The truth behind chocolate chip cookies

Picture a delicious chocolate chip cookie....warm from the oven and bursting with flavorful chocolate chips. Now picture a chocolate cookie, a dark brown cookie without chocolate chips. That chocolate cookie is what Ruth Graves Wakefield attempted to make one day....here's the rest of the story. Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield bought a little inn aptly named 'Toll House Inn'....since she was a dietitian she came up with all the recipes for the meals her guests would eat. One day back in 1930 she was busy mixing up a bath of chocolate cookies when she realized she had no baker's chocolate. What to do, what to do? She figured if she used Nestles semi-sweet chocolate that it would melt and the chocolate would spread through out the dough and she would still have chocolate cookies. Wrong! The chunks of chocolate didn't melt and what she wound up with was her now famous Toll House Cookies. So the next time you bit into a warm chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven remember that you are eating Mrs. Wakefield's mistake! I've been told this story all my life by my mother and two of her older sisters, all of whom worked at the Toll House Restaurant in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Sadly, the Toll House Restaurant is no more.

@AbbyGreenhill I am. I learned how to make Toll House Cookies when I was twelve and have the recipe memorized. Both my sons learned how when they were about the same age. It's kind of an off-beat family tradition.

@AbbyGreenhill I think I was an adult when I realized that not ALL chocolate chip cookies had oats in them. My Mom put oats into everything it seemed like.
