How long is it since you stood up and took a walk?

looking after your legs.

I spend less time on MyLot these days since a visit to the doctor with swollen ankles and a nasty varicose vein resulted in his diagnosis that I have bad circulation. So now I set an alarm and get up and walk around when I sit down for too long. Most of the things I enjoy doing are done sitting down. Reading, making jewellery, writing and Skype-ing, even watching television or going to the cinema. For years I worked in an office and sat down all day but I did get some exercise racing to catch the train! Now I am retired I could quite easily sit for hours doing any of the above and not even notice the passing of time. So for me now My Lotting has to be little but (hopefully) often.

I have read that we should never sit more than a half-hour at a time without getting up and moving around.

I have a timer next to the computer and in theory that should work. In practice it seems to interrupt me at just the wrong moment and then I ignore it.!

I'm sorry that you have problems. I sit for far too long, glad you've reminded me.

41combedale, I am like that too I can't for hour because of bad varicose veins. I am wearing support hose since a good 20 years now and if I don't go for walks or do some cycling my legs hurt some, so lets stay active. You take care, well care of yourself.

How comforting to read your comments, I have been told now that I need an operation, confirmed this week by a second doctor. I' m not going for it just yet, it is an expensive operation, but I will exercise meantime.

It was a little over a week ago when I took a rather long walk. I need to do it more.

I wish I could say the same. Walking around the supermarket doesn't count does it?

You can still move your ankles when sitting at the desk, it does help for circulating the blood.

I do move my ankles at various times but I think I need to stand up and move my legs to really be effective.

@41combedaleroad It's always good to get up and walk a bit when you've been sitting at the computer or reading. I think Church too should have a break to let us stretch!

Perhaps a 'Happy clappy' church would give you a stretch if not a break....

I used to sit more and exercise less when I was working in office too, though I also needed to walk to catch the train. After becoming a stay at home mom, I walk more often. I bring my children to the park every evening, or sometimes even in the morning. I have to "entertain" my children, hence I can't sit in front of my computer for too long. Even though I have my computer turned on, after reading or writing for awhile, I will need to go and do some housework then only come back to my computer. So, I actually become healthier than before. Yes, I think you can also mylot for say 10-15 minutes, then go for a short walk or do something else, then come back again.

I need to start walking and my walker should not interfere. I spend an awful lot of time here on mylot as I am retired but I too have poor circulation and take a diuretic each day.I'm supposed to walk' for half an hour each day

Half an hour a day sounds very reasonable, the problem is where to do the walking. Where I live it is all hills so that puts me off. I have to drive to find a safe place to walk. I hope the same does not apply to you Patsie.

It is amazing what we can do while setting though. I do a lot of arm and even leg exercises. If I don't my hip will fall asleep.

@41CombedaleRoad ....You sound in pretty good shape. I am way our of shape and in the winter mostly my one hips hurts horribly.

thankfully both my hips are decades younger than I am - so they do not fall asleep. I should do some leg exercise but my arms seem strong enough.

I never sit for too long. I get up and do something around the house. The fact to have a house on two floors helps. I go up and down so many times every day.

I do go up and down the stairs a great deal, it might be good for my circulation but it is not good for my knees! However there is no way of avoiding them. I do my own housework now so that does give me some extra movement and flexib ility.

The problem is that I just don't notice the time passing, I expect the same is true for you when you are quilting as it is for me when I am making jewellery.

Firstly I'm sorry you have these conditions. That will involve a few lifestyle changes I guess. Does it count as 'not sitting' if you use a computer while standing up? I was just wondering. :)

Probably standing up is not quite so bad but it isn't going to get the circulation moving unless the body moves too I am afraid.

@41CombedaleRoad You need a tray round your neck like girls used to use to carry around lollies in the US cinemas. Then you could myLot on the 'walk'.

I usually walk a lot but since it's been so hot I've slacked. Soon I hope to be back on schedule. But I do sit too long at the computer. A bad habit.

The heat has caused me to slack off too, I used to walk around a track at the sports centre but it was outdoors and the heat has been too much. Hopefully we will soon be inspired to make that extra effort.

I am walking constantly at work because I work at a grocery store so I am always on my feet, ready to help a customer. I don't want to even quit my job ever, even though I want to do art as a career, because I know that I will not be as active as I am today because of my part time job.

I can be quite lazy. I used to go for regular walks but that was when I had time and someone to enjoy the walks with. Now, I still enjoy walking but often seem to be racing about and not having time to just walk! I did go for a walk yesterday, though. Mini and I walked to his Cub Scout group. We'd usually drive but he wanted to go for a walk, so that's what we did. It takes between 30 and 45 minutes. I think we'll be doing more walking now as Mini seems to be more inclined to do it. He's struggled before with aches but he seems to be better now. Also, now that the weather is improving, I'll probably try to go for an evening walk occasionally too.

I have read that sitting down too long does a lot of harm to our health. It is prone to produce thrombus that may cause stroke and myocardial infarction. Now I do some exercise after playing the computer for an hour.

I have started taking a break and doing circles in my living room during the day. I sit for a lot of the day doing school with the kids. But am finding to stand for a bit, doing donut all helps me out

It is easy to get involved in writing something, either on Mylot or another site and lose track of time. Hours pass in a twinkling. I need to get back to walking, my clothes are feeling tight.

I don't drive so I do a lot of walking - including rushing to catch trains.
