The show American Odyssey has made its way to our African screens and with the military conspiracy and political plotting we are n for a few good weeks of cloak and dagger episodes. Timbuktu features as a place where captives are taken, tortured and killed and on hearing the name I almost immediately remembered my dad always saying it's as far from here as Timbucktu. This meant a long, long way away to a place of desolation. He served in Egypt during WWII and Timbuktu was one of the basis. Quite horrifically this place has new mention in American movies. It lies on the south edge of the Sahara Desert a small historical place in Mali. It seems there is always a war going on somewhere, even when we think we are at peace. Timbuktu prays for liberation, while it etches its sand with the blood of innocent lives . . . So the story goes. Have you seen American Odyssey?

@sishy7 the word was always used in a phrase depicting a place Far away and very isolated - well after hearing my dad mention a few times of their manoeuvres in Egypt and Timbuktu during the war, I realised it was a real place. Then last night while watching the new series - Ta da Timbuktu is mentioned as the place where they are at. How strange is that - So girls - YES it is really a place @Jessicalynnt

Timbuktu seems a rather odd place to occupy because it is a trading centre where the nomadic tribes come to barter.

@Inlemay I do believe it was once occupied by the Foreign Legion during the French occupation of the whole North West region, but is a simple market town.

@Asylum not in the series American Odyssey. I suppose they had to have a realistic look for the show. I am glad it's just a market in real life.

No sorry I never had but we also think of Timbuktu as very far away at the edge of the civilized world.
