Worth your time?

We sometimes use this phrase, its not worth my time or is it worth your time? So what do we really mean by this statement? Have we already put a monetary value on our time and hence a particular task does not fit that bracket and is not worth our time, or is it just a phrase to use and get away with something we are not interested in doing?

It is a little of both. Some times people ask you to do something for them and they offer to pay but the task is not easy and the money they are offering is less than worth it and well sometimes you just look for an easy out and its not worth my time seems to be perfect.

Somethings aren't worth our time but the phrase doesn't seem to be used as much. Sometimes we may view sonethings as not being worth our time but that isn't always the case.

I do use this phrase sometimes, but not judged by monetary value. I always ask myself, if this is essential for me to do it. Of course, sometimes for my pleasure, I'd still choose to do it. I only have 24 hours a day, and I have many things that I want to do in a day, so I'd choose what I really want to do. It's definitely not because of the monetary value, but more of whether I want or love to do it. Spending time with children is definitely worth it, but it's not by monetary value at all.

@vhpsandi I am not too sure if it's priority. Helping others in need is definitely worth my time as well, I am not sure if this is high priority in my list. I may spend two hours to watch a movie, though it's definitely not high priority. I guess anything I'd like to do worth my time - perhaps interest?

So it means priority to you. Nice angle.

Ha ha, great question! I wonder about this too. What is time worth? I guess it depends on whether you have something pressing that you should be doing. For example, if it's Friday night and I could be spending time with my friends OR working online all night to earn $2? I will choose the friends any day. However, if the alternative is do nothing or earn the $2, I will choose the $2. So I really feel like it depends.

Why do you associate 'worth' with 'monetary value'? 'worth' has a much broader meaning. If someone says, "Soandso isn't worth my love", money is not what they think of I'm sure.

I think the keyword here is time.

Yes, it is a pretty flexible phrase I guess. I don't think I've used it in ages

It is flexible, that is why we use it in different contexts

I think it means that the matter presented to us has no value or interest in our estimation of things that we care for, are interested in or want to do.
