Clean Your Room!

This weekend, I decided to take on a project to clean up my bedroom and clear out some junk and seldom-used items to donate to charity. Of course, in classic procrastination fashion, I kept putting it off this weekend, but finally set out to complete the task last night. But instead of accomplishing everything I set out to do, what actually happened last night was more along the lines of this: 1% actual cleaning 29% complaining and making excuses 70% playing with all the neat stuff I found in my room! Does this ever happen to you? Do you ever set out with the goal of cleaning up a room or area of your home, and then find yourself hours later playing with, or messing around with, items you found that you forgot you had? I dug up a bunch of old photo albums last night, and spent a good two hours looking through them all! I never did finish cleaning my room!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Very like me! I decided to clean our room too, this afternoon. What happened? I saw this pile of old tops & pants so I started trying each. One still fits so I put it in the laundry. Then, there was this pack of shoulder bags I used while still employed. Opened & searched all nooks & pockets & found this & that which flooded a memory of office work & its ups & downs. Wanted to cry.

I didn't even get to the clothes in my closet or dresser drawers! I'm the same way as you...I'll try every single thing on to see if it still fits or if it still looks good on me. Next thing you know, the whole day has been wasted!

@moffittjc It's ok. At least we found another treasure on those humps which is still wearable.

I encounter all kinds of unexpected long forgotten items during such occasions and often end up doing exactly the same.

@moffittjc I remember sorting out a lot of my old computer stuff earlier this year. I came across BNC connectors, twain cables and even a parallel gender bender. Old cables and connectors can come in handy at times, but I am unlikely to find a use for a serial to PS2 adapter these days.

Many times I'll just play the shuffling game...I'll clean out one junk drawer and just move all the stuff to other drawers or storage boxes, and then a year later I'll go through them again, and move them once again to another drawer or box for safekeeping!

Usually it's my junk drawer that fascinates me the most. I have one drawer that is my "catch-all" for stuff I don't know where else to put. And then usually when it gets full I'll go through it and look at everything I've thrown in it. Usually full of little souvenirs, or concert or sporting event tickets. Sometimes I even find money!

I am always amazed that I am holding onto things that even now I think are really important, yet I completely forgot they existed. And now that I know they do, I have to keep on keeping them.

@moffittjc That's tough, six months of not being used is too short a time, you will be looking for stuff you have thrown away if you do it too soon.;

@41CombedaleRoad I always say that if I don't use something within 6 months that I'm going to get rid of it, but in reality I just move it from my house out to the garage or storage shed, and then it will sit collecting dust for at least another 6 months!

I have this thing where, if I really want to keep something, I'll place a little sticker on it with the date. And then I'll keep it. Every time I go through my stuff and do a deep cleaning, I'll check out the date on the sticker, because it will tell me the last time I touched it. If more than six months have gone by since the last time I touched it, then it tells me I don't really need it (an exception would be holiday decorations, which only come out once a year)

@moffittjc I had a chair like that once, I called it my money chair. It was tilted in such a way that the coins in trouser pockets fell out! I made a lot of money out of that chair.

I can get easily distracted. Once I find old photo albums it's a given that nothing will get done and I'll enjoy a trip down memory lane

@Marilynda1225 Hey, maybe your closet is like the one in the Chronicles of Narnia, and you can find a secret door that takes you into a whole other world! Now that would be cool!

It's amazing what I dig out from under my bed, or from the back of my closet! It's funny how we forget about some of the stuff we have sitting right under our noses!

hahahahaaha! umm ya I do this! Last month or so I was cleaning my room but started playing with my Nintendo game boy. Have the old Donkey Kong game. The I tried on some clothes for about 40 minutes. Then started reading a book. I walked out of my room with it being twice the mess it was before I started "cleaning" it.

@VivaLaDani13 There's a couple of websites you can go to that future all the classic arcade games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pac-Man/Mrs. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc. You can play them right on your laptop or computer! It's not the same as playing them on a video game system though, but it is still fun!

@moffittjc @moffittjc I don't even know if you can buy them anymore. Probably a lot of money now since they are retro....or maybe they don't cost too much since they are retro haha. Could go either way.

As one procrastinator to another I have to admire you for having such a wonderful time without entirely finishing the job. You can put it off for another time now with a good conscience. My room presents me with a potential job, one that will probably only be partly fixed and then done again sometime later. you see I am not even a tidy minded procrastinator.

The photo album, that is a time stopper for me too. The albums are so old now that it is like looking at another time, black and white, some of older relatives yellowed with age. Ourselves when we were dressed by our mothers, our hair before nature was taken in hand.

@41CombedaleRoad One of the things I love about looking through old photo albums--and why it takes up hours of my time--is that with each photo I look at I am reminded of the time it was taken. In most cases, I can remember everything about the day and time the photo was taken, as well as what I was doing. I ended up daydreaming back to the time the photo was taken!

Usually I can pass up the photo albums, but it's been a while since I've browsed their contents, so I was feeling a bit nostalgic!

LOL, written by a man! My husband would do the same thing...but we don't accumulate ... we've moved 4 times in 14 years and each move brought tossing/selling and a little downsizing. We have had enough yard sales to last a lifetime. We have gotten rid of so much necessary stuff I need to buy more!

I moved a year ago and had the mother of all yard sales at the time, in the hopes of getting rid of as much clutter as possible. Yet yesterday, when I was cleaning, I came across a truckload of additional stuff I want to sell in a yard sale. Where does it all come from? lol

@paigea It seems like the more I try to get rid of, the more I end up having! And most of the stuff, I don't even remember buying it originally!

Although I don't look forward to it, I do that once a year! Pull out the stove and the refrigerator and give it a good cleaning. Hard to believe how dusty and dirty it gets behind our appliances!

I always get wrapped up in old stuff I find and reminisce and then I get too tired and lay down. I am never successful when I clean my room there are too many goodies, So I just stick to trying to clean my house

That's why my room gets so cluttered...it's the one place where I seem to store everything of value to me, and it's the one place I probably clean the least! (well, I do vacuum and dust and wash the sheets, so don't think I'm a slob! lol)

I used to do that all of the time. Then I gave up trying to do the whole thing at one go. Doing a little area (like one drawer) and then stopping somehow meant I got less distracted- I guess because I pulled out less stuff to deal with. Anyway, somehow it was quite organized a while ago, but needs to be tackled again.

I generally do that when I clean my house. I won't tackle the whole house in one day...I'll just do little sections at a time, or one chore each day. Yesterday, I vacuumed. Today, I folded laundry. Tomorrow I may wash the dishes. Baby steps! lol

There are plenty of distractions when it comes to cleaning out a room or closet. I've been trying to go through a cupboard at a time but it's a slow process.
