An appointment at last, but not on a Wednesday

My surgeon originally informed me that he would try to push my eye operation through as an emergency, which would be on a Wednesday. Naturally I have been expecting a telephone call for the past few Wednesdays. Much to my surprise I received a call this morning from him. It seems that he has arranged a slot for next Friday, so at least I have a definite date now. At least all the sense of the unknown has now been removed. It should prove to be an interesting journey because my appointment has been set for 7-30 AM. All that I need to do now is to try to avoid suffering a cardiac arrest in the anticipation of what the operation will be like.

What a terrible time to be there, I hope that the public transport are available. Now the date is known, try not to stress, stay here with us and avoid thinking to the surgery all the time.

I checked the timetable while I was out today and the first Metrolink tram runs at 6-20 AM.

It's good you now have a date. I can imagine you won't sleep much on the Thursday night.

I still have to check whether public transport will be available at that time on Friday morning.

@JudyEv It will just have to do. If I am looking in risk of being late by the time that I reach the city centre then I will just have top get a taxi.

@Asylum I see in your response to Anna there is a 6.20am link. Is that early enough for you?

I'm glad that you now have a definite date. 7:30 is wholly before sparrowfart, so I hope that both you and especially the surgeon are both compos mentis at that hour! I have found that controlled breathing exercises are a great help in calming the nerves before an operation (something like 'breathe in for 3, hold for 3, breathe out for 5'). Don't overdo them, though. Over-oxygenation is not good! I wish you calm nerves and good luck!

I am also hoping that my surgeon is compos mentis at that time, which will at least make one of us.

Yes, so I am now back to the sense of mixed emotions. I am pleased that some progress is on the agenda, but seriously apprehensive about the whole experience awaiting me.

Fear of the unknown is common. I remember a dentist appointment I had. I told my husband I would rather have a baby than keep that appointment.

The unknown certainly is the worst part of it. After having the cataract operation and being aware of what it amounted to I was prepared for the next one, but instead I have another unknown experience to endure.

When I had scary dental procedures planned some years ago, I studied up on them so I'd know what to expect. I would do the same if it were I planning the eye surgery. I like to know what I'm up against, so that I can pray and believe for the best outcome but not freak out if I hear something and not know what it means.

It's going to either be the longest week ever or the shortest or both. I would prefer an early morning appointment as the doctor and crew will be at their best. Good to hear it is on the schedule! That's one hurdle jumped.

@Jeanniemaries That actually remains to be seen because the operation is apparently a risky procedure and could result in a further operation.

I have my fingers crossed that they will not postpone it ... oh, don't have a cardiac, you need to give 4 weeks advance notice if you plan to have one

Since the operation will be taking place in 4 days, that does not give me enough time to book a cardiac arrest, so I guess that I will have to give that plan a miss.

@Asylum I know what you mean. I had to see a dermatologist today because I had a bump removed from my ear and the report came back inconclusive. They had to cut out some for another test. Now I'm sitting here with a bandaged, very sore, ear.

I am seriously hoping that this is the last operation on that eye and that I can then go on to the cataract operation on my left eye.

Distract yourself by doing something in which you can become engrossed. You know, something that makes time fly by and you don't even notice. Good luck, Barry.

I suppose that I could try spending 14 hours a day on Mylot, but even then I would still keep allowing my mind to return to the approaching operation.

I actually though that the horror was over after my original cataract operation because the next cataract would be easier. Of course I did not allow for my particular luck.
