The Pea-Men

Promenade in Spain - my own picture.

Wherever you go in the world there is always somebody trying to part you from your cash, and the Costa Blanca in Spain is no different. On our walks along the promenade we often encounter 'pea-men'. They use a variation on the old 'Find the Lady' trick, only they use a pea and 3 down-turned cups, placed on a small collapsible table. They are sleight of hand artists, and they place a pea beneath one of the cups, then move them around quickly and you have to guess which cup they are under. I've observed them over the weeks we've been here, and have sussed out their 'modus operandi'. To the unwary (gullible) person it appears to be just a one man operation, but in fact there is a small gang of them. One man acts as a lookout, as of course what they are doing is illegal. When this man spies a police vehicle he shouts a warning, and you should see the speed with which they dismantle the table (sometimes throwing it onto the beach), then they all melt into the crowd. The others in the 'gang' are plants or stooges. They aren't all men, there are also women of varying ages, obviously there to allay the suspicions of the potential prey. Anyway, when people see the stooges 'winning', greed triumphs over common sense and they bet because it seems so easy. Sometimes the operator even allows them to win, and then cons them into a 'double or nothing' scenario. Were people born yesterday? I've even tried warning some of them - the first time I did it, the fellow didn't want to know. The laugh was on me, as the next day I saw him again and he was part of the gang! Oops. So now I've decided that if people are silly enough to fall for this, they deserve to lose their money!

You should see the amount of people doing this in site of The houses of Parliament. They are thieves and of course there have plants in the audience who fake winning. People are stupid enough to then play. Well you know what they say. A fool and his money is soon parted. It beggars belief that there are so many gullible tourists in London.

@garymarsh6 Is it illegal in England? If so, how do they get away with it in such a prominent position?

@jaboUK As you say the police move them on then five minutes later they are back again as soon as the police are out of sight.

I am reading this to my husband. He fell for a scam in Paris that we saw over and over after he had been conned. He ended up buying a "Gold" ring. And I kind of felt he deserved it too.

We've heard about a gold ring one too although the one we heard involved touching the ring then it was very bad luck not to buy it.

@jaboUK it's easy to laugh at someone else. But I really thought I would not have bought that ring.

I have been to the Costa del Sol many times, but have never encountered anyone trying this stunt. The promenades are often littered with people selling handbags, sunglasses or pirated DVDs, which seems very prolific.

@jaboUK Those operating the shell game usually use a basic folding table.

@Asylum They actually keep the promenade here pretty clear with regular police patrols, and there aren't any stalls as such. I suppose they'd take too long to dismantle.

I am laughing so hard right now because my little son is playing that this morning. He is using 6 paper cups and trying to hide a game piece - we have to try to pick which cup it is under . We have a childrens book about a little girl living in a poor city in Asia - she gets conned with a lady selling "wish" birds.

@jaboUK I remember this trick played by southern immigrants, especially during the holidays. They put their little table in front of the "Galleria" (Piazza Duomo) and attracted a lot of curious.

@LadyDuck I've known about the 'Find the Lady' trick with playing cards, but this one is new to me as a scam. I've seen it done by magicians on the TV.

You can't change human nature and many people think money is easy to make. Otherwise the casinos wouldn't be so packed all the time.

@BelleStarr But at least people know what they are getting into in a casino. Here they are thinking they can actually outwit the conman - why don't they realise he's something of a magician and they have no chance?

When it comes to this scam it is not a game of chance, they always win because it is a cheat they are doing. You've hit what they are doing right on the head Janet. Though I would expect nothing less from you two, they would have to be up real early to fool either of you :D

@maggs224 Yup - they're not up early enough to fool us! They used to have this sort of thing outside the races, but it was usually the Find the Lady one, where you have to pick the Queen out from playing cards.

It must be quite a sight seeing them dismantle their table and such when the police come by. People are easily duped when it comes to betting and always think it's an easy way to make money and never think of how much they will lose.
