.

I enjoyed riding in a hot air balloon, it was about an hour tour over the desert in Casa Grande, AZ. They used to have a hot air balloon festival there every year.

Greetings, Jessa! We eventually get stuck at different things in life. Usually at problems. We just can't see a clear road ahead, we cannot come up with any kind of solution, our mind seem to be working at its most but it cannot have a bright idea. When we get in that situation, the smartest thing to do is take a profound rest and get back at it from a different angle, as you said. Asking a third person for help might also help a lot! hahahaha what an incredible picture! It is so great that you could overcome that fear of yours! I have to admit that I somehow enjoy this kind of fear. I like to put myself in those situations, flying or facing these adrenaline-rushing situations. One more fear you surpassed! Congratulations! Respectfully.

You got what I was trying to say for sure, although I am not sure my adrenaline was rushing in the helicopter. I was trying to focus on how pretty it was, how much I had always wanted to do that, and not the fact I wanted to panic.

Nope. You'd never get me in a helicopter. I will get stuck instead. Stuck on the ground!

Ah, but the view from up there, was pretty amazing. It was fun, but not something I will do again.

I had always wanted too, plus this one took you up so you could see the crater at Mount Saint Helens, which was super cool.

@Jessicalynnt It is a better idea to watch a volcano from a helicopter, I climbed on Mount Vesuvius in Italy, it smelled of sulfur, smoke came out from the center, the ground was hot, pretty scary.

@LadyDuck I think if we had planned better, the guys would have insisted we walk up there, and granted it would have been fun. Helens has been quiet for quite awhile, and never as scary as Vesuvius. That one I would love to visit.

I had heard and read in some text around that the best way to overcome fear is to face it. And it seems you just proved that thing You had an incentive - the crater at Mount Saint Helens to keep you interested. Would you still have attempted it if there was none ?

I remember the first time I went to the Grand Canyon, I wrapped my arms around a tree and held on tightly to look down into the canyon,so as not to fall over the edge. I used to be afraid of heights, but now not so much, I climbed a mountain and repelled down on a rope, that kind of cured me.

I honestly don't think I could do that. Good for you!

I froze climbing the mountain, too afraid to go back down, fortunately, the people I was with were very skilled and encouraged me to follow through@Jessicalynnt
