A problem solved

First problem of the month taken care of. Dealer was more helpful that I had expected. Part way through the week, for no apparent reason the van horn started blaring and the lights started flashing in the driveway with no one near our family minivan. Tried working all the locks manually to try and reset the system. A few minutes later it went off again. Tried everything we could think of and shortly after the "fix" it would go off again. I yanked the horn module out of the fuse box in frustration. You think some idiot blowing their horn in a traffic jam is annoying. Try sticking your head under the hood when it's going off. Temporarily we ended up pulling the battery cable to stop the problem. My wife dropped by the GM dealer to see if they had any ideas that wouldn't break the bank. They disabled the hood sensor and now the problem is gone. No charge just we have to put up with an electronic message on the dash saying the hood is ajar. I can live with that.

I'm glad they knew what to do! A simple fix and no charge either, you can't beat that.

@koopharper Oh, no... I'm sorry that didn't do it. I hope you figured it out. These things can be frustrating at times!

the story continues here.. As he walked across the yard happy his means of transportation was fixed the machine started blaring at him. It was secret plot, a manufacturing design flaw they said. It was not. It was ...

Turns out it isn't as solved as we thought. I may have figured it out but time will tell.

Well it worked for two days anyway. Tonight it went off again. Back to square one.

@paigea We'll be pulling the wire off the battery until they can have another look at it and/or we have the cash to fix it right.

One sensor can make your neighbours growl. That would have drove me crazy.

@koopharper So the guys at the dealership didn't solve it with the hood sensor I presume then? It would be so nice to disable just the alarm system and nothing more as a temp fix.

Unfortunately it turns out the problem isn't entirely solved. Fortunately there are no neighbours close enough to be bothered.

@Bluedoll The bad news is you can't disable the anti-theft system. Otherwise that would definitely be my choice. It is very unlikely to get stolen.

So the horn works normally now? Glad it didn't cost too much to fix.

The potential cost had me very concerned. I was ready to take the battery wire off every time I parked it until we had the money.

Seems to have been the key fob from our old van. With that gone so is the problem. It was definitely a pain.

We had that happen once or twice in the middle of the night. It is unnerving as we're a reasonable distance from any decent roads and/or neighbours.

Fortunately it started going off early in the evening. Where we live any amount of noise is unusual. It was frustrating not being able to figure out how to just turn it off without disabling the vehicle.

Oh man, that had to hurt the eardrums putting your head in there. OUCH I'm glad the dealer was able to help you - that had to be so annoying!

It was a horrible nightmare. Looking on line to see if I could solve the problem on my own. The discussions online were a litany of frustration. The cost estimates of having it professionally repaired weren't encouraging either.
