Rock On

Canada
May 2, 2016 10:04am CST
When my oldest son came camping with us years ago he built us a beautiful dam and large pool with rocks in the river. It was big enough for a lot of us to enjoy at the same time. When he was done building he built a bunch of little people all around our pool. They were made out of tiny rocks and probably stood about 6 inches high. The river we camp on is full of rocks, shallow and always moving, My youngest son decided to go bigger, he started piling big rocks on each other making Inukshuk's. He was in Jr High, and learned about the Canadian Natives and the huge sculptures they made all over the country. They were markers for natives. You can learn about Inukshuks by googling them, they are amazing That young one started something really big. Pretty soon all of our children and us adults were building them, people would ask for permission to come into our camp to see up-close what they could see from down the river. One of the first years we had a father that was angry because we told his son not to throw rocks at our sculptures. We figured when he sobered up he would understand.... We heard thundering feet approaching our camp site on a Sunday (the day picnics are enjoyed across the river). It was a group of teens who asked if they could build with us, Of course we said yes and when they left the river was full of huge tall sculptures that made us smile. One year we were approached by the Department of Environmental Conservation who asked if they could take photos to be used in the programs they make for the state. We were honored. I've seen the photos they took on line. Now when we approach the river we can see little sculptures all over the river. We did start something good and fun to do in the Adirondacks of New York State. They stand up unless knocked down or until the next big rain that raises the water level and puts them back into the water. You could build them too, its easier than it looks.

That's pretty cool that you all started that and it continues by others that visit that area. I find it amazing that they were deemed worthy of putting into the program online. Your sons are probably pretty happy about all of that too. I missed this post otherwise, I may have remembered when seeing that last photo in the river. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for reading it. The photos show the way the river usually was, this year you could only see a rock a few days between rains. The raging water covered even the huge rocks.

So beautiful, but I am dismayed to think that anyone (impaired or not) would think it was OK to thow rocks at those.

@PainsOnSlate Nice! Yes, I remember when it was a rare thing to see rocks stacked like that, but now they are everywhere, even inland.

We noticed that alchol made some parents too big for thier britches. He thought we were being mean to his 8 year old so he started throwing rocks. My sister and I got into the water and stared at him, he wasn't drunk enough to throw rocks at two women in the river so he and the brat left and we never saw him again. Kids who tube the river will try to knock them down as they fly by our campsite but they rarely can do it because they are moving too fast... We have knocked them down when a neighbor moved in to the next campsite with small children, for thier safety. Knowing how small children are curious. That was long ago, now everyone is doing it and it warms our hearts when we drive into the campground and see the sculptures by many campsites. Sadly this summer, the summer of rain, they didn't last long after we get them up, the water was too deep and too fast. The photo attached was one taken with my iPad, this summer, you can see how fast the water is moving and no rocks are showing except a few we made.

@shshiju It is a river, it is spring fed from the mountain. It flows all year long, In the spring it is rushing and sometimes floods because of the snow melting. The summer is delight, there is water in the river no matter how hot and dry it gets.

The mountains are very old and not pointy at the top. But they are gorgeous with trees all over. The rocky river came from the Glacer when they melted. its a magical place (for us).

@BelleStarr you are too funny. I don't think iVe ever been bumped by anything in the water. One time a snake was swimming near me so I got out of the water, but it only happened once...

Can't do that at a State Park. It a natural only place. Just to make it safe we often knock them down before we leave. While its our campsite, we leave them up because others don't get into our space. We knock them down to prevent a small child from getting hurt after we leave.
