I Miss My Lipstick Plant

When we lived in Vegas, my brother bought me a lipstick plant. I had never heard of it before. It was small and kind of frail looking. We were told that it went into shock easily and that we had to make sure and keep it in one place and not move it around a lot. We babied this plant for over a year and it grew so much that it hung to the floor. It bloomed several times that year and as you can see in the picture, the blooms do look like a tube of lipstick. I was very sad to have to leave it when we moved back to Tennessee. Since it was so temperamental, I was afraid to travel two days with it in the car. I gave it to a good friend before we left. I have looked and haven't been able to find another one yet. I am hoping that maybe one of the nurseries will have one next spring.

Wow never heard of it before. The fact that you cannot find another one clearly suggests its a rare plant. Looks kind of eerily sweet

@Marcyaz I'm not sure if it is rare or just not sold a lot where we live.

I guess you did the right thing.. The plant looks pretty. How do you propagate it.. If it was from a cutting you could have taken a piece of a stem and brought it with you in a jar of water and cotton swabs. I usually do that.

@Marcyaz I hated having to do so but I didn't want them to die on us.

I never thought of doing that. As temperamental as it was, I wonder if it would have made it?

I didn't know that there is a lipstick plant. I thought you are talking literally about lipstick when I read the title.

I've never seen a lipstick plant before, it looks nice. Maybe you can ask your friend to send you some seeds and plant one at your current home.

@simone10 I hope you will find another plant like this soon. Maybe it's easier to find in spring time, this could be the peak season of the lipstick plant.

I wouldn't want to grow it from a seed as it can be hard to grow. I wan to find one that is established a little.

I must admit I don't think that I have seen this kind of plant before, it is easy to see why it got its name. I hope that you find one to replace this one :D

I hope I do too. It takes a while for it to establish and start growing but once it does, it takes off.

@simone10 I had never heard of this and got curious. Guess what? If you put in search lipstick plant where to buy there are many site from which you can purchase one. Just don't know how they deliver if they are so fragile.

It's very interesting. But I am sure that any plant that needed good care would die in my house. I hope you can find another.

That is so cool..Just when I thought I have heard of every kind of plants, someone mentions a new one. I could never have a plant like this, not with my schedule, it would die too easily on me.

It is a very pretty plant. It is a hanging plant so when it's not in bloom, it just looks like any kind of green plant.
