The Pile Keeps Growing

No, this isn't a discussion about dirty laundry, or even dishes. It's not about a pile of dirt, or snow, although I've dealt with those in the past. This time it is a pile of cookies and desserts. In the weeks leading up towards Christmas, my youngest daughter and I did a fair amount of baking. We also made a trip to the Dutch Store for some traditional Dutch seasonal treats. We had a veritable mountain of sweets. My sweet tooth was enjoying these wonderful treats, but I knew some self control was needed or I would need to shop for some new clothes. The easiest way to deal with this bounty was to share. I sent several large trays of baked goods to the homes of relatives. This was such a brilliant strategy. Unfortunately, my relatives simply showered me with even more goodies. This past week, I thought the pile had been reduced. This didn't last long. My husbands employer gifted us with a large basket, filled with chocolates, candies and, you guessed it, more cookies. Last night, my oldest daughter and her husband dropped by with a pie for dessert and, yes, even more cookies. Now, almost two weeks after Christmas, my diet is still on hold. The mountain of treats is still growing.

Holidays just inspire the cooks and bakers inside in all of us, don't they? :) You visit stores and see ingredients on special sales for pumpkin pies, and you want to go home and make that pumpkin pie, even though, personally I have never had it before, nor do I know if I will like it. It is so hard to control yourself. When it comes to sweets, my husband likes to make demands, make me a cake, bake me some cookies, make some dessert... He says he loves desserts, but when I make them, he won't eat much. Once I made a nutella cake on his demand, and he tasted it. That's it, just tasted it. I had to eat the whole thing during the course of a week. Makes me wonder whether he only likes a limited amount of sweetness, or am I just such a bad cook? :P I stopped making desserts because I have to watch my weight, and hubby won't help me eat it at all, what is the point of it? I wish you could send me some, that way, I would fulfill both our sweet tooth cravings, and won't even have to worry about leftovers.. :) Just kidding. Maybe you could donate some of it, if you have any orphanages or so nearby. That'd be good.

@Morleyhunt I don't know what you mean, but I know that there might are helplines that take leftover food from gatherings and parties and such, to people who need it. So instead of throwing leftovers, you could call and they'd take it to someone who really needs it. I figured you could really do the same with some of the sweets, of you really have a lot of it lying around with nowhere to go.

The cookies call me. The ice cream whispers my name. How can I resist their siren call.

You know what? It sounds to me as if everyone is playing "tag" with the treats! It sounds as if everyone is trying to lose weight and is merely "cleaning" their cupboards so to speak! I hope you can get rid of all of those treats soon! No shelters around that you can donate such things to?

If I was the only person living in this house I would donate at least half to the food bank, but alas, I have but one vote, and the two men in my life have large sweet tooths.

@Morleyhunt Perhaps you could convince them to hide the treats? I doubt they'd mind much if that was there lunch and dinner for a few days?

Some of these treats will make their way to the freezer, as soon as I find some extra space.

We didn't make that many cookies so our treats are long gone. Your place sounds like quite a magnet for sweets. Go find homeless folks and treat them?

I didn't think we made that many cookies. The cookies we baked are gone. It's all the treats that have arrived to replace them that seem to keep multiplying.

@Morleyhunt While shopping this morning I found a little box of store cookie rocks that were being sold at half off. I bought them then tested them on our Peter burro. He munched a couple right up.

Boy, do I understand that! I was looking at my Christmas "stash" just this afternoon, rather embarrassed at it. I have goodies that haven't even been opened yet. How can I get back on track? I don't want to waste all that candy!

That is the dilemma. I can't waste it, yet eating it affects the other waist.

I stuck with a few all time favorites and they were cleaned out the night of Christmas. My children cleaned the plate except for a few that they left for my husband. Now my husband wants me to bake more.

@Morleyhunt I am the baker for our family and friends. So I don't need to worry about anyone bringing goodies here.

The kids actually helped out with quite a bit of the bounty...it's just that more and more arrived at our table.

I am afraid I would be eating, as I also would be putting it in bags and freezing the mountain of goodies.

I made some room and let the 'gevulde speculaas' find a home in the freezer to be enjoyed at a later date.

Now if only you can distribute some of your abundance through the internet I'm sure you could dwindle that pile down in no time

And it seems all my friends are watching their weight and don't really want to help eat up all these goodies. I am limiting myself to just one or two a day. By the time I get through them next Christmas will be just around the corner.

Yes cookies and more cookies. My husband is Dutch I'm wondering what kind of Dutch treats you got. He loves Bonket, a pastry with almond paste inside. I don't care for it much it's too overwhelming in taste for my liking.

I know, right? At work, a couple of guys brought huge trays of cookies left from the holidays. It was hard to look away and even harder to walk away from the break room with just a cup of coffee. Hard, but I have to resist the sweet urge. I need to lose the pounds I put on during the holidays.
