"Why Haven't You Replied, Damn You!?"

Please forgive my language! I don't REALLY mean to call damnation down on anyone. It's just my exasperation at typing a beautiful, complete answer to a question and either not getting any reply or just a "Thank you for your response." Haven't you sometimes felt the same? After all, what we earn is based on how many people respond or comment on what we post, so we NEED those responses and comments to make it 'worth while'. Really, though, is it the other person's fault? Perhaps they posted before they went to bed or went off to do other things (most of us, surprising as it may seem, do have a life outside of MyLot!). Or maybe my answer was TOO complete and there really was nothing more that could be said or asked! How do you see "MyLotting"? Do you see it as a place just to post topics in the hope that others will comment or do you consciously think of starting and continuing conversations? I can't say that I always think about the way to encourage a whole string of comments back and forth, which is what a discussion and a conversation both thrive on, but this is really what makes a good MyLotter! Whaddya think, guys? How do you do it?

Some of your responses, especially to newbies, are so comprehensive that there can be nothing more for them to do but to thank you for it. However, I take your point. Conversations aren't always possible, but I personally reply to everyone who responds to my posts. If it develops into a 'back and forth', so much the better.

It is sometimes difficult, even impossible to have a discussion (and not at all clear that the OP expected one). My intention was to be rather more self-critical than otherwise, of course (and to encourage others to be the same).

@owlwings A little self-criticism is never a bad thing. We should do more of it.

@owlwings ... In some subjects, it is that you are at a higher plane. If the person is at ABC, you are at XYZ. So from your level, even if you come down to their levels, you reach PQR, and they are nowhere near. It can be relating to subject or English. Personally, I go a step further to understand your replies.

There seems to be a growing condemnation of those not commenting or responding to suit people and seemingly irritation that every comment/response isn't replied to. That is unduly placing pressure on people especially those with limited time. If we were to respond to every comment/response (and some threads can go long), we would be on myLot hours on end and no time to post. You answered the question posed. What more do you want? Many times there is nothing more of substance to add. On this site, political discussions can go endlessly around in pointless circles only serving to increase earnings. Does one approach this site first and foremost about earnings and posting what you think will start profitable discussions or are you here for pressure free fun and posting what you want whether it inspires reaction or not.

Ah, well, I knew that someone would nibble the bait about the 'earnings' mention! I completely agree with you, actually, that MyLot isn't (or shouldn't be) anything at all to do with earnings. It's all about teaching the art of conversation (and, sometimes, sensible discussion), really. In fact, to me the 'earnings' are no more than a sort of score in the game or exercise of sensible discussion. I have to admit that it's nice that they do, eventually, translate into things that I can buy (including this laptop on which I'm typing now) but that certainly isn't why I have been here for 10 years (and counting), though it MAY be why I choose to spend my time here rather than on Yahoo Answers or Quora! Yes, very often I answer the question completely (or at least as completely as I know how) and there is (or should be) very little more to say. That is the way with many questions, of course, and it is something we should sometimes expect of a site like this. It's worth rather more than that, however, don't you think? (Political and religious arguments aside, which I agree can go on in circles for ever and a day). The question is, how do we train ourselves to encourage discussion ... and to promote it to the members who haven't yet seen beyond that '$' sign up on the right?

@owlwings There is always going to be a segment here who are strictly earnings mercenaries and they will go away upon realizing vast sums aren't to be made here. They come and go. Those that stick around appreciate monetary reward (who doesn't want a few extra bucks) but are here mainly for entertainment, relieve boredom, to express themselves, engage, meet people from faraway places, even vent. I still believe posting is more important than response because posts are the engine driving the site and emphasis should be not be on trying to prod members into always answering comments/responses and continuing dialog but doing posts because the site thrives on good post quantity and variety.

I much prefer to become involved in a discussion, although it all depends on the topic.

@owlwings I found some of the locals in the Lleyn Peninsula to be very anti English I remember walking into a bakery shop to buy a pie and there was one more customer there. She had already been served and was talking to the shopkeeper in English. As soon as I entered they switched to Welsh. It would have been easier to just serve me and I would have left.

I do like the few conversations I've gotten into. But I don't have a lot of time to be here. And I do things like work, go away to visit family, and have family visit me. So, I can disappear just when someone starts a good discussion.

But, when you do come back to reply or comment on the responses you get, you usually have something worthwhile to say. Mind you, not all responses have anything about them which contribute much to 'forwarding' the conversation, do they! I find that the best discussions/conversations I've had are often ones which actually have nothing to do with the discussion topic! Is that just me or do others find that? (It happens in real life conversations, too, so it isn't just an online phenomena!)

@owlwings Oh I have found that as well. I have had to learn that a couple of people do Not appreciate an off topic discussion on "their" post in order not to annoy them. As you say, real life discussions meaner all over and that's when it gets fun here.

Welcome to MyLot! It's all about having discussions, meeting people, learning about other countries and cultures &c and, well, having fun. You will find that the fact that you might earn a little in the process is just a 'bonus', really. The money is nice, of course, but the best part is talking to people from all over the world ... here am I, from one of the flattest and most low-lying part of the world talking to you who lives just beneath the roof of the world!

@Suza11 You seem to have very good English. That is always a help, of course, on sites like this. Kathmandu and Nepal are better known than, perhaps, they should be because of the dreadful earthquakes you have had there which have shown us pictures of disaster and mayhem there. We are truly sorry that you have had such turmoil.

I don't want to give an honest answer. If the conversation was started by me, you will probably get a reply back. But most of the times there is just a 'like', equivalent to a silent nod/smile.

I often find that I run out of things to say after a while unless a response or comment goes off on a different tack, as sometimes happens. Then the discvussion can sometimes take on a life of its own!

Well, I don't used to get that many responses these day here on mylot. May be that time has changed lot and yes I am not much active too. But it is okay. It is still good site to interact on different topics with other members. So I am okay with the current condition.

I like to write about my world, but it doesn't always lead to a lot of replies! I do try to reply to others, which I enjoy, but don't always have a lot of time.

I guess at times it depends on what time of the day or week you are posting depending on the replies. I quite like getting into a discussion on posts. I like mylot but it is more of a hobby rather than relying on it as a source of income plus it is great to hear other members views and opinions too!

It does seem to matter a little who is around and active at the time. I also find that, as far as replying to responses goes, after a certain number I have mostly said all that there is to be said on the subject so unless someone comes in with a new topic (related or not), it becomes difficult to maintain the discussion beyond a certain point.

Well, I like posting discussions about simple topics that everyone can relate to. I also post a question either at the actual Title or at the end to encourage responses. I also try my best to respond or comment to the responses I receive during my free time. However, I do not hold a grudge if I do not receive any response. :)

Nor do I hold a grudge, actually. Everyone has their own reasons for responding or not, as the case may be. It's worth thinking about exactly how conversations work, though, don't you think?

I like to continue conversations on here but I know that is not always going to happen. I enjoy responding to others posts and get responses to my posts. I find it interesting as to how many responses I get on one topic and not so many on another. If one of my posts doesn't get the amount of responses I think it should I am disappointed for a bit but, then I just move on and try something else. I think I get pretty good response on most things I post. Everyone looks at things differently and not always as I think they will. I just move on and keep going.

When i make a post , i ask a question pertaining to my post , so my readers can give their insight or suggestion or advise as the case may be . In that case , there will be an exchange of replies .

sometimes I can, and sometimes I can't, part of the issue is the other person though, they have to throw out responses that require more than a yes or no answer. hehe

i've no answers, hon. i'm still shocked anybody takes the time to read, much less respond to my most oft mindless dribble. 'tis hard'n the eyes 'f many :) i do my best to read/respond where i feel need be to those who've taken the time to leave a response'n what i've written, 's well's continuin' conversations. sadly, like today, gremlins sometimes take o'er 'n i lose those notifications 'n such jest aint possible.

I don't have the time to respond to every single comment. Sometimes I forget to go back to a post to see if my comment has been responded to by the poster and then weeks later I'll feel guilty. I need more hours in the day!
