More Tales of Village Life - the 'recycling' shop

One of the most amazing things that our local county council has set up in recent years is a set of so-called 'Reuse' shops. We are lucky to have one of these shops in our village and it's a little gem. The Reuse shops take in stuff that people don't want any more but don't want to just throw away to landfill. There are collection points at the local 'dump' (or 'Waste Recycling Centre' to give it the formal name) where people can leave unwanted items that are too good to destroy. Alternatively, when we have stuff that's good but not wanted, we pop round and give it to the shop. The prices charged are mind-blowingly low. We've had several toasters and small electrical items and this morning I 'invested' £3 (what's that? $4.50?) in a Nespresso coffee maker. My husband pops in regularly to buy water butts and compost bins for the garden, each for a few pounds. For young couples starting out with their first homes, it's a great way to get very inexpensive items. The shop is a great example of a 'win-win' situation. The County Council don't have to pay for landfill for these items, the store manager gets a job, the community get bargain deals on items they might not otherwise be able to afford, and whatever doesn't sell locally - such as old CRT Television sets and defunct old laptops - gets shipped to Africa. The Reuse shop is also another place where our cat, Baloo, likes to hang out. The manager gave him his own chair just inside the door so he could watch the customers. He claims that Baloo follows people around the store to make sure they don't steal things. I like to think he's the unofficial 'assistant manager' of the shop. We suspect his ulterior motive is that the Reuse is next door to the pet shop. He's probably planning to tunnel through and eat the chickens and rabbits next door.

That is a great idea. I wish there was a place like that close to where we lived.

I think every town should have a place like that! We have a website that people can post their unwanted items to, but it's not always easy to follow. People mostly post stuff they're looking for instead of stuff they're offering, and it becomes annoying at times. People posting that they're looking for a car or a boat. See the #1 rule of this site is that you can't SELL items on the site, it all must be free. So why would any moron go looking for a FREE car or boat? Even a car or boat that doesn't run and needs work can get a few hundred dollars for it. I'd much rather have an actual shop to stop and browse the items they have. You never know what you might find.

It would be great, wouldn't it if more of these places existed?

@boiboing It really would. So much stuff gets thrown out that doesn't need to be. I think some people forget that there are others who can use things even if you have no use for it anymore. I try to never throw things away that might still have life left in it. We can donate such things to the Goodwill shops, which is guess is basically the same.

The odd thing is that we pay rates to a different local authority than the one that set up the scheme. Our rating authority is one which set up a waste recycling scheme that became a benchmark for the country and has been repeated elsewhere. We are in a hotbed of recycling innovation.

I see these Tales From The Village, and think, yay! Always funny. I just giggled, picturing Baloo in "His Chair", plotting chicken massacres

He has his eye on Lola the giant rabbit from the pet shop but she's easily his match. Maybe the next Tale from the village might be about Lola and her boyfriend Jeffery.

Thrift shops are very popular here and similar. People who sell on eBay often shop these to find inventory.

We have a lot of 'junk shops' here too - well not so many as in the past. The difference with this model is that everything is so cheap because all the stock is gained for free.

I have given things away on Craiglist because they were still good and would cost too much to throw away. I like the idea of the shop. Much better than going through Craigslist or Upcycle. Sometimes I can leave out things that work for the many charities that send trucks to get them. But it's always a problem. How much better to just drop it off?

I'm happy to give stuff away but I don't always want people coming to my home to get it. This way I can make sure things get a future without having to worry who I'm letting into the house or whether they might come back and complain if it doesn't work.

Sounds like your cat just likes to be around people. A good cat that you have.

He's SO popular with the people who know him. He even has his own facebook page and it was started by his friends at the pub. But like most stroppy teenagers, he's lovely to everybody else and rude to his family.

We have similar shops run by charities such as Red Cross that are popular. As you say, an inexpensive way to set up house. I can just picture Baloo doing his store duties

That's a great idea. I guess it's a bit different to an OP (opportunity) Shop as we call them. These are run by the Salvos, Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul, etc and only have clothes, books, and mostly small items. They're not allowed to take electrical items in case they are dangerous. Bureaucracy gone made again.

I think the other difference is that Charity shops have an obligation to try to make money for their charities. The Reuse doesn't appear to have much of a profit motive.

@boiboing That's probably it. At our 'tip' - sorry, Waste Recycling Centre - there is a great line of odds and ends that might be of use to people. They are for sale but at a very nominal rate. However I presume the profits from this go to the people who are responsible for the waste centre.

That is a great idea. I heard of the dump in Yellowknife letting people come to take usable things; but they didn't put them in a shop. Most just don't allow it at all.

It's quite forward thinking. I believe the aim is to cover the rent on the shop and the manager's wages and not to actually make a profit.
