I love lavender. In reading my emails today I found an article about studies that have been done and what they are finding true about lavender. As well as it being a tick deterrent studies in South Africa find that the effects of lavender oil as apposed to DEET- based tick repellent was very apparent. With a 10 percent or higher concentration of lavender essential oil the results at repelling insects lasted for two hours. What you want to do is add about 10 to 20 drops of lavender oil to a dollop of your favorite(unscented) lotion, apply this to your body before going outdoors. A study jointly run in both Iran and Canada shows the affects of drinking tea made with lavender flowers in being more effective than anti-depressant drugs. And, without the sometimes extreme side effects. So lavender can be used to assist with the symptoms of depression. Two cups of the lavender infused tea used daily by adding two teaspoons of the dried lavender flowers to boiling water and letting it steep for 10 minutes. I find that lavender oil will help me calm down when having a panic attack. I sniff my lavender stuffed pillow and I feel better almost immediately.

I didn't know any of this, and am tempted to see if it will grow in Texas this spring. I have some room in the front I could put some in. I wonder could even dry my own flowers then.

It's a rather pretty plant. So is sage which is used for purification and clearing out bad spirits by the Native American Indians.

@celticeagle oh sage I know and love. All I have I bought, but we always have that. some believe sage clears all spirits out, and temple incense only clears out the ones with ill intent. We have both, love the smell.

I have a number of lavender bushes growing in the garden and I did not realise how useful they could be. Last year I was overwhelmed by flowers, this year I will dry some of them and make tea.

Oh, yes, the tea is divine. And you can make little sachet pillows for gifts also.

@41CombedaleRoad ....You want to harvest the flowers early. If they are old they won't last. Mine were harvested months ago and still have a nice scent. I use flowers and some of the stems.

I didn't realize these benefits of lavender, but have to try it as a tick repellent when I go home. I am wild about lavender. It is so pretty to look at and smell, too.

Hi Dianne. I like your new hair do. I just wanted to stress to you not to use a lotion with a scent. You will be working against yourself if you do.

The scent of fresh lavender is just heavenly. However, too much of it can trigger my allergies.

You might want to just use the oil because the dust from the stems and flowers can cause you problems.

Oh, I would think it is around somewhere. Pretty popular one. Rather expensive though.
PureFormulas offers free standard shipping for Ylang Ylang Extra Oil (100% Pure) - 1 fl. oz (30 ml) that helps ease anxiety and reverses feelings of despair.

The calming effects of lavender are well documented, less so the anti-tick one! That is a super photo.
