Would you get a dog from a pet rescue org? I would, because many times they are well cared for...and they can tell you a bit about the dog in question. Sometimes they are even micro chipped, and often have shots.

Yup! I have two dogs and they are both from the same rescue. Contrary to what some believe, though, it is not "cheap" to acquire a pet from a rescue. They are not free. Some folks think they should be... but they are forgetting that the rescue has to feed, house and care for all the animals until they can be homed. My dogs came to me fully vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, well-fed and loved... and that was worth everything to me :) They couldn't tell me much about my first dog because he was found abandoned and running the streets, as a pup, totally scared. They had to guess at his age and I don't know his background... but I love him now with all my heart. My second was a surrender -- a family gave her up because she barked too much in their apartment and (believe it or not) licked their faces too much Because I had already adopted the same breed from them, the rescue called me to inquire if I might want to give her a home. I took one look at the photo they sent me and fell in love with her too! I fully support this rescue to the best of my ability and highly recommend them to others that I know are looking to adopt.
