Static Cling

United States
December 4, 2015 10:32am CST
Trying to dry my hair this morning was almost an effort in futility. The drier my hair got the more static cling it had and instead of having a nicely styled hairdo my hair was sticking up and out like I had stuck my finger in the light socket. I hate when the house gets dry from having the heat on and I hate it even more when I have static cling or get those electric shocks when you touch a doorknob. I solved my hair problem by getting a fabric softener sheet from the laundry room and rubbing it all over my hair and my brush. It worked well and tamed my otherwise wild hair. Thank goodness for fabric softener sheets!

Maybe you could have plugged the dryer into your hair and run it from the static and save the electricity cost.

@asylum gee why didn't I think of that!! it certainly would have saved on my electric and lord knows I had enough static to run that dryer

I find January worse for static. I never thought of using a fabric softener sheet on my hair.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I have a friend who thought she could use it on her pups fur and after spending hundreds of dollars on a vet to safe the pups life and now has to give Reba meds

The problem is that those chemicals leach through our skin cells @BelleStarr so you don't have to lick your hair to get them into your system, dogs aren't like cats, they don't generally do that whole lick thyself to clean bit. Those sheets could kill a cat.

@rebelann Though I have to say, it isn't likely Marilyn will be licking her hair and ingesting poison. I use dryer sheets from the Honest Company, not toxic.

I have a hair mousse I use when my hair gets static cling. Once when I was away on vacation and had forgotten my mousse, I used a touch of hand cream. I wiped it through my hair and it worked perfectly.

@Marilynda1225 Surprisingly, it didn't make it feel greasy.

@leapea2417 I'm glad the hand cream worked on your hair but didn't it make it greasy?

@amadeo actually I've thought about getting a humidifier but it's just one of those things that I never get around to doing. Guess I should think about it and not keep putting it off. Winter is terrible here and the house does get very dry

@marlina I've considered getting one but the cost stops me. I'm assuming having one connected to the furnace can be expensive

I would have never thought to use a dryer sheet on my hair. Your post made me realize our heating system also has a humidifier, we don't have that problem when the heart is on. In other homes we did and put pans of water on the stove just to fix that.

@painsonslate In my other house I used to keep pans of water on my radiators to eliminate the dryness in the house but don't have radiators in my current home. I guess putting pans of water around would help get some moisture in the air. Will have to try it

That is one for the books I would have never thought of using fabric softener sheet for your hair. The next person that I know that has that issue I will pass your great tip on.

Try a little Aragon oil before you dry your hair, that should help. I use that at this time of the year to prevent the dryness and static.

Although the softener sheets is not something we have use, a bit of coconut oil works too. Guessing though it depends of your hair type!

@jabouk it works well and sometimes I just rub it on the bristles of my brush and it does the trick

@Marilynda our hallways in our two story house always have too much humidity. So it seems everything is kind of limp. In the rooms where it is warmer we do get some static and I zapped my poor cat on the nose this morning. He was batting his head against me at the time.

I bet your poor cat was stunned when you zapped him in the nose. Those little electric shocks are just that...SHOCKING!!

Alternatively you could shave it all off. I just rub my hands over my hair (what is left of it) and it flicks out the water and is dry!

@garymarsh6 Don't I wish I could shave my head!! It would make things so much easier. You guys have it easy when it comes to being able to have short or a bald head

My hair is so full of static that there is nothing I can do with it other than to put it in a ponytail. It doesn't get rid of the static, but it keeps it out of my face.

@fawkes62 I wish my hair was long enough to pull back into a pony tail but it's too short.

The dryer sheet works. Another working solution is after you put lotion on those dry hands (hands always dry out in the indoors with heat on) just smooth your hair down. There isn't enough lotion to grease up your hair, but it will smooth it all down a bit and keep the electrical charges at bay.

I thought you might wish to read this, I never use any kind of fabric softener because my friend is spending so much money trying to keep her pup alive, he is suffering from the toxic affects those dryer sheets had on her when my friend wanted to eliminate that static from her fur. It's an eye opener to say the least.

@simone10 a fabric softener sheet works great and not only have I used it on my hair and brush to tame my static hair but I've rubbed it up & down my legs to keep my pants from sticking from static

@deborahdiane I don't do it all the time but occasionally I have no other alternative. I can't go out with my hair all sticking up like I put my finger in the socket
