Greyhound Not so Great

Greyhound is a very popular bus company that travels almost to every place in the USA. I would say that their services are a bit over rated. I have used their buses before to go visit friends and family and they aren't the worst in the world but I am sure they aren't the greatest either. I bought two tickets to go to Tennessee and they had said the trip was going to be roughly 16 hours. They also tell you that sometimes the travel times are subject to change for what ever reasons,Bad weather traffic delays etc. I understand that these are things that are sometimes out of the control of people. However I should not have to suffer because of it. I had 3 bus transfers and a lay over of 2 hours at one place. The bus driver was in shift change and apparently someone was late. Which caused the lay over transfer be an extra hour longer than expected. Now I was far from happy but i didn't complain. When we finally got on and left an hour later than expected we finally get to the final transfer only to find out that the bus I was scheduled to take had already left. The next bus was not going to arrive until 4:45 am. I told the clerk to please get management because that was not acceptable. Her manager told her to give me two meal vouchers. I told her I appreciate what you are doing and this is not personal but I don't care about a meal voucher what I care about is that I paid for bus tickets and made plans and sleeping in a bus terminal was not one of those plans. She then goes on to say that I could stand in the priority area and wait to see if there was enough space so that we could get on the bus but if there was no space I would be stuck taking the 4:45am bus which she was nice enough to change my tickets to at no cost to me. So I use the meal vouchers get in the line and go out the the bus and the driver tells me that I am not on his bus I explain and he says well get on and if there is space if some people don't show I can ride his bus. Well people show up and he tells me I might have to get off the bus to make room for them because they were scheduled to ride the bus at that time. I was angry and tired and sore from traveling all day. So I snapped back and said so what you are saying is that even though your company charged me full fare price didn't show up on time made me late and lose my fair and I stood and waited in the priority line which was full of other people who had the same problem that they were more valued. He says no but you missed your bus and they are here on time. I said so was I. Then he says oh well you won't have to get off but you may have to have the child sit on your lap I said NO I paid for two tickets why should I pay for two tickets and only get one seat if that is the case I want a refund. The guy was rude to me the rest of the trip. We stopped to pick up and drop off people and he would let us out to smoke. We all stood by the bus so he wouldn't leave us by mistake. He comes to me and says you need to move and go smoke somewhere else the smoke is going into the bus. I moved and said nothing to avoid a problem. Then he yelled at me because the light on my screen was too bright and bothering him while driving. The person in front of me started to yell at me hey hey he's talking to you! Turn off the phone. Mind you the rules said nothing about phones off just on silent/vibrate. Nobody else got yelled at for their bright screens. I finally made it to my destination after 20 hours. When I get back home you better believe that I will be making a few phone calls and filing complaints and whatever else to make sure this doesn't happen again. It isn't the first time it has happened to me. Years ago I took a trip and the same thing happened and I had to sleep in the terminal for about 6 hours until the next bus and they wanted to charge me for a new ticket. Well Greyhound I am sorry to tell you but you suck and I will not only complain but I no longer will use your services. I will hit them where it hurts in the wallet. You won't be getting my money anymore and you surely won't ever hear me sending anyone your way instead I will do just the opposite. I feel a bit better now I am off to enjoy my vacation.

Going Greyhound is grueling. I went cross country from LA to NYC because the fare was a bargain $76 (this was decades ago) and I suffered for every penny saved. Can't sleep. Constant stops. Layovers in downtown bus stations where you don't dare go outside at 3 am. Stopping at lousy restaurants. Like a fool 10 year ago, I took Greyhound to Seattle thinking how bad could it be? Bad.

Yes they suck still lol not much has changed which makes me think I should complain but as you can see from what I wrote the person in the previous message I feel as if it is a little to late to complain because of the amount of time that has passed due to all the craziness.

Oh wow! I am so sorry this happened; did you ever complain to them about it? I've never used Greyhound but I haven't always heard great things. I used MegaBus once and it was fine, but it was only a 2hr trip.

by the time I got back I had to pack and move and by the time I got settled in here it was over a month I kind of felt that the appropriate time frame kind of passed and I left it alone I don't have any plans to ever use their service again and neither do any of my friends we are all pretty much boycotting them. Their loss.

@OKennedy I don't blame you for not using them again. I wouldn't either.

@tammys85 Its just easier to drive myself or bring another driver more fun that way anyway when you are accompanied by someone you know and like.

i was going to but when i got back i had gotten back home around 2ish and went to work around 9 and then was moving and started packing my computer was out on repair no internet or home phone due to the move and everything was chaotic and it took two weeks to get phone on and now i kind of feel complaining is a bit pointless. its been a month since it happened but had it not been so crazy yes i would have spent some time complaining.

Greyhound used to have a great record. I remember reading about them in novels and other places. What a shame this happened.

I think that they can be great again if they start having better contingency plans and stop making the customers feel as if its they're not important. I felt as if they felt like I had to deal with whatever they dished out as if I had no other choices. There are also trains and plains so they need to do something about it.

@OKennedy People won't put up with really bad service for too long. They'll find other alternatives.

@JudyEv Eventually people will because nobody wants to pay for something and then not get what was promised that they paid for you have a certain expectation.

Very inefficient service, and yet they were so rude, no excuses for their flaws! They will lose customers/passengers that way.

Wow, you had a lot of trouble, I haven't used Greyhound in years, but when I was a child we always traveled by bus. I don't recall anything like this happening to us.

I haven't used Greyhound in a lot of years but the 2 times I did use them I had no problems.

I wouldn't have been nice about it either. Riding in a bus under the best of circumstances is bad enough but to go through all that!

I have taken a greyhound before and I had a similar experience-it was AWFUL! I swore never again would I get on one and I haven't.

A friend of my traveled across the continent by bus to see the sights along the way. When he returned to gave a speech on it. At the time Greyhound had the motto "leave the driving to us". His advice to us was to save yourself the pain and take the plane.

It is a shame that the Greyhound Bus Company did treat you rudely on your travels to your destination.
