Wisdom from the Bible: Be careful who you listen to!

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit...according to the basic principles of the world... What a great reminder for this U. S. political season. Many of the grand pronouncements we hear from politicians and pundits are designed to feed our prejudices rather than engage our minds. We may not want to believe it, but many of the people who are saying the things we most like to hear are actually trying to manipulate us through "philosophy and empty deceit" rather than communicating objective truth. Don't believe everything you hear from your favorite politician!

I would debate the intelligence of believing anything they're saying on the campaign trail.

Even otherwise intelligent people are susceptible to propaganda that reinforces our preexisting beliefs. We all need to be careful!

Good advice for politics and religion. Of course, anymore people would prefer to believe and follow the lies rather than the truth. As they say, "the truth hurts," so maybe that's why the "preaching that tickles the ears" is so easily and widely embraced.

Even if a politician should be honest (is that possible?) about how his/her stand on things, they can't (not supposed to anyway) just go into office and change things to suit themselves. There are laws and congressional stops and balances that won't allow that.

I just yesterday read a 'joke of the week' at work. It went: Little girl: Daddy, do all fairy tales begin with, 'once upon a time '? Daddy: No, dear, many start with, ' If you elect me I'll......'.

Isn't a "religious politician" an oxymoron?

I tend to disbelieve every politician. They only say what they think the people want to hear.
