Cargo Shorts: In Fashion or Out of Fashion?

I came across an interesting article yesterday while scrolling through the internet. It was an article about men's cargo shorts. The article stated that for the first time in over a decade, sales of cargo shorts finally declined last year. Is this a sign that America's love affair with cargo shorts has finally come to an end? Cargo shorts exploded onto the fashion scene and the hearts of American men in the late 90's, and seemed to continue to gain steam in the early 2000's. It's a fashion staple that has proven to be very resilient, and it's often unheard of for a particular style of clothing to remain in fashion for more than a decade, let alone two. But alas, the love affair may be over! It's too soon to tell if last year's sales figures were an anomaly, or if it's the start of a downward trend in sales of cargo shorts. Many popular retailers still stock cargo shorts and feature them heavily in their displays and promotions. But many high-end fashion retailers are starting to phase them out. What are your thoughts on cargo shorts? Do you think they are still stylish, or is it time to move on? If you're a man, do you still own and wear cargo shorts? And if cargo shorts are finally falling out of fashion, what is replacing them?

How do cargo shorts differ from any other type of shorts?

@moffittjc They sound useful as an alternative to carrying a suitcase.

@Asylum Very much so! I love them because they have big pockets on them that can hold quite a bit. At Disney World, security requires you to stand in a very long line and have the security officers search any purses or backpacks that you bring in. So, instead of carry a pack, I load everything in my pockets and avoid the security inspection lines!

They are a baggy type of shorts made out of a khaki material, and have lots of extra pockets, hence where the name 'cargo' came from

My hubby only wears regular shorts and in any solid color. My older son wears regular shorts, usually in plaids. My younger son wears cargo shorts when traveling to hot places for his stuff!

I know that plaid shorts came into fashion several years ago (and I even own a pair), but I have to admit I don't see too many guys wearing them these days. If I had to guess, I still think most guys are still wearing cargos. I'll just have to keep my eyes out and see what I can observe. Wait...I know! I will survey all my lifeguards at work. I have about 75 college guys and girls on staff, and I can poll them and see what they say is in fashion!

@moffittjc The one who has plaid shorts also wears solids, but no cargo. What do you expect from a NYC corporate attorney??? Lol!

@DianneN Although most cargo shorts are khaki, I have several pairs that are colors. Blue, gray and brown. It's funny, because when I where the colored cargos, they don't even look like cargos! lol

Really? Hubby still wears cargo shorts as they are all too convenient (especially with the pockets). I like them and I even have women versions of them. Shorts are shorts to me in men's fashion . . . as long as they are not short-shorts .

@moffittjc Cargo shorts are functional for sure! And guys do need those pockets (women have their purses - guys rely on their pockets!). So what kind of shorts are in now? I can't imagine that they would look that much different.

I agree with you! For men, shorts are shorts. There's not a whole lot of fashion that needs to go into men's shorts. We just need them to be functional! Having lots of extra pockets is highly functional to me!

@much2say That was the thing I found frustrating about the article I read...it didn't specify what is supposedly in style now!

My husband doesn't wear shorts of any kind if he didn't I wouldn't buy him that kind. They look very sloppy to me.

That is what the article mentioned, that they are falling out of favor with the ladies because they are baggy and sloppy looking.

@moffittjc If you are a hicker or something they are probably a good option.

@AbbyGreenhill Well, I am quite a 'hicker' (I assume you mean 'hiker'), so yes, cargo shorts are a great option for me! Hmmm....now that I think about it, is a 'hicker' a person who goes around giving girls hickies on their necks?

I haven't heard this. I'm not a man, of course. But I did buy some cargo pants this year. I love them. But I think Chris still wears his cargo shorts.

I plan to keep wearing cargo shorts for as long as they keep selling them! They're just too practical and functional to stop using just because someone says they're out of fashion!

Mike has a pair of dark green ones and he likes them. We found them on sale. He likes them. We should get him another pair. Not sure what would be a good replacement for them. Mike's not into the basketball type of shorts. Have a blessed day

I'm a big fan of cargo shorts because of all the extra pockets they have on them. If the new style of shorts that is replacing cargo pants doesn't have a lot of pockets, then I'm not interested in getting them. I need all those extra pockets that are on cargo shorts!

I'm like you Alfredo, I could care less about fashion! I enjoy cargo shorts because they are comfortable, and have lots of side pockets. I'm always in need of extra pockets for carrying things, and cargo shorts do the trick for me!
