It is always said in a defence that Islam is a peaceful religion. But is the peace only directed towards fellow Muslims ? Why there is lot of violence and hatred towards non-Muslims?

Recently there was riot in Malda India. Again the Muslims rioted, burnt temples, shot and killed Hindus. But nothing was done since they are the minorities and appeasement of them is must for the govt and also the media to gain trp. Really pissed off at the moment!!

@Auntylou ...I was listening to Javed Akhtar...a writer and a well read man out here. He is an atheist but his thinking matches with mine. An average person is not that well read and has certainly not read the holy books of another religion to that depth or even bothered to understand them. Here is a man who is against all fanaticism and I believe I am intelligent enough to follow him.

I think that many religions may start with good moral behaviour codes, but power is always involved too. The Christian religion fought not only other religions, but against different branches of the same (Catholics and Protestants)

some muslims use religion as an excuse for violence...same as some christians do. I'm pretty much anti religion as with the majority of religious books you can pick and choose parts of them, or even small verses, to justify your nutty beliefs. The world would be a better place without any religion...they're outdated concepts and shouldn't have a place in the 21st century.

Unfortunately, you are going to get a lot of flack from your views, Mike, although what you are saying makes perfect sense. Personally, I am not anti-religion, but I am anti-religious-fanatic that justifies taking other people's freedoms and choices away based on his or her religious beliefs.

@purplealabaster yes I know I may get flack but it's one of my few deeply held beliefs. I have a fundamental problem with books a few thousand years ago holding any relevance today. Science changes as new things come around...religious books do not which is why they hold no value for me as such except they interest me as historical documents. If people choose to believe in them then thats up to them and none of my business. I have a problem when religion interferes and is given some credence in day to day life.

@Mike197602 sometimes the lack of religion has the same effect, but by forcing the will the of others to cow tow to a secular way of life.

There is violence and hatred in just about any religion you can name. Most religions say they are peaceful (and for the most part this is true), but then a war is started in the name of one or another religion. There are fanatics in most religions, and you should not apply the actions of a few to the beliefs of the many.

@mkrnex It is not just Islam and Christianity. People of the Jewish faith have been involved in these disputes for centuries. There have been other smaller religious cults as well that have participated in violence. I am not saying that all religions are violent, but PEOPLE in all religions have the potential for violence in the name of their religion.

In hinduism there isnt any history of violence for religion or war in the name of religion. No mass conversion by missionaries etc.War in the name of religion was only in Christianity and Islam I guess.

In the U.S. we have a hate group called the Ku Kux Klan. They claim to be Christians, yet they commit acts of violence (firebombings, lynchings, terrorism) against blacks, Jews, and anyone else they don't like. In the 11th century Catholics set fire to synagogues, burning Jews alive, while singing "Christ, We Adore Thee." In the 16th century Catholics killed thousands of Huguenots in France. Are these well-known examples indicative of ALL Christians? I hope you say no. By the same token, even 1% of a religion with over a billion adherents is still a lot of people (ten million) giving the other 99% a black eye.

Ya , I know Christians in medieval were following what Islam was and is doing now. Mass conversions by force or missionaries, war and killing etc. But I am talking about current scenario. Hindus are not like anything you mentioned above.Hindus never done mass conversion or war in the name of religion. Actually it is a way of life. Right now in India Christians aren't any problems, but Muslim community is causing many problems in the name of Islam. Fed up by it.

@FourWalls ya extremists are everywhere. But the extent of Extremity which was done in Christianity and Islam has never been touched by Hinduism . That is what I wanted to say. Basically one can't convert to Hindu there is no such process in our script.

@mkrnex The worst thing about Hinduism is the caste system which consigned many to terrible restricted lives, though I gather it is not so strong now

Throughout history, the powers-that-be used religion for their political ends, usually for a land grab. It is still going on today. For millennia, killing has been justified in the name of God. What a sad irony.

Their is no peace in Islam..They even fight and kill themselves...They have no love in them...Their prophet was a lire and killer...He was also a child molester...So how can the ones following this evil man be any better....Evil only makes more Evil......

I think the basics of that religion are oriented towards peace or achieving peace. If you notice their language, it is extremely polite. It is one thing to belong to a religion and it is another thing to follow a religion. Even worse thing is to think that I am following a religion, and not really following it. I think we all are guilty of being in the last category. The muslims I have come across have been peaceful folks and have won me over with their politeness. I am not going to say they are bad. What happened in malda and even beef episode is politically motivated. I would not read too much into it.

Islam is peace and I believe every religion is about peace. Yeah but there are people who uses Islam for their private gain, to make riots between people. If you look at the history you can see similar incidents with other ideologies too. Hitler used Darwin's Evolution theory to justify his actions. We cant blaim Darwin for that! Just like that we cant blaim Islam for what the people who say they are muslims are doing. Islam is no what the muslims do. Islam is what they are supposed to do. I can see that tere are riots at your place, which is really sad. It should be prevented and the real guilty ones should be punished. No one has the rights over others to harm them in any manner. There is no compulsion in religion and beliefes. Everyone have the right to follow their own. Islam really respect that. If we look at other incidents happened at India like the Beef incident at Dadri, religion had nothing to do with them. Just the one who want to accomplish their private benifits by making people enemy with each other. So brother we should unite againts all these actions which affects our unity.

No matter what your religion preaches, at the end of the day, your decision are yours. Your choices, your consequences, your free will.
