Yellow Lights: How do you react to Yellow Traffic Lights?

United States
March 31, 2016 9:44pm CST
Let's discuss about yellow traffic lights! How do you proceed to driving when you hit a yellow traffic light? A. Stop B. Floor it through the intersection C. Drive regularly without increasing/decreasing speed and it doesn't matter if the light turns red as you're going through the intersection D. Other (It depends) It is hard to really answer as it depends on the situation/scenario. But when I'm driving, I always hope the light does not turn yellow when I get to the intersection. But if it does - I always look in my rear view to see if anyone is driving very closely and (may not be able to stop in time), I will proceed to driving quickly across the intersection. But if I can safely stop - I will stop also but not if the light "just" turned yellow! And of course - you have to look ahead to see if there is clearance for you to make it to the other side also! How about you?

Floor it unless there's a camera

In my area - there were 2 camera lights. 1 at a downhill/uphill (dumbest area) but now they're discontinued. There are only a few camera lights I know of that exist. My uncle/aunts have encountered a hefty fine from them

I choose D. I usually slow down if I feel like I have time but will gas it to get through if I don't think I can stop before winding up in the intersection. I do check the car behind me in the mirror. I was rear ended once by a guy in a van who had a cell phone in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, and was turned talking to the guy in the passenger seat. I saw all this in my rear view mirror as he bore down on me in my Jeep Cherokee. My sons were with me and I told them to be ready, we were about to get hit. No one was injured, but the guy tried to blame me for not running the light. It had already turned red and I was fully stopped when he hit me.

I too slow down if I have time but if I can make it - I will too if it's safe. It all depends on the situation. I always look in my rear view mirror because I don't want to get hit. I would be traumatized just a bit and not know what to do. I am glad no one was injured - hope you got some money from that man whose at fault. Funny how he tried to blame you when he was the one at fault!

As you say it depends on the situation, most of the time it's better to stop.

After this post, I encountered so many yellow lights today - the traffic lights were not in my favor today

@infatuatedbby Don't you have when the one in front of you slow downs and he arrives to cross just while the yellow light is coming on. I hate this.

I don't drive any longer, but if I'm on my bike, unless there is absolutely no one around, I stop rather than try to sprint through it.

@teamfreak16 Lately I have come across very nice cyclists Even ones who stop at 4 way stop signs like they are cars. And I insisted that man to go first and he wouldn't. He kept telling me to go since it was my turn. If bikers are on the side walk and go without stopping then I understand because they're more visible, but if they're on the road - like making a left or going on roads that are 50mph+ need to be careful just a little!

Ah yes! Once in a while - I do see bikers who sprint especially in heavy traffic and I shake my head. In rush hour traffic when not many people are paying attention, rushing home - I don't think that's the safe thing to do. But there are some who obey and has common sense.

@infatuatedbby - And those guys are one of the reasons many motorists hate every cyclist they see.

I usually follow option C, unless I know it's been yellow for awhile. This discussion reminds me of one of my driving instructor's lectures. He said to watch out for the "stale green light," which is one that's been green for awhile. Out of caution, he advised, ease off the accelerator when you see a stale green light, so you won't be tempted to rush or get caught in the intersection when the light changes to yellow and then red. Most people are in way too much of a hurry to adhere to that, but it's not bad advice.

Sometimes even if I see the green light for a while - I cannot time if the light will still be green or turn yellow. Sometimes I slow down and it's still green! I just hope when I get to the intersection it won't be yellow My driver instructor at the DMV I got was total bs. I had my drivers appointment scheduled at rush hour traffic (9am) and he told me to make a right. There are dashed lines and that's when you can turn right however during rush hour traffic (for those getting to work) they don't wait for the dashed lines - they cut into the solid bike lane too! Well, when my instructor told me to make a right - I waited until I got to the dashed lines and turned right. My instructor told me "sometimes you got to break the rules".. And marked me off a point. I was so upset! But I passed anyway...

@puddleglum Exactly. I told my mom afterwards and she told me to just ignored me and was thankful I had passed. I was too but upset on why I got marked down when it wasn't my fault at all.

@infatuatedbby "Sometimes you got to break the rules" is not what you expect to hear from the DMV. That test sounds like it was a big headache.

That man sounded awful. Glad a cop was around to arrest that man. Pedestrians have the right away and it was yellow - so it wasn't like you were walking on a red light! I hope he learned his lesson.

It helps from the gap of green to red.

It depends on the situation. If I can stop safely I will otherwise I will floor it. Like last week it was raining so I floored it as I knew I'd slide.

Just so happens when I post this ~ I came across literally a ton of yellow lights today lol. I ran all of them... (not something I'd do) but I felt with the car I was driving (my moms) it had more speed for a v6!

There are some situations when it's hard to stop - I will stop if I can but if I see a car behind me too close, I'll step on the gas and go if it's safe.

Hehe. As a passenger - do you ever tell the driver to stop or slow down? Or get scared of the drivers driving?

That is one traffic rule that is not usually followed or neglected here in my country. The driver would normally sped up intersection to catch the red light ignoring the yellow.

Oh yes, there are some drivers like that here also! When we drive or cross the streets we always have to pay attention because there is always that one car that might run the red also!

I am that same as you pretty much. See if there is anyone following too close behind me first. But if I can make it through I might speed up a bit to get through, but usually not over the speed limit. But if I have time to stop then I will stop for sure. I am super good at following the rules of the road and do my best to stick with them....

If I have time to safely stop - I will do so because I am in no rush. Even if I am in a rush - I won't rush it because sometimes even if you make the light, you'll be waiting at the other side too anyway!

Ugh! This is always a decision for me. I think I have to say OTHER some times when I am making a decision and I take too long to decide and I end up running a red light. Lol. That is the worst.

Oh no! If I have to think too much - I will just stop. Better to be safe!
