5am. Just can't get to sleep.

Perth, Australia
January 2, 2016 3:11pm CST
I am absolutely exhausted but if you are used to me by now you will know that I struggle with sleep. No matter how tired I can be, there's a good chance I will stay awake anyway. I don't know the reason this time. I just know that I have laid down a lot during the night, closed my eyes but they open back up again. Things on my mind perhaps. So decided to get up and chill on here with you guys for awhile and pop a movie on. I suppose I could use this time to clean my room.... nah my body is tired but my mind is very active. What do you do in this situation? If it even happens to you. Surely I am not the only vampire on here....

I have a very hard time getting to sleep but I usually stick with it and eventually go to sleep.

So when you say "stick with it" you basically mean just making yourself lay there with your eyes closed?

@fishtiger58 lol well if it usually does the trick then I say that's good. I've done that a few times and it works but there has been way too many occasions where I will do it and lay there for hours with my eyes closed and nothing happens. It is horrible.

Is it ok to ask you what sort of things you do to try and turn your mind off? Sometimes I do listen to nice YouTube videos like very soft music or rain but it isn't working this time for me.

There are times when it happens to me. Last night for example I came down after going to bed, wrote up an idea, then started answering questions on MyLot.

Same here. Well it either helps to calm me down and keep me occupied or I end up staying awake for even longer because it gets addicting lol

I did think about trying it once but I prefer not to. I mean like it would be my very last resort. Just feel weird taking those sorts of pills.

By now, you should be very aware you aren't the only Walker of the Night! I tend to sleep less than anyone else I know, but I am always high energy, even when tired! I can/will make a suggestion, though. Lay down (laying on my left side works best for me) and close your eyes. Now, picture everything black. I mean EVERYTHING is black, just like a totally empty space. Nothing but black. Keep thinking black, black, black.;'l I make myself do that for at least an hour. Even if I don't fall asleep, I have given my body a rest, which you need, too. Usually, though, I do fall asleep. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me!

@VivaLaDani13 No, Dani, I hadn't heard of this until you ask me. (I just got home a little while ago and so I looked this up for you. If you are interested in reading more about this, then try this article, hon. ) You are welcome!
Decode your current sleep position and decide what is the best and worst for your health — from sleeping on your back to sleeping on your side — to get a good night’s rest.

Thank you! I will give that a go the next time I lay down. I read recently that apparently sleeping on your left side is healthier for you anyway. I didn't really read enough of it to understand why but have you heard this?

I have found to counter-act the tons of things that seem to jump to the fore-front when you lay down to sleep is to say the word "nothing" slowly and repeatedly. Not verbally but mentally. @VivaLaDani13 . It seems to block everything else out and the next thing I know, it's morning.

@VivaLaDani13 I'll lay in bed for sure and try. Watch tv or play on my tablet until I am able to fall asleep. This last time the doctor gave me meds to help but I don't recommend that.

I have a suggestion but I don't think I can say it out loud..on here? You probably guessed it! Also, you should probably get some sleep though. Maybe try meditation to calm yourself and rid the constant thoughts at night!

If I've managed to sleep until 5am, I think I've done well. I often wake at 2am or 3am and struggle to get back to sleep. Then, when it's time to get up, I find myself at my most sleepy and wanting to nod off. I hate that! At 5am I would probably just laze in bed for a while before getting up and then maybe have a snooze later to catch up.

I used to be like this, but since I choose another working schedule, I always sleep at 11 PM, just for another day to be ahead. We can't waste too much energy on a day

I struggled like u in the past but when my business involved physical work i slept very quick and easily with a deep sound sleep due to the tiredness of my body and no thinking in my mind :) Both mind and body need to be calm for a deep sleep:)

You should try to divert your thoughts to things that you actually like. Like skateboarding, Texas. Now imagine doing awesome moves with that skateboard. Or imagine being at Texas and imagine all good things / experiences there. Force yourself in the beginning. Slowly it will come to you more easily with time. Although I think you have already tried this....
