Hand Foot and Mouth

My little man has had Hand Foot and Mouth disease for the last few weeks. Our Nanny's two little babies had it and we thought Vinnie had gotten away with it because it had been about two weeks and nothing showed up, he had a bit of a sniffle but that was all. Then about 3 weeks after they had the blisters etc he had a terrible nappy rash, all tiny little red blotches all around his bum and the tops of his thighs. Then the next day I noticed a few little dots on his hands and feet and one on his face. He was like this for a few days again and was totally fine with it just a bit spotty. About a week after that he went down hill massively, he had blisters all over his mouth and his bum was sooo sore we were plastering him with sudocrem which did help but some of the blisters had burst as looked really painful. He didn't make a fuss about it though, the first day he was really bad I rang the nursery to say he wouldn't be in and why. To my surprise they said that he could come in even with Hand Foot and Mouth, I think their reasoning is that by time the blisters and everything show up they would have been carrying it for a while and they are already on the mend. I didn't take him that day (Thursday) and he wasn't due back in until Monday. He seemed fine in himself a little bit grumpy at time and he would occasionally let out a little cry unexpectedly but over all he was ok. The only problem was getting him to eat or drink anything. By this point he had blisters inside his mouth and he wouldn't even have his dummy. Normally when he is poorly he loves his dummy. He wouldn't put a bottle in his mouth and would hardly eat. The only thing I could get him to eat were yogurts. He basically lived on them for a week. That was 2 weeks ago and he is much better now but has a lingering cough which is starting to concern me a little bit it sounds like it might be on his chest a bit. I am hoping it clears soon or we may need a trip to the doctors. I feel so sorry for the little man he has been so brave but has pretty much been poorly for 6 weeks solid now. I have posted a picture taken a few days ago but he had hardly any spots left then. He took the picture himself as well so it's not great. What do you think about letting babies go to nursery when they are poorly ? Have any of you had experience with hand foot and mouth ?

I've never heard of it before. It sounds like measles. And that can be bad so i probably would have run to the doctor for help. I'm glad he's feeling better.

I did ring the doctor to check, it was known to be going around so he wasn't to concerned, he said to only worry if it started affecting his breathing, if the blisters get to bad in his mouth and nose. Luckily that never happened. It's the first time he's been really poorly, it was horrible to see, and he's too little to explain what's going on bless him x

@AthenaD This is a good comparison, I believe Measles is more dangerous as well. Hand foot and mouth is horrible and not very pleasant but not usually dangerous except in very little babies. Which is why I couldn't visit my sister when you had her baby x

My only experience with it was a co worker in a preschool who caught it in a room with a sensory table. filled with water. I guess the nursery felt that he had already exposed everyone. However, if he felt bad his place was home with you.

Yeah I think that was probably their reasoning. He went in the next Monday for the whole week and they said he was fine, didn't have any problem taking him as he was happy enough. I'm so glad he is on the mend now though x

I hope your little man get well soon. Make sure to do something special for him since he has been so brave :) My son had hand foot and mouth when he was younger. We had a visitor in the house before he got sick and our guess is he was the one who had the virus and infected our son. We brought our son to his pediatrician because he got a fever too. That's when we learned about this virus. He had a hard time eating since his throat was also sore. We gave him soup and oatmeal cause he can swallow those easier. Good thing he still tried to eat even if it hurts. It took five days before he got well.

I have never seen a case of hand, foot and mouth. It sounds terrible. But then so many things kids get and spread around at daycare are so uncomfortable.

It seems like most people haven't heard of it and too be honest I hadn't heard of it until I had a baby and read an article about common baby illnesses. It was nasty but he's much better now x

I have never heard of this illness. No, people should keep their children home when they are sick

I never even knew that was a real disease. Unfortunately kids pick up all sorts of nasty things at the babysitter's. Mine didn't go when they were babies as I stayed home with them. They do go now, and thankfully they've always been well enough to go. If they had to miss school one of us would have to stay off work that day as we don't have a sitter during the day, only for after school.

@shellyjaneo Yes it is, especially if she's lax enough to allow children showing signs of diseases to come to daycare. Does she have her own children there as well?

I was quite lucky my partner was a stay at home dad for the first year then I stayed home with him for a few months but he is 17 months now and has been going to a childminder / nursery for 2 months. I'm hoping he doesn't start picking up loads of bugs but I think it's inevitable x

@katsmeow1213 No my childminders children don't go their but she had Vinnie home with her children when he was ill but it was them that he caught it off so it doesn't say much x

Oh goodness, poor little guy! None of my kids had it but I have seen it in other children before. I used to run an In Home Daycare and if any of the children were sick they were not allowed to come in. I did not want the whole place getting whatever they had. I tried to keep germs at a minimum whenever possible.

Yeah that is the general rule but the nursery seems really relaxed which was obviously great for me last week as I could go to work but not so great if he's going to be picking up bugs all the time. We'll have to see how it goes. If he keeps getting ill then I may have to rethink nursery's but he absolutely loves it there x
