Dismiss Early From School Due To Heat

United States
September 28, 2016 1:54am CST
Back when I attended Elementary/Middle/High School - we were never dismissed early for any reason. For College - we would be dismissed if the teacher/professor was a no show within thirty minutes. Due to the heat some schools let the children be dismissed from school earlier than scheduled. I remember having classes in the bungalows with no air conditioning and two fans blowing at the classroom. It was so hot, you would find me sweating especially since I would be in the bungalows toward the end of the day where it is scratching hot. We were never sent home for any reason. Not even after a lock down let alone have weekly half days! But it is good to know, they are caring for the kids well-beings now! Before it was all about you must go to school bright and early. Now they adjusted the time a little later so everyone gets a good night sleep in too! However, if both parents work or parent (whichever the case may be) - being dismissed at any time could be hard if no one is available to pick up the child(ren).

We get a kick out of schools here....if they say we might get a dusting of snow on Thursday, they close school on Wednesday. They say it's for the bus drivers' safety - but I beg to differ. We have a school bus driver on the next road over and she has to come down our road to get to the school and she drives about 60 mph on our country road, she really needs to be reported...maybe I'll do that today - LOL

We were never dismissed from school due to heat. There was no air conditioning when I was young and some days it was really very, very hot.

@LadyDuck Here they sue for almost everything. There was one on the news last month.... from what I read in the parking lot of a Target , the woman stabbed herself with a medical needle. She sued Target for billions of dollars. Why did she have to touch the medical needle? She didn't test positive for anything. Regardless she won her case.

Here such the considerate rules are available. Such as if there is a typhoon coming, then the teachers will notify the parents not to let the children go to school next day. But sometimes it is also difficult when you can not find someone else to take care of your child next day when you have to work.

No typhoons here, we need rain/storms as we're in a drought. I do not have kids, but like you mentioned it could be hard for childcare if the child gets to be dismissed unexpectedly.

This is the first time I've heard classes were dismissed early due to hot weather. Classes dismissed early due to bad weather and bad weather = storm/typhoon, extremely heavy rains. But never heat.

@infatuatedbby Nope. Only expensive private schools have AC. But public schools don't have AC at all.

We never had bad weather as far as rain or storms, we need more rain! It's the first I have ever heard of being dismissed to heat too! Are all classrooms in the Philippines equipped with a/c as it gets hot there?

No snow here! But no heat days for me either. I didn't have half day weekly either! Just once a month!

I remember when I was going to school before 7th grade having 1 to 2 snow days a year. We had to make them up on Saturdays. That was back in the 70's, no early dismissal for heat though and school didn't have air condition either. It was a tougher generation than today I believe. We never had a lock down either, just fire drills.

@infatuatedbby, I know even in our small town a number of schools have been in lock down the past couple of years. It's sad times that we live in.

We always had AC and heat in our schools when I went. Kids can't focus when their pouring sweat I don't think anyway. We got sent home early for snow since at that time I lived in a very cold state.

That is awesome your school had a/c and heater. Mine didn't and it was hot after lunch and especially when I had PE 5th period and by the time I went to 6th period I was sweating! You're right - kids don't function so well during heat.

We were let out early one year for snow. But never for heat. I think one year we didn't have school because of the heat.

Years ago I can remember being dismissed early from school when it was way to hot to stand it. I was living in Miami at that time and there was no air conditioning in the school.

There was a couple of times when I was in school that we were dismissed early due to excess heat. The schools I went to didn't have air conditioning, except for the science lab and auditorium.

It would be hot for kids to learn well in a hot environment and it will make them sick as well. This is the reason why I did not mind spending more for my son's education just so he would study in an air-conditioned classrooms.

You have to pay for school in the Philippines? Or private school? I went to a public school, some classrooms are air-conditioned while some aren't.

Isn't it funny how "that's the way it was" for us - and hey, we're still here! But kids today do have it a bit easier - yet they still complain - they don't know how good they have it!
