Is There A Vegetable That You REALLY Hate??

With me, it has to be mushrooms. I want to like them, but I just can't bring myself to eat them. I don't know what it is about them that turns me off... but something certainly does. They look so "meaty" and that should be a good thing, but it just isn't working. Now could it be a genetic thing?? My mom hates mushrooms too. That is the only thing that I can put it down to! I even like Brussels Sprouts. Now even I can't figure that one out. Okay, I like them and I hate them. I hadn't even tasted one until hubby introduced them to Christmas Dinner! I thought that he was crazy... the same thing with marmite and heating up beans! We had always eaten beans with salads, but I have to admit, I'm starting to like them on toast! Now Marmite... can't quite bring myself to like that on toast... but it too must be a genetic thing. Both our kids and hubby could live on the stuff. Me... can't stand even the smell.

Australia's equivalent of Marmite is Vegemite which people seem to either like or hate too.

I have heard that and I wish that I could eat the stuff. I read an article years ago stating that eating it will even slow down wrinkles! I might learn to swallow the stuff just for that reason. lol.

@CRK109 It's a spread - a yeast extract - which you spread thinly on bread or toast or similar stuff. It's hard to describe the taste but it's quite salty. A bit like Marmite or Bonox if you know of those. My boys had Vegemite sandwiches for school for years. Every time I tried something else they asked for Vegemite again.

I've heard some awful comments about vegemite. So what exactly is it?

I don't like brussell sprouts, celery, artichokes, cauliflower. I do love mushrooms, like on pizza.

I don´t hate lettuce, but it´s one of the leafy vegetables that I eat the least. It´s probably because I don´t find a good way to mix them with other foods.

@Hate2Iron Yes, it always adds some variety to it. I have tried it with both; a sandwich and a salad with lemon and sliced cucumber.

There is no goodness in lettuce, but it does give a nice crunch to a sandwich!!

My husband can't stand celery either but I love it... so when he buys a bunch, I don't have to share. ;)

No idea if it's nature or nurture on this one. I also hate mushrooms with a passion. The rest of my family likes them, even loves them, but maybe I missed the genetic gene there.

I thought that most likes and dislikes have something to do with genetics, but now I don't know. I mostly take after my mom when it comes to likes and dislikes, but my kids hate everything that I like!

@Hate2Iron Nothin' better than a fresh, spinach salad with diced onions, garlic, tomatoes, eggs and some Ranch Dressing.

I'm not sure there are any vegetables that I hate. At different times of the year, I buy quite a large variety. And I love learning new ways to cook different vegetables, too. Gives them a whole different flavor. :)

Lol... unless you drown the in butter or brown sugar... there are very few cooked veggies that I like. I could live on salads though. But you have me curious!!

@Hate2Iron oh I never drown veggies in butter or brown sugar! my mother used to do that and my palate is completely different these days. Some taste better roasted. Some are better baked in casseroles. I had a great recipe for brussel sprouts since my husband wasn't sure he liked them. I sauteed them with bacon and apples and he just fell in love with them! So there are lots of ways to do vegetables if you keep searching for recipes. :)

There are two that I don't like.. malabar spinach (alugbati) and sponge gourd (patola). I don't like the taste and smell of these veggies.

@Hate2Iron I think you are familiar with luffa sponge. That's the sponge gourd. There are different varieties of that here in my country and we have dishes with the young sponge gourd.

I don't really care too much for squash or okra. I used to not like Brussel sprouts but when someone cooks it right, it is delicious.
