When I was a little kid, my dad took my brother and I on a "lion hunt" some weekends. I did not know it was because my mom needed a break and some peace and quiet. We were the ferocious lion hunters. We looked for spoor and tracks. We tested the wind direction to make sure we were downwind from any possible lion. We tramped through fields and woods, always aware that we might sight the beast at any moment. We never even saw one. My dad always said that if I saw one, I would run away scared. I did not believe him and I think I was thinking it was just a bigger cat. I will always remember our lion hunting days. What animal memories do you have? Did you ever "hunt" anything?

Come to think it was not you who would be running away from lion getting scared...it would be lion..your dad had it wrong...kidding...lol Snakes...a whole bunch of them...hatched out from eggs...the gardener took a basket and covered them..so that they would not escape...and sent me to neighbor's place and called a few others so they could kill them..that is one I remember...and I also remember elephant lifting me with the trunk and perching me on its back. When I think of that I feel like crying. Back then I did not know they ill-treated elephants to train them like that...

How cool that the elephant lifted you onto its back. I have never been close to an elephant. What kind of snakes were they?

We should try lion hunting. We know they're here. We kept it small growing up. We caught bugs and kept them in jars. Biggest thing we ever caught were frogs and toads.

My kids used to catch fireflies and put them in a bottle for a lamp. They also found toads, frogs, and snakes, creepy crawly things. I don't know what we would have done with a lion if we found one.

@akalinus Thankfully they are very elusive. Around here the government is really sure they are here but I have four reliable sightings in our area this summer. One of those sightings was from my wife.

Did you eat the mushrooms? I would be afraid of poisonous ones. We picked wildflowers, too. It is probably illegal now.

@akalinus We had a 20 acre farm when I was a kid. Some woods as well as open pasture and an apple orchard. Morels are easy to tell from other mushrooms. We'd fill a bread sack with them and take them home, soak them in salt water to kill bugs and then fry them in butter and eggs. Yum.

@akalinus in India hunting a lion down is crime. By the way how is your life going on now?

My grandfather took me out in a canoe when I was 9. He suggested we hunt for alligators amongst the marsh. I think there probably were gators in there. I never agreed to the mission.

@akalinus I am sure he knew I wouldn't go for it. We got out of the reeds pretty quickly.

Sounds like a lot of fun for a kid! We did have mountain lions not far from the house when I was a kid and we did not go hunting for them! I remember catching peepers in the hay meadow near the house and putting them in my aunt's bed. Uh... probably shouldn't have confessed that. It was fun to catch them, though. Other than that, we didn't hunt anything like that.

@akalinus Yes, peepers are those tiny frogs that you find in the grass.

Um, are peepers frogs? I think I hear them after it rains. It was fun and we really thought we were hunting for lions.

I lived in a big city, there was no possibility to go Lion hunting in the streets, but I loved to visit the local parks and to feed the ducks in the ponds.

LOL! Yes, my family often hunted the fields and forests when I was growing up. Uhm... we actually hunted to put meat on our table, though. Cottontail, jackrabbits, squirrel, turkey, quail and white tail deer were hunted on our farm in Missouri and several of my brothers brought back elk, moose and bear when they hunted in The Rockies and in Canada. Two of my older brothers still make a trip every year out West or Northwest to bring back different wild game for our freezers. We also took friends out to hunt "Snipe" on our farm, too! LOL! (I always thought it was funny that there really is a bird called a Snipe that is very tasty if prepared correctly!) But the "hunts" we took our friends on always ended up by us leaving the person in the woods for a while by themselves while everyone else covertly headed home for a mug of hot cocoa to fortify us for the "search and rescue" we had to do to bring the friend back to the house!

That sounds like fun, for you at least. There were times when my dad hunted for illegal "beef" and funny looking chicken. Oh, deer! But, you do what you need to do. Anyway, it was a long time ago and not everyone hunted in season or got a license. I'm not sure he even needed one.
